Music education in early school years is an effective way to encourage young children to appreciate music. It can also be a foundation for a future in music for some of those children. Many fifth-grade teachers begin music education with activities and instruction meant to inspire and challenge children to enjoy music as well as to learn the fundamentals.

Vocal Warm-Ups

Arrange students in a circle and have them take turns practicing vocal warm-ups. Follow the vocal exercises by allowing children to take turns singing a favorite song. This not only helps children to sing more effectively, it encourages them to sing for fun and pleasure. Allowing children to choose the songs they want to sing is an ideal way to allow them to express themselves through song.

Music History

Teaching the history of music is an important part of music education. Teaching the history of music to a group of fifth-graders can be challenging. The challenge is to not only interest them in the subject, but to engage them. Consider using skits and plays to teach the life of Mozart or the history of rock music. Allow children to play roles and be a part of telling the story rather than simply reading out of a book. Let the children perform their plays and skits for the rest of the school. This can be a great way to teach music history and allow children to express themselves creatively.

Music Art

Teach the basics of music notation and reinforce recognition of the elements of music notation by allowing children to draw music notes and symbols in an artistic setting. While they are creating art work, they will be practicing the formation of the elements that make up sheet music.

Switch Musical Instruments

Allow students to switch music instruments. The tuba player can attempt to play guitar, the drummer can attempt to to play a flute, and the violin player can attempt to play bass. This is an effective way for students to appreciate the skills needed to play instruments other than their own.

Music Games

Set aside a day to play classic games like Hangman and Scrabble with a musical twist, or music trivia-based board games and board games with an educational music approach. The games can seem like a break to students, giving them a fresher outlook and opening their minds to learning while they have fun doing it.

Fhe Activities For Singles

Family Home Evening is very important for LDS followers.

Family Home Evening (FHE) is a part of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saint's ideology. The concept encourages righteous living and strengthening of faith through family activities. In 1970, then President Joseph Fitzgerald Smith mandated Monday nights as FHE night. The structure of these evenings is intended to be informal and anyone can participate in FHE regardless of family size. To facilitate the practice of FHE and to emphasize its importance, church sanctuaries are closed on Mondays.

Make a Humanitarian Project

Church members are charged to give of themselves time, money and resources. Tangible personal property refers to personal items that are assets. These items can include jewelry, books and software. Singles can get together in a group and create a craft, like figurines or quilts, to be used as personal property, or this could be a singular activity.

Singing Hymns

FHE time is a time of togetherness, and singing hymns is an activity that reflects that. Songs that reflect praise and honor to God for his blessings are sung and help bolster close bonds. Singing hymns can occur anywhere; it can be in someone's house or at a local park. At universities across the nation, single students get together on campus to sing hymns.

Role Playing

Role-playing of Christian responses to practical situations can be a big part of FHE. Singles face a lot of challenges maintaining faith and skits that reinforce Christian values can serve as a platform for discussion and a vehicle for learning. Like a lot of FHE activities, role-playing can be done anywhere, but preferably in the home or a setting that will foster discussion to make the most of the activity. Examples of different sketches that can be performed include scenes from the Bible or the proper way to handle situations like a date.

Community Service

Visiting a hospital or a soup kitchen is part of the missionary tenet of faith that can be exercised by singles for FHE. Though the name FHE implies the home, the point is to strengthen and emphasize the Gospel, and outreach activities like hospice visits accomplish that goal.

Read the Gospel

Singles can take turns reading the Gospel to one another in a group. This is a basic activity of growing knowledge in Christ. Reading helps retain knowledge of the Gospel and provides a forum for self-examination, as well as allowing for growing intimacy with other singles. There are singles networks that allow singles to meet, like online forums or Facebook. Congregational members can also take the lead on facilitation of these kinds of events.

Board Games

Board games are a fun activity that can promote togetherness. A single person can invite other singles into their home for an evening of Monopoly, Scrabble or Taboo. A local community center can also be utilized for a game night.

Sports

Sports build a sense of camaraderie though competition. Sports like volleyball and softball are a great way to meet people and really have fun. If there aren't a lot of participants, singles can engage in tennis, basketball or any other activity that doesn't require a lot of people.

Material

Famous Food Of Hawaii

Hawaii has a number of traditional foods.

With such a wide range of influences, Hawaiian cuisine is very diverse. It includes a lot of fish dishes, due to the island's relationship to the sea, and highlights ingredients and methods borrowed from Western visitors, and Asian and Polynesian neighbors. Poi

Poi is a thick soup made from mashing cooked taro, or kalo in Hawaiian, a plant with a long, important history on the islands. Water is added during the process to give poi the desired consistency (it should ideally have a paste-like texture). Poi is a cuisine staple for native Hawaiians, who through varying "creation stories," believe that the taro plant, like the islands themselves, was among the founding ancestors of the Hawaiian people, says Hawaii Food Tours.

Lomi Salmon

Lomi salmon is commonly served as an accompaniment to poi, and both dishes are regularly found at Hawaiian luaus, or feasts. The dish is made from mixing salted salmon with crushed ice, tomatoes and scallions (green onions). The word lomi in Hawaiian means to massage -- the dish is prepared by gently mixing the ingredients together in a massaging motion.

Poke

Poke is essentially a raw fish salad, made most commonly with yellowfin tuna. The other ingredients are sesame oil, seaweed, soy sauce, onion and chili peppers. As some of the other constituent ingredients suggest, it is heavily influenced by Asian, particularly Japanese, cuisine. The fish is skinned, deboned and filleted, before being cubed and mixed with the other ingredients.

Kalua Pork

Kalua pork is a method of cooking a pig in an underground oven. The pig is roasted in the pit and covered with banana leaves to retain heat. The dish is traditionally the centrepiece of a Hawaiian luau. Once cooked, the pork is shredded and served with Hawaiian salt, a seasoning that mixes sea salt with Alaea, or volcanic red clay. The meat is tender, and the salt adds extra flavor.

Macadamia Nuts

Macadamia nuts are the third most planted crop in Hawaii, behind sugar and pineapples. The Hawaiian Kau variety has become very popular, as the plants are perfectly suited to the local climate. Macadamia nuts were first introduced to Hawaii in 1882, and they were so popular and successful that by 1918, according to The Nut Factory, there were 18,000 nut seedlings planted.

Pineapples

Hawaii is renowned for its pineapples. It is believed they were first introduced to the islands in 1813, but large scale production didn't begin until 1850, when James Dole set up a plantation on the island of Hawaii. Dole and his company would go on to have a lasting role in the history of Hawaiian pineapples. Hawaiian pineapples are best known for being added to pizzas and burgers.

Kona Coffee

Kona coffee is grown on the slopes of the Hualalai and Mauna Loa mountains, in what is known as the Kona coffee belt. This is the only region where Kona coffee may be grown, as nowhere else can replicate the unique conditions found there; the soil is rich, volcanic and full of minerals, and the shifting cloud patterns over the mountains provide the perfect amount of cover.

Famous Foods Of Hawaii

Hawaii is made up of eight large islands and many smaller islands.

Polynesians are believed to be the first culture to inhabit the big island of Hawaii some 1,500 years ago. In 1898, Hawaii became a territory of the United States, and in 1959, it became the 50th state. Hawaii has welcomed large populations of Japanese, Filipino, Chinese and Portuguese immigrants. The Hawaiian culture has been inspired by all of these diverse populations. This influence is evident in the dress and customs of the region, and especially in its famous foods. Poke

Poke is a local Hawaiian food that is made from raw seafood including ahi tuna, lobster or octopus. Poke means "cut piece." The seafood is sliced into bite-sized pieces then combined with other ingredients including seaweed, vegetables, fruits, herbs and nuts. Poke is often served as an appetizer, snack or side dish. Poke was originated by Hawaiian fisherman who would cut their daily catch into small pieces then season them to eat.

Spam

While not native to Hawaii, Spam has been quite popular among Hawaiian residents since World War II. According to Foders, 5 million cans of Spam are sold in Hawaii every year. The processed meat is prepared in a variety of ways including in salads and sandwiches, topped with pineapple and mixed in stir fries. One of the Hawaii's most popular creations, musubi, is a dish made of fried Spam, topped with rice and wrapped in seaweed.

Saimin

Saimin is an Asian-inspired soup with noodles that Hawaiians consider to be a comfort food. It is so widespread that it is available in many fast food restaurants on the islands. Saimin is made with wheat egg noodles that crinkle, making it similar to Japenese ramen or Chinese mein. The other ingredients include a broth made of chicken or fish, a protein like pork, Spam or fish cakes, green onions, soy sauce and chili pepper water.

Poi

Poi is a well-known Hawaiian dish with its origins in Polynesian culture. Often served at luaus, poi is made from taro root, a highly starchy plant like a potato. The taro is boiled, baked or steamed, then mashed until it becomes liquid. Water is added during the mashing and then again right before the poi is eaten. The resulting grayish-purple dish can be served in its liquid state or made thicker, almost doughlike. Poi is traditionally eaten with the fingers, but it can also be used as a garnish.

Laulau

Originally, the Hawaiian laulau was made by wrapping small amounts of pork and fish in lau or taro leaves. The ends of the leaves were then folded and the dish was wrapped again in ti leaves. The laulau was put in an underground oven with hot rocks placed on top and covered with banana leaves. Additional dirt was added to the laulau until it was buried. Modern laulau is often served during lunch along with rice and macaroni salad. It consists of salted butterfish and either chicken, beef or pork wrapped in taro leaves, then steamed on the stove.

Malasadas

The Portuguese brought malasadas to Hawaii. The deep-fried doughnuts are served hot and coated in sugar. In Hawaii, malasadas are served year-round, but they are especially popular before Lent. Locals even refer to Fat Tuesday as "Malasada Day." In preparation for Lent, local stores and bakeries use up their butter and sugar to make large amounts of the doughnuts. Some variations of malasadas include cream filling and cinnamon.

These free web hosts have tools that make it easy to upload photos and other media. Scan and upload old family photos to create a family photo album online. Include photos from past family reunions as well. Be sure there is an e-mail address for family members to RSVP.

Create a Slideshow CD

With all the graphic slideshow software available today, creating a slideshow and putting it on a disc to send to family members is easy and fun. Some of these programs are even free (see resources). The slideshow can include an array of photos from your family's past as well as an animated invitation to the event.

Create a Invitation

Desktop publishing software makes it easy to design cards of all types. Instead of the standard invitation, consider creating a home-movie themed invitation. Make movie tickets inviting family members to the premier of a movie about your family's history. Promise popcorn and soda during the movie, followed by an after-movie celebration (the family reunion). Simple word processing or desktop publishing software is suitable for creating the tickets. Making the "movie" can be done easily with software such as Microsoft Powerpoint, which allows you to create multimedia slideshows, or a free slideshow maker (see resources).

Easter Party Ideas For Toddlers

Have toddlers make yellow chicks.

Painting Chicks

Fill a small bowl with washable yellow paint. Give the toddlers each a pile of cotton balls, and have them dip the balls in the paint. Let them dry. Give the toddler self-adhesive googly eyes to attach to the dried cotton balls. Dip orange triangles in craft glue, and have kids attach them as the mouths. Put shredded plastic grass in a clean egg carton. Put each chick into a separate section of the egg carton.

Making Easter Baskets

Draw a line around the diameter of a 2-liter bottle about 4 inches from the bottom. Cut around the line, and discard the top portion. Use a hole punch to put a hole on either side of the bottle near the cut-off top. Cut up small pieces of colored tissue paper. Have the toddlers dip the pieces in white craft glue and apply them to bottle. Thread extra long pipe cleaners through the holes in the bottle to create a handle.

Play Easter Basketball

Put a large Easter basket on a table. Fill plastic Easter eggs with unpopped popcorn kernels. Use hot glue to seal them up. Give each child a handful of eggs to try to throw in the basket. As the toddlers get better, have them stand further and further back from the basket. Play until everyone has gotten all the eggs in the basket.

Blow the Chick Down

Use the cotton balls dipped in yellow paint, and line them up in the center of a table. Have the kids sit on either side of the table and try to blow their chicks to the other side. They cannot touch the chicks with the hands or arms. They can only blow them to get them to move. They win when the chick falls off the table.

The Waimea Canyon on the Hawaiian island of Kauai is known as the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific."

Six of the islands that comprise the archipelago state of Hawaii are open to visitors. All of the islands are known primarily for their beaches and other natural splendors, though each one provides a unique assortment of family-friendly attractions that range from exhilarating encounters with wildlife to scenic excursions and prominent historical sites.

Kauai

Kauai boasts one of the most awe-inspiring geological formations in the state -- the Waimea Canyon. Maui Ocean Center

Approximately 400,000 people visit the attraction annually.

The Maui Ocean Center covers five acres of ground. Kids can enjoy the Touch and Feel area, which allows them to reach into pools to pet a variety of creatures. The entire aquarium requires approximately one and one-half to two hours to completely tour.

The Maui Ocean Center is open seven days per week throughout the year. The aquarium remains open on all major holidays. General admission was $25.50 in October 2010. Children, senior citizens, Hawaii state residents and active U.S. servicemembers receive discounted admission. Free parking is available on-site.

Baby Beach

Baby Beach is located near Mile Marker Number Five on Highway 36 on the North Shore of Maui near Paia. The area is a protected beach that has calmer waters than on other parts of the island, making the water safer for small children to swim and play. Baby Beach is also relatively level and a destination for jogging and dog walking.

Baby Beach is open year-round. The beach is a public area and has no admission or access fees. The area does not have lifeguards on duty, nor does it offer facilities like restrooms. Free parking is available.

Maui Tropical Plantation

The Maui Tropical Plantation is on the Honoapiilani Higway in the town of Wailuku in western Maui. The facility is a 60-acre working fruit farm that opens its grounds to the public. The plantation held "Zagat" ratings of "very good to excellent" for its appeal, facilities and service in October 2010.

Families can participate in guided tours of the Maui Tropical Plantation, which include a tram ride throughout the grounds. Kids can see how fruits grow and become harvested and watch a coconut husking demonstration along the way. The tour typically features tastes of fruit as well.

The Maui Tropical Plantation is open daily. Tours depart eight times per day. Admission to the grounds is free though tours require the purchase of a ticket. Prices were $14 for adults and $5 for children as of October 2010. Free parking is available at the plantation.

Fall Fair Games For Kids

A fall fair is a celebration usually held in September or October. Parent-teacher organizations at schools sometimes have fall festivals to raise money for educational programs, after school activities or sport clubs. Some Christian churches may hold a fall fair instead of a Halloween party. Often held outdoors, these events include a variety of games and crafts centered on a harvest theme.

Corn Shucking Relay

Use Indian corn for a colorful relay game.

To play this game you will need two pair of farmer-type overalls, two pair of work gloves, two straw hats, two pails and unhusked, dried ears of corn for each player.

Put the pails at the end of the playing area or at least 50 to 100 feet from the starting line. Make a pile of corn next to each pail.

Divide the children into two teams and ask them to stand in lines. Place the farmer's clothing at the beginning of each line.

The first person on each team must dress up like a farmer by putting on the overalls, work gloves and straw hat. He then runs to the pail at the end of the playing area, picks up an ear of corn and tries to remove the husk and all the kernels as quickly as possible. As soon as his corncob is shucked he can run back to his team and take off the farmer's clothing.

The next person in line then dresses like the farmer, runs to the pail and shucks one corncob. Play continues until all team members have shucked one ear of corn. The team that finishes its pile of corn first wins the relay.

Pumpkin Decorating Contest

Set out a variety of craft supplies including markers, glitter glue, adhesive-backed craft foam, chenille stems, feathers, googly eyes and scraps of fabric. Give each child a miniature pumpkin and some glue. Tell the children they have 10 minutes to decorate their pumpkins using any of the materials on the table. When the time is up, award small prizes for craziest, happiest and scariest looking pumpkins. Everyone keeps her decorated pumpkins.

Guess How Many

Harvest mix candy also works for the Guess-How-Many game.

Fill a clear glass pumpkin-shaped jar with candy corn, counting each piece as you put it in. Set out the jar and let fair-goers try to guess how many pieces are in it. The person who guesses the number closest to the actual quantity wins the pumpkin jar and its contents.

Needle in the Haystack

To create this game you will need two bales of hay or straw and six large plastic needles in various colors. Use plastic needles with dull ends, like those found in children's cross-stitch kits.

Assign a specific prize to each needle color. Fall-themed prizes could include small bags of candy corn, scarecrow dolls, leaf sticker sets, orange silicone bracelets and simple craft kits.

Open the bales of hay or straw and fluff them up to create a large pile. Hide the plastic needles in a various places inside the pile. One child plays the game at a time. He has four minutes to find a needle in the haystack and win its associated prize.

Autumn Bingo

Give this traditional game an autumn twist by using bingo cards printed with pictures of harvest items like pumpkins, scarecrows and apple baskets. Native to West Africa, the oil palm was used for its production of oil for cooking. The English would trade and buy palm oil for its many uses. After 1900, plantations run by Europeans were established in Africa and Asia, and world trade continued to grow.

Nutrition

Palm oil is made of 50 percent oleic acid and 50 percent palmitic acid. These fatty acids are the most widely used by the human body for its normal functions. In moderation, it is a good replacement to trans fats and can result in a good HDL and LDL cholesterol ratio.

Uses

Aside from being edible, palm oil can be used in the creation of soaps. It is also used as an alternative fuel source, otherwise known as biodiesel.

Production

Indonesia and Malaysia are the leading producers of palm oil. The two countries produce anywhere from 16 to 18 million tons of oil a year.

Warning

Palm oil production comes with an environmental cost because so many people use it and demand continues to grow. The rise in palm oil production in Indonesia has destroyed parts of the tropical rain forests, which endangers the habitat of many endangered species.

Pearl Harbor is well known because of the surprise Japanese attack during World War II that brought the United States into the war. But Pearl Harbor, on the island of Oahu, had a rich history long before that infamous day in December. Teach kids facts about Pearl Harbor's history, legends and current use as well as the attack.

Beginnings

Pearl Harbor was called both Wai Momi and Pu'uloa by early Hawaiians. Wai Momi means "pearl water," and Pu'uloa means "long hill." Legends said that Pearl Harbor was where the shark goddess, Ka'ahupahau, lived.

U.S. in Pearl Harbor

The United States had noticed that Hawaii -- and Pearl Harbor, in particular -- was a good place to have a naval base in the Pacific Ocean. The kingdom of Hawaii and the United States ratified a Reciprocity Treaty in 1887 and allowed the United States Navy to use the harbor as a base.

Naval Stations

The Navy first docked at a harbor at Honolulu and referred to it as Naval Station, Honolulu, then Naval Station, Hawaii. It wasn't until 1908 that the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard was officially founded. Over the next 11 years, the United States Navy continued to work on expanding and improving the harbor.

December 7th, 1941

President Franklin Delano Roosevelt called this day "a date which will live in infamy" because of the attack. On this date, Japanese forces attacked the Pearl Harbor naval base with no warning. The United States had been reluctant to join the Allies in World War II, but this attack showed the U.S. that isolation was not an option.

Aftermath of the Attack

The attack on Pearl Harbor killed 2,402 U.S. Navy personnel and wounded 1,282. Fifteen ships and 188 aircraft were also destroyed, dealing a major blow to U.S. Naval Forces at Pearl Harbor. Many soldiers were trapped in ships and drowned in the harbor before they could be rescued while others were killed instantly in the attack. The United States declared war on Japan because of the attack on December 7, 1941. As a response, Germany and Italy declared war on the United States since they were allies with Japan.

Pearl Harbor Today

The Pearl Harbor Navy base is still an active navy base today. The base is home to much of the U.S. Navy's Pacific fleet. Although there is a memorial at the harbor, visitors are only allowed in certain areas as the rest are only available to military access.

1. Use a times table to help with basic multiplication. A times table contains a set of numbers (typically 1 through 12 or more) horizontally across the top of the table and vertically across the side of the table. By selecting the two numbers you want to multiply from the table (if you want to multiply 12 and 12, for example), you can follow the two sets of numbers to the point at the table where the columns and rows meet to find the answer to your multiplication problem.

2. Learn what the quotient is. In division, the quotient is the product of the two numbers you are dividing. For example, if you're dividing the number 10 by the number 10, the quotient would be "1" because 10 / 10 = 1. In this scenario, the first number "10" would be the dividend and the second number "10" would be the divisor. You divide the dividend by the divisor to find the quotient.

3. Practice converting a multiplication problem into an addition problem. For example, the multiplication equation "10 x 5" is equal to the addition equation "10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10." Performing both of these equations will result in the same answer of "50." If you're having a hard time with multiplication but have a deep understanding of addition, convert one type of problem into the other.

4. Get comfortable with the concept of the "remainder" in division. The remainder is present in division when the quotient of a problem is not a whole number. For example, dividing "10" by "3" does not result in a whole number. Instead, it results in the number "3" and then a remainder. The remainder on a calculator is expressed in the form of a decimal point.

Description

Hosting a party can be stressful. The host is responsible for finding the venue; creating and putting up all the decorations; supplying food; and even inventing games. Bridal showers, baby showers and showers of all types bring lots of people together to celebrate one big event. Bridal Shower

Bridal showers are particularly tricky when it comes to writing the invitations. The host must include her own name, the bride's name, the date and time of the shower, the location of the shower and relevant RSVP information, according to "Frugal Bride." Special themes or gift requests may also be included.

Baby Shower

Baby showers are time-sensitive events, as it's customary to host the shower before the baby arrives. Include the name of the new mom and the name of the baby if it has been determined. The date, time and location of the shower must also be included, along with RSVP and gift registry information.

Formal Showers

When writing formal shower invitations for any occasion, follow certain guidelines. The full names of the host and the subject of the shower (the bride, expectant mother, etc.) must be completely spelled out. No abbreviations other than Mr., Mrs. and Dr. are used in formal invitations. Middle names and titles are always used. Ask guests for "the honor of your presence" or "the pleasure of your company" when writing formal invitations. Spell out the time and date completely. Include the year without using an "and." For example: June the twenty-sixth, two thousand ten. Spell out the city and state where the event will take place in full, suggests Emily Post.
