Christmas Cupcake Ideas

Christmas Cupcake Ideas

Christmas is a great time to show off your cupcake-making skills. Making Christmas cupcakes doesn’t require a culinary background or a lot of time. Use icing, fondant, sprinkles and candy to dazzle your friends and family at Christmas with cupcakes. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Christmas Cupcakes

For less involved cupcakes stick with frosting and candy decorations. Any cupcake can be made with fondant if that is your preferred method. No matter what medium you choose these cupcakes look great on the dessert table and will taste even better. Try using red velvet cake mix or food coloring to give your cupcake a festive color beneath the icing. Begin decorating your cupcakes once they have cooled.

Snowman Cupcake: Use marshmallows, pretzels, fruit leather, sprinkles or decorating gel, and chocolate covered candies. After icing your cupcake stack marshmallows and add the arms, eyes, buttons, hat, scarf and nose.

Gingerbread Cupcakes: Ice the cupcake and stack gingerbread treats on top. If you use a gingerbread man, help him stand up by adding icing beneath his feet.

Christmas Tree Cupcakes: Ice your cupcakes with chocolate frosting. Lay sprinkles or M&M candies on the cake in the shape of a tree. Add yellow at the top for the star. You can also use a cupcake tree to stack multiple cupcakes and create a larger Christmas tree. Cover all but one cupcake with green candies or sprinkles. Cover the top cupcake with yellow sprinkles or candies.

Ornaments: Use fondant or frosting to cover the cupcake entirely. Use various colors of frosting or fondant to decorate your ornament. You can make all the cupcakes look the same or make each cupcake look different from the rest. Try to duplicate the ornaments on your tree.

Gift Box: This idea works for a single cupcake or those being stacked on a cupcake tree. After icing the cupcake use fondant or frosting to create a bow. The bow can be very basic or a larger with flowing ribbons.

Candy Cane Cupcakes: After the cupcakes are iced add red or green sprinkles sparingly. Insert tiny candy canes into the center of the cake with the hook part at the top of the candy cane facing outward. You can use one to four candy canes.

Santa Claus: This idea works best with fondant. The first layer on the cupcake should be white or peach colored. Add a white beard, black eyes and a red hat. In this same batch of cupcakes try to create a Mrs. Claus, elves, and Santa’s outfit.

Reindeer: Reindeer cupcakes are made almost entirely of chocolate. The icing or fondant should be brown. Use pretzels, candies and sprinkles to create antlers and facial features.

Poinsettia & Mistletoe: Try using fruit leather cut into the shape of these iconic Christmas plants. Use green and red icing or fondant if preferred.

Christmas Scene Cupcakes: Use fondant to create winter wonderland scenes. Mold tiny people and Christmas trees. Add a little girl sitting down making snowballs with tracks in the snow. Try making two little boys playing hockey. You can also create a person who is dragging Christmas lights through the snow. If you live in a warm climate where snow never comes during Christmas create a beach scene. Use graham cracker crumbs and blue fruit leather for the beach. Add a green Christmas tree on the beach.

Birthday Party Ideas For Boys Turning 11

Birthday Party Ideas for Boys Turning 11

Since they are not yet teenagers, and no longer a small child, 11 is an age that may be tricky for determining a creative party idea for a boy. By the age 11, however, most boys are accustomed to high energy activities such as sports or games at school. Here are a few high energy ideas for an 11year old boy's birthday party. Does this Spark an idea?

Indoor/Outdoor Murder Mystery Scavenger Hunt

Set up your living room or basement to resemble a crime scene. Plant clues around the house and yard that help the players answer "whodunnit." When the players get stuck, select a tie breaker game such as finding a safety pin in a bowl of rice. You could also incorporate timed challenges such as finding two houses with red doors in the neighborhood and taking a picture with the child posing like a soldier in front of them.

The important rule in this game is to keep the clues sequential. Each clue should lead to the next clue and get the children closer to solving the mystery in the end. This also helps to maintain a high energy level and interest in the game. Present a prize to the winning player or team.

Laser Tag Party

Laser tag, when played according to the rules, is a safe, fun way for all children to engage in the party. Set up your backyard with obstacles for the players to hide behind. Divide the children into two or three teams and let them battle with the laser guns. The benefit of having a laser tag party is that no matter what time the player arrives, he or she can join in the game.

Look in your local phone book for a list of laser tag rental companies. Often, they have packages for birthdays.

Game Show Party

Set up your living room or basement like the set of a game show. Use the sofas as the contestant area or as a live studio audience for players awaiting their turns. Select a game show that allows team play such as Family Feud. There is a version available for purchase that can be hooked up to your TV.

A card table or podium in the center of the room should be used for the host and players on a bonus round. Use two tables on either side of the room for each team. This party theme works best with less than 15 party guests.

Creative Ideas For Birthday Invitations

Get creative with guests' birthday party invitations.

Whether you're planning a milestone birthday or just want friends and family around to help you celebrate another year, getting guests excited about the party starts with the invitation. While you'll find boxes of birthday party invitations in card stores, taking a few steps to make yours stand out may make a difference when the R.S.V.P.'s start rolling in. Does this Spark an idea?

Not-So-Buried Treasure

Let party guests experience the thrill of the hunt while also enjoying the relaxing glow of a candle when you send their invitations inside a treasure candle. Treasure candles are large candles, which, as they burn, melt down to reveal tiny trinkets buried inside the wax. The treasures are removed and cleaned with tweezers; getting them inside the candle requires a few steps of pouring the wax partway, adding a few treasures, adding another layer of wax, and so on until you reach the top of the candle. Write out your invitation and roll or fold it up into a small plastic bubble, such as those dispensed by toy gumball machines. Make candles with large mason jars, wax colors to match your birthday theme colors and long wicks; materials are available at craft stores and candle shops. After your wax fills and cools halfway, add the invitation bubble and pour the rest of the wax, sealing your invitation inside.

Take the Cake

If the way to someone's heart is through his stomach, tempt him into coming to your party with an edible sweet treat. Bake a giant chocolate chip cookie cake, with ingredients such as brown sugar, eggs, chocolate chips and butter (take care to avoid any ingredients your guests may be allergic to). Once the cookie has baked and cooled, divide it up into large slices and use fine-tipped icing tubes or icing piping bags to add the birthday party details, such as the date, time and location of the event. Add a bit of edible birthday "bling" with colored sugar crystals, sprinkles or sugar metallic balls to decorate the slices. Hand-deliver in plastic take-out food containers or pack into boxes and take to the post office to ensure proper postage on the mailers.

Up in the Air

Get birthday guests in the party mood by inviting them to your special event via balloon. Create your party invitation on the computer or write out a standard boxed invitation card, including information about the location, date, time, theme and other details of the party. Starting with one of the edges of the invitation, roll up the paper into a very thin, tight curl, like a diploma. If the invitation is long, such as a sheet of 8.5 in. by 11 in. copy paper, fold it in half or quarters before rolling. Select balloons that go with your party's theme colors or buy balloons with a "Happy Birthday" logo printed on them. Insert the invitation into the neck of the balloon. Use a silver glitter marker to write "Invitation Inside!" on the balloon, slip into an envelope and send out to your intended party guests.

Diy Engagement Party Decorations

Celebrate your upcoming nuptials with an engagement party that is simple yet lovely.

The perfect way to announce your engagement to all your friends and family and to celebrate this wonderful event is to throw an engagement party. Don't worry about spending a lot on elaborate decorations. Save that money for your wedding day. An engagement party can be casual and informal, or more elegant, but either way you can cut costs by putting together simple and understated decorations yourself.

Instructions

1. Choose a venue for your party. This will determine what kind of decorations you need. If you're having your party outdoors, decor will be different from an indoor party held at your home, or a banquet room in a restaurant. Once you narrow down your location, it's easy to start planning your decorations.

2. Decide whether you will have a theme. For instance, a backyard party could have a Mexican or Hawaiian luau theme, and an indoor party could be either casual and laidback or have a cocktail party style theme. Use the theme as a guide for choosing your decorations.

3. Decorate tables with tablecloths that reflect your theme. Brighter colors would work for an outdoor party, or go with black and white for a more upscale look.

4. Add lots of flowers. Put bouquets into large vases and set them around the party space. Flowers instantly liven up a space and pull it together. Coordinate the flowers with the colors of your theme.

5. Light candles. Candles add instant romance and change the mood of a room.

6. Put together a photo collage or place framed photos of the couple throughout the party space.

7. Set pretty bowls of candies out on your tables.

8. Plug in some clear twinkle lights. With the candles, this will create a beautiful glow for your party. These look magical when used outside, especially in the evening.

Fruit Carving Ideas Including Pineapple Flowers

Fruit Carving Ideas Including Pineapple Flowers

Whether you are hosting a summer luncheon, a Sunday brunch, or an evening picnic, fruit carving is a great way to create an inexpensive, beautiful centerpiece which will be sure to delight your guests. While some of the techniques involved in carving more intricate designs can be a bit more difficult to master, there are many fruit shapes that beginners can easily create. Yet whatever kind of design you choose, it is important to make sure that you work with sharp tools which can cleanly cut through fruit skin. And because the fruit creations will have exposed fruit skin, it is also important that you wait to begin the process until one or two days before your event. Does this Spark an idea?

Watermelon Basket

To create your watermelon basket, you will need one medium or large watermelon, a spoon, sharp knife, non-toxic water ink marker and a fruit salad which will be used as the filling. After rinsing off the watermelon, cut a thin slice across the bottom so that it can lay flat on a tabletop. Use the marker to draw the outline of the handle of the "basket." The handle will extend around the top of the watermelon, down either side to the "base" of the basket (between 1/3 and 1/2 of the height of the watermelon). Use the knife to cut along the outline. Use the spoon to remove the remaining bits so that you are left with a free standing handle. Hollow out the interior of the basket with the knife and spoon (the watermelon can then be saved and used to create the fruit salad which will fill the basket). To create a more decorative rim, use the knife to cut "v" shapes from the top. Finally, fill your basket with the fruit salad you have prepared.

Mango Moon Flower

To create a mango moon flower you will need a mango, a carving knife and a sharp knife. Make sure you choose an unripe (green) mango which can be more easily carved into a delicate flower. After rinsing the skin, cut the mango along its length into two pieces. Use the carving knife to make a circular cut in the mango flesh of one side. Then use the carving knife to cut eight petals radiating from this center circle, and remove the mango flesh beneath each petal. Create a second layer of pointed petals by centering them beneath the first layer of petals. Remove the layer of fruit beneath these petals as well. Now you should be able to gently lift the flower from the rest of the mango. Depending on the size of the flower you chose, you may be able to make two to three flowers per mango half. These are great as plate garnishes or as cake adornments.

Pineapple Flower

In order to make pineapple flowers, you will need one medium sized pineapple, one sharp cutting knife and one flower cookie cutter. After rinsing the skin, lay the pineapple on its side and cut along the circumference to make slices that are about 1-inch thick. You should end up with 6 to 10 individual disks (depending on the size of the pineapple). Use the flower cookie cutter to cut the flowers out of each individual disk (1 to 2 depending on the width of the pineapple and size of the cutter).

Easy Way To Make Leis

Make your own leis to wear at Hawaiian luaus.

Visitors to Hawaii are frequently presented with leis -- colorful necklaces made from large, native flowers. Professional and hobbyist lei makers may braid stems and vines together to make these necklaces, but the simplest leis involve only needle, thread and flowers. If you know string beads, you can easily make leis for your next luau. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Collect 80 plumeria blossoms per lei. If you don't live near plumerias, use another colorful, medium-sized flower such as carnations, orchids or hibiscus. Cut blossoms off with floral shears or sharp scissors and store in a plastic bag in the refrigerator until ready for use.

2. Cut a 45 inch length of dental floss or fishing line. Thread a lei needle or long needle and tie a knot to secure. Do not double over the thread.

3. String flowers on the thread from front to back, piercing the needle through the centers. Shift each flower to the end of the line, leaving about 5 inches of thread at the end for tying. Stop adding flowers when there are 5 inches of free space on both ends of the thread.

4. Remove the needle and tie the free ends of the thread into a knot. Keep the lei in a plastic bag in the refrigerator until ready to wear.

A Substitute For Elderflower Cordial

White elderflowers from the elderberry bush create the basis for cordial.

Elderflower cordial is a sweet mixture with a distinctive floral fragrance. Elderflower cordial comes from the elderflower of Europe and can be bought at specialty liquor stores or on the Internet, but if you cannot find it, other ingredients will substitute for it in recipes. Does this Spark an idea?

Lychee Liqueur

Elderflower cordial is noted by "The Nibble" to have notes of lychee flavor. Lychee liqueur, while not an exact match, can replace elderflower cordial in recipes when a fruity, floral drink is needed.

Grand Marnier

Citrusy Grand Marnier is often the liqueur Elderflower cordial replaces in recipes, so it should stand that the replacement goes both ways. Substitute an equal amount of Grand Marnier for Elderflower cordial in your recipes for food and drinks. The citric acid in elderflower cordial makes Grand Marnier a comparable substitute.

Homemade

If you have time, make your own elderflower cordial overnight. Recipes for this abound on the Internet, but you will have to find your own source of fresh elderflowers. Ideally, you have them growing in your yard. They are bright white flowers. Be sure to only use those grown without pesticides. The basic recipe calls for steeping elderflowers in sugar syrup with lemon slices and citric acid overnight. The mixture is then strained and diluted with club soda for serving.

Fruit Liqueurs

Replace elderflower cordial with an equal amount of a fruit liqueur such as black current liqueur or apple liqueur. These mimic the fruity flavors in elderflower cordial. Black current liqueur and apple liqueur are often more readily available in liquor stores than elderflower cordial.

Elderberry Flower Drink Syrup

In international markets, look for elderberry flower drink syrup. This is a sweet infusion of elderflowers with sugar. It can be mixed with gin and tonic or with club soda for a summer drink alternative to lemonade. If you cannot find this in international markets, look on the Internet for this syrup. Replace elderflower cordial with the syrup on a one to one basis in your recipes.

Birthday Ideas For Turning 60

60th birthday

Birthdays are a special time in anyone's life, but turning 60 is a milestone year. A person who is turning 60 should be celebrated for her life's accomplishments and the years she's lived. By making a person's 60th birthday special, you can make him feel optimistic about the future and assure him that his life has meant something and will continue to do so. Does this Spark an idea?

60 Gifts

Gifts that center on the No. 60 can be fun. For example, if the recipient likes coffee, give a gift card to a coffee shop for $60 or 60 lbs. of coffee or enough coffee to make 60 cups. You also can give 60 $1 bills or 60 quarters as a monetary gift.

Memory Book

A memory book that tells the story of someone's life is appropriate for a person turning 60. Gathering photos, memorabilia and memories from friends and family members will help you create an accurate and meaningful memory book. It can include short notes from important people throughout the guest of honor's life, such as a spouse, children and close friends.

60 Party

Plan a surprise party focused on the No. 60. The decorations, the cake and the music can all celebrate the person's age. A cutout of the No. 60 can be suspended from the ceiling, and an old flat bedsheet with the No. 60 painted on it can serve as a wall hanging for the party. Confetti in the shape of the No. 60 is also a fun touch. Centerpieces can be a photo tree highlighting different eras of the person's life. Play music from 60 years ago, when the person was born, for the background music.

5th Grade Memory Ideas For A Graduation

Create a memory of elementary school.

Reflect upon the grade school years with a memory-themed project that inspires students, parents and teachers to take a look back at the path from kindergarten through fifth grade. From photos books and collages to heartfelt poetry, students can mark the end of the elementary school journey during a graduation event or party with a uniquely artistic craft or a memory-filled writing project.

Memory Book

A fifth grade memory book is a creative memento of the grade school years that students can keep for themselves, give to a teacher or present as a gift to the principal. Unlike a yearbook, this handmade craft is specific to the class and includes memories of the entire elementary school experience from kindergarten through grade five. Start with a blank scrap or sketch book. Collect photos of the students taken at school parties, celebrations, shows, sports and in class. Make sure to include photos of the actual school building, teachers, school staff members and field trips. Organize the photos into chronological order and by event or occasion. For example, the kindergarten first day of school pictures would come first with fifth grade celebrations last. Add in stenciled or decorative labels for each page.

Written Memories

Create a collection of colorful stories from the fifth grade class to read during a graduation ceremony or party. Ask each student to write one or two paragraphs featuring a special memory from the elementary school years. This may include a field trip, a favorite teacher, a school event or any other occasion relating to the class's time at the school. Copy the individual pages and bind together in book form. Either use metal fasteners, staples or yarn 'sewn' through hole punches to secure the pages together. Give one copy to each student.

Poetry

Compliment a fifth grade graduation with inspirational poetry that contains a memory theme. Help students to craft their own creations or choose from sentimental poems written by Rudyard Kipling, Edgar A. Guest or George Elliot. Choose poetry that can be easily understood by children.

Memory Collage

Instruct fifth graders to design a memory collage using photos and small mementos of the grade school years. Start with a large piece of poster board or a project board that is at least 22 by 28 inches in size. Collect a variety of photos from the elementary school years that feature the students, teachers, school staff members and special occasions. Use nontoxic, clear-drying glue to attach the pictures to the board. For added interest, have the students cut the photos into hearts or circles. Glue on additional items, including a class list, a brochure from a favorite field trip spot, a program from a school or another elementary school memory item. After the glue dries, have each student sign the collage with a permanent marker.

Games For Kids In Hawaii

Kids can play Hawaiian-style bowling at the Polynesian Cultural Center.

Although parents might be content to relax on one of Hawaii's breathtaking beaches, kids typically require more active forms of entertainment. It's not enough to hand them a bottle of coconut-scented sunscreen and say, "Have fun!" Whether you're a visitor to the state or a permanent resident, the numerous games available for kids in Hawaii ensures your entire family will never run out of things to do.

Polynesian Cultural Center

A theme park located about an hour's drive from Honolulu, the Polynesian Cultural Center offers children and their families an entire day's worth of games. With seven villages representing various island cultures, kids can play Tongan shuffleboard, learn a Maori stick game called tititorea and compete at konane, an ancient form of checkers that uses stone boards. Pala'ie, a game featuring a coconut handle with a hoop on one end and a cloth ball secured by a string to the other, allows kids to practice their dexterity. Ula maika, a form of Hawaiian bowling, pits kids against parents to take home the win.

Hawaii Children's Discovery Center

Although adolescents might appreciate the museum's exhibits, Hawaii Children's Discovery Center primarily features activities designed for younger kids. The "Tot Spot" offers games for toddlers and "Your Town" lets elementary-school children play grownup for a day. Costumes and props transform them into firefighters, judges, bankers and TV interviewers. In "Hawaiian Rainbows," children can pretend to navigate a ship, fly a plane or harvest pineapples. "Your Rainbow World" introduces kids to a globe-trotting lifestyle, as they enjoy tea in a Japanese home, cast a net in an island fishing boat and travel to the Philippines.

Kamalani Playground

Built by a community of over 7,000 volunteers, Kamalani Playground at Lydgate State Park has been entertaining children and the young at heart since 1994. Kids play hide-and-seek among the rock caves, as well as in an extensive labyrinth that features an elaborate mirror maze. Younger children compete at tic-tac-toe on colorful cement blocks and swing on miniature jungle gyms. Older kids can play Hawaiian lullabies on numbered musical pipes, then race each other down giant volcano slides. Three full-sized soccer fields let kids burn off extra energy, while parents burn off second helpings of chicken luau and pineapple cake.

Kapiolani Park

Kapiolani Park, located in Honolulu, boasts family-friendly activities seven days a week. Kids can play softball, volleyball and rugby, accompanied by ukelele performances. Tennis courts let them practice their swing, while surrounded by huge banyan trees. Older kids can test their skills at the archery range and younger kids can participate in a kite-flying contest. Kapiolani Park also features Honolulu Cricket Club, the only cricket club in the state. Courts can be reserved in advance for day or night games.

Hairstyles For Round Faces With Long Heavy Wavy Hair

Long hair looks well on women with a round face.

Round faces tend to be just as wide as they are long. For women with round faces there are certain cuts and styles that look great...and others not so great. However, one hairstyle that looks good on round faces is long hair--or, at least, hair longer than your chin. If your hair is about shoulder length or longer, picking out the best hairstyles will be easy. Does this Spark an idea?

Ratting your hair

One very flattering look for women with long hair and a round face is to rat the hair. Ratting the hair will not only give the illusion of super fullness, but it will also elongate the face, making it look more oval shaped. You can rat your hair with any hairstyle--from a ponytail to pulling your hair up on the sides--to give your face a slimmer look. To rat your hair, purchase an actual rat tail comb (although a regular comb might work, the look won't last). A rat tail comb has very thin and fine bristles, as well as a long skinny handle, or "tail." Use the tail to separate a top section of hair at the crown of your head. Holding the section up, push the comb's bristles through your hair from the top to the bottom. This will create a "nest" of hair at the crown of your head that the section will fall over, making it look raised. Continue to do this with 2 to 3 sections of hair. Allow the hair sections to fall down and gently comb them over the raised hair nests to smooth them out without combing the nests out.

Side part and swept bangs

Hair parted in the middle allows the hair to perfectly frame your face. This look is fine for people with oval or triangle shaped heads, but not for those with round heads. The middle part will enhance the roundness of your face making your face look fuller. Instead, create a side part and swept bangs. If you don't already have bangs, ask your stylist to cut you some. You'll want thinner bangs since your hair is heavy and wavy (you don't want too much hair hanging in front of your face). The bangs should fall in between your eyebrows and eyelashes when your eyes are open. You may also have to "train" your hair to stay on the side if you've always worn it the middle. The best way to do this is to wash your hair and blow it dry using a medium- to large-sized brush. Use the brush to pull your hair over while you apply the heat from the hair dryer. This method can also be used to train your bangs to sweep to the side.

A "low" half-up half-down

For a more elegant look, try a half-up half-down look. However, instead of clipping your hair up at the crown of your head, allow the hair to hang low near the base of your head. Rat your hair to add volume and height first. If you're going out, you may want to add a little hairspray to make sure that your look holds. Grab hold of the hair that falls just below either ear and sweep it around the back. Hold onto both sections of hair at the base of your head with one hand. Insert a tiny clip or a clear, plastic hair tie to keep the hair in place. This look is chic and fun; it's great to wear out to a wedding or a night on the town.

Hawaiian Birthday Party Ideas

Planning a birthday party for a friend or loved one can be challenging. Selecting something as original and fun as a Hawaiian luau will make the party memorable to every guest who attends and most important, the guest of honor. To plan the ultimate Hawaiian birthday party, you need to get a few things in order. Does this Spark an idea?

Hawaiian Invitations

Make your own invitations on your computer so that you can include beach scenes and tropical images on the invitation. Each invitation can be a work of art when you make them on your own. Hand-delivered invitations can be even more interesting with seashells and colored stones. Add as many embellishments as you want to hand-delivered invitations.

The Décor

Nothing says Hawaiian luau like leis and exotic flowers. If the decorating budget allows, use real flowers as much as possible. Exotic flowers such as orchids and tuberoses give that tropical feel to the party location. You can also put down pieces of artificial grass inside to give the feeling that you're having the party outside. Artificial grass can be found in any lawn and gardening store for a reasonable price. Put it down on tabletops where you lay out the food.

Blue and green streamers add to the tropical feeling in the room. Add cardboard cutouts of palm and coconut trees to the walls to give the final touch to the party location. Add tiki torches outside to give the party a romantic look.

Hawaiian Food

A Hawaiian birthday party deserves a special cake. A beach scene on the cake is relatively easy to do, with blue icing and brown sugar for sand. Fruit salad with plenty of pineapple is a nice addition to the spread. Pork dishes and fish make good main course choices; fruit smoothies are a nice touch to go along with the meal.

Bone up on tropical drink recipes so that you can serve some real exotic drinks to older guests. Make sure there are non-alcoholic drinks available as well for your guests.

Hawaiian Luau Activities

Plan limbo contests inside and Hawaiian music for dancing and listening. A party outside means plenty of room for volleyball and other beach activities. Party games such as trivia games and charades can be a part of a Hawaiian luau as well.

Try learning hula dancing or even buy some hula-hoops.

The Hawaiian luau can be planned for any time of the year. It's an especially fun theme for a party in the middle of the winter. Have some tropical fun inside with tropical drinks and lovely beach scenes created inside the party room.

Children'S Birthday Cake Decorations

Children's birthday cake decorations come in all shapes, sizes and characters. Decorating a child's birthday cake is an exercise in appealing to a child's favorite television show, sport or entertainment. Decorations can vary in type from plastic figures to icing decorations to silk screening on the frosting. Does this Spark an idea?

Pirates and Princesses

These standards for boys and girls maintain their appeal. The cake may be decorated with generic or popular princesses (typically Disney) or pirates. The cake may also be decorated as a castle, a crown, a ship or a sword.

Sports

Sports themes are popular with young boys and girls. Children's birthday cake decorations can include popular sports figures and sports teams. Cakes shaped as various types of balls (soccer, football, baseball) are another popular birthday cake decorating technique.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles

While vehicle-based cakes are generally more popular with boys than girls, cakes can be shaped as the vehicles or decorated with plastic vehicles. Popular characters from the Disney film "Cars" joined this cake-decorating trend.

Animals

Animals continue to be a popular children's birthday cake decoration, from real animals to stuffed animals. Options include zoo decorations, African savannas and Care Bears. Animal shapes are liked but are not as popular as cakes decorated with scenes and figures ("101 Dalmatians," "Hotel For Dogs").

Classic Cakes

While children enjoy the toys decorating their cakes, many simply want a cake with their name and age. A classic cake may include a number, sprinkles, number-shaped candles and a child's name written in icing.

Fun Family Reunion Ideas

Fun Family Reunion Ideas

Too often, when people think of family reunions, they cringe. They picture being forced to mingle with relatives they don't remember and have nothing in common with. With a little creativity, though, you can help people break the ice and discover family connections. Your family will thank you for it later. Does this Spark an idea?

A Cook-Off

If you have a few cooks in your family, hold a cook-off. They could prepare food ahead of time, or at the reunion. Let everyone taste their dishes and vote on them. (Tip: Don't announce how close the results are!) The cooks will enjoy it, and so will everyone else.

Storytelling

Ask older members of the family to tell stories about when they were kids. The grandchildren will love hearing embarrassing stories about their parents. Storytelling is a great way to bring the whole family together.

A Triathalon or Olympics

This activity can have traditional and silly events. Intersperse races with water-balloon tosses, horseshoes, and swimming relays (if you're near a pool or lake). Include non-physical activities like riddles and word-finds to give everyone a breather and involve all members of the family. Give fun, inexpensive prizes like inexpensive stuffed animals to the winners.

A Family Collage

Bring a big piece of poster board and a bunch of paints, plus magazines to cut pictures out of, and other art supplies such as construction paper and glue. Bring pictures of all family members to use in the collage, or ask everyone to bring their own pictures. Work from a table in a central location. Each person can add something to the collage, making it a group effort.

Games

Hold a scavenger hunt at your reunion. Let people work in pairs or teams to find the hidden clues, and have a prize for the winner. Or play games such as a sack race, capture the flag, red light green light, musical chairs, tug of war, or freeze tag (see family-reunion.com for descriptions). Many adults as well as kids will enjoy these games.

A Talent Show

The website Family-Reunion.com suggests holding a talent show at your reunion. Your family undoubtedly has a wide range of talents and interests, which other family members may not even know about. Aside from being entertaining, a talent show gives you time to get to know your family members better. And that's what reunions are all about.

About Collectible Books

About Collectible Books

As a hobby and a business, book collecting can be thrilling and profitable. Book collecting is popular because it is not reserved only for the wealthy; people of any income level can enjoy book collecting. Searching for valuable books can be exciting and rewarding, much like treasure hunting.

Why Collect Books?

There are three main reasons why people collect books: for the excitement of the hunt, for the love of literature and rare books, and for the potential of making money. Valuable books can be found in the most unlikely of places such as discount book bins and thrift stores. It is this often exciting search for rare and valuable books that motivates many booksellers and collectors.

Also, much of book collecting involves an increase in value over time, so a book that may be a relatively inexpensive investment now, could be worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars down the road. Antiquarian booksellers and authors of several books on collecting, Allen and Patricia Ahearn, for example, bought a first edition copy of J.D. Salinger's "Catcher in the Rye" in the early 1960s for under $20. Today, a nice first edition of this classic novel sells for $2,500. Collecting books can be a decent investment, especially when you can sell a book for more than you paid. But be aware that book collecting is not profitable as a short-term investment as it is likely that anywhere from 5-10 years or more must pass until you'll see any significant appreciation in value. It is therefore common for book collectors to pass their collections down to their children as part of their estate.

Often, people who love to read decide to collect books just out of the sheer love of literature just as someone who appreciates fine art enjoys collecting pieces to display in his home. Such as an art collector would treasure an original Picasso or Renoir, so a book collector would value a first edition of "To Kill a Mockingbird" or a Harry Potter novel signed by the author. Whereas a non-collector would be satisfied with a library or paperback copy to read, a book collector strives to find more rare and special copies.

Decide Which Books to Collect

Some collectors focus solely on one genre of literature, like science fiction or classics, or only books from a certain author or time period, while others collect many different types of books. Some collect different versions of the same classic book like "Gone with the Wind" or "Alice in Wonderland." There is no particular genre or author that's always more valuable; what collectors acquire is purely a matter of their own preferences. Series of books are often greatly valued by collectors. For example, it may be nice to acquire a first edition Nancy Drew novel from 1959, but a collection of the entire 56-book series would be a real treasure to an avid collector.

What Factors Determine a Book's Value?

Determining the value of a book is not an exact science and depends upon a number of factors. According to the Antiquarian Booksellers' Association of America, "The value of a book is affected by a variety of factors, including the intrinsic importance of the work, its scarcity, and collectors' interest in it. In general, the books most sought after are the great works in the humanities and the sciences, usually in the first editions."

Other factors that affect a book's value include its condition, binding, place of origin and whether or not it is signed by the author or has any other inscriptions. A book's condition is critical to its value to a collector. Book collectors take great pains to protect their books from age and wear; many books are wrapped in plastic and never opened. Of course, you may want to read a collectible book; if so, you should do it very carefully so as not to rip or dirty any pages or crack the binding. You should remove and carefully store a book's dust jacket as while you are reading it, it is possible you may damage it. Books should be sold with their dust jackets whenever possible; without its jacket, a book's value will likely be reduced up to 90 percent. A book that is considered in excellent condition is as close in appearance to the day it was printed as possible. When a seller puts a book up for sale, they describe the book's condition in great detail. Books that are in excellent condition are often called "as new." An upper end book might be described as "very fine" or "fine." Below that, a book may be "very good." Books that are not in good condition will not likely bring a profit unless they are extremely rare.

There is not just one easy reference which lists the prices of collectible books, but rather thousands of "price guides" which booksellers and collectors use to help determine a book's monetary value. But these guides are just that, general guidelines by which books are priced. There are many other factors to be considered and books are commonly sold for much different prices than the guides suggest. Oftentimes, regardless of what a price guide says, a buyer might be willing to pay even more if a book is of particular sentimental value.

Examples of commonly used price guides are: "Book Collecting 2000: A Comprehensive Guide" by Allen & Patricia Ahearn and "20th Century First Edition Fiction: A Price and Identification Guide" by Thomas Lee.

Book Collector Community

Avid book collectors will seek out book signing events, often traveling long distances to meet authors and have their books signed. In addition to the excitement of meeting famous authors, having a book signed by its author can increase the value of a book greatly. Book conventions such as BookExpo America provide opportunities for booksellers and collectors to meet and share their experiences. At these conventions, books are bought and sold, and many famous authors attend to speak and participate in book signings.

The Internet has changed book collecting and selling for the better. Finding collectible books and people to buy and sell them is more convenient than ever before. Some booksellers create their own websites or use well-established sites like eBay or Craigslist to buy and sell books. There are also numerous organizations such as the American Booksellers Association and the International Book Collectors Association which provide online resources and information.

Don't Just Get In It for the Money

Although you can profit from book collecting, if money is your main motivation, you are better off investing in the stock market or real estate. For those who truly love books and reading, book collecting is about more that just the economic value of collectible books -- it is really in the satisfaction of having a beloved and rare book on the shelf to be treasured for many years to come.

German Shepherd Puppy Training Tips

German shepherds make loyal companions if trained from an early age.

A German Shepherd's powerful body, keen senses and strong devotion and loyalty make it the prime choice of canine to fill a number of roles, from best friend to police dog to herding on the farm. Despite their natural inclination to help, Shepherds must be trained from a young age to properly fill these roles, so instruction must begin when they are puppies to ensure success.

Dominant Roles

One of the most important things to remember about your Shepherd is that it's a strong-minded and firm-willed animal. In dog society, members earn the respect of other dogs in the pack by asserting dominance, and your German Shepherd will try to do the same with you. In other words, to truly get it to respect and obey you, you must show your Shepherd who's boss. From day one, be firm, but not harsh. Make sure your puppy understands that you control how fast it walks on the leash, when it gets to go outside, when and how much it eats and other basic requirements. This lets your Shepherd know that it's important and loved, but you are the one in charge.

Reward vs. Punishment

Similar to providing a child a tap on the hand or on the butt when they misbehave, many dog owners assume that a tap on the snout or the behind when something is done wrong will teach a dog properly behave. Punishment of any kind, however --- even if it is only a light tap --- will lead your German Shepherd to mistrust you and stop listening. Instead, work on a system of rewards. If your Shepherd behaves, it receives an edible reward. It should not receive this type of food at any other time. If your dog does not do what it's told, it does not receive the treat and is firmly told "No." Do not yell or try to scare your Shepherd; it will only mistrust you more and you'll have trouble teaching it anything.

Traning Environment

Shepherds are extremely smart, and therefore want to know what is going on around them. To get your dog to pay attention only to you during training, you must remove all distractions. There should be no toys, other people or animals in the training area: only you, your Shepherd and the reward you will give it for doing well. As your dog gets older and becomes partially trained, you may need to use toys as training tools, such as dummies for rescue dogs or herding eggs for farm dogs.

Where to Begin

If you're not sure where to start with your Shepherd puppy, try the basic "come" command. This is an important one for your dog to understand from the beginning. This will allow you to take it more places for training and for fun, and even let it off the leash at a dog park or similar area with confidence. Remember to withhold the treat until your dog comes right to you and sits down; reward it each time it successfully completes the task.

Elderberry & Elderflower

Elderberries should not be eaten raw.

Also known as the elder, elderberry and black elder, the European elder is a tree or shrub that grows throughout Europe and the United States. Its berries and flowers are believed to hold medicinal properties, used in healing a variety of ailments.

Effects

Historically, people have used the berries and flowers of the elder plant to treat coughs, infections and skin conditions. Today, elderberries and elderflowers are used to treat influenza, constipation and bacterial sinusitis, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. The University of Maryland Medical Center (UMM) also claims that the elder plant may help to ease swelling and relieve congestion.

Considerations

Elderberries can induce severe stomach reactions, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. To prevent toxic reactions, uncooked and unripe elderberries should not be consumed.

Warning

The UMM cautions that elderflowers act as a diuretic. Avoid combining elderflowers and berries with medications like hydrochlorthiazide (HydroDIURIL), amiloride (Midamor), bumetanide (Bumex) and other drugs that increase urination. Contact your health care provider before taking this or any other dietary supplement.

Fun Wedding Shower Game Ideas

Fun games keep guests involved in the party.

One way to make bridal showers more exciting is by adding fun games to play. Games keep the party guests entertained and involved in the party. Fun wedding shower games also introduce any unfamiliar faces and give each guest a chance to make new friends. Have games planned and ready to play, to give your bride-to-be a fun-filled wedding shower she will remember for years to come. Does this Spark an idea?

Never Cross Your Legs

As each guest arrives at the party, give her clothespin or necklace. Find plastic bridal necklaces online and at retail stores that are cute to use. Tell each guest she is not allowed to cross her legs. If another player catches you with your legs crossed, that player can take your necklace. If a player has many necklaces and crosses her legs, she only has to give up one necklace. At the end of the shower, the guest with the most necklaces wins the game.

Scavenger Hunt

Divide the guests up into two even teams or if you have several players- divide them into five or six even teams. Give each team the same list of items to hunt. The players try to find these items in the handbags they brought. List items such as something old, something new, a garter, something to use as a veil and something borrowed. Write points for each item and give the teams a 15 minute time limit. At the end of 15 minutes, the team that earns the most points wins the game.

Bride Memories

When sending out the invitations, have each guest send you an email of a memory she has of the bride and groom. Print each memory with no name and paste it into a memory book. Let the bride-to-be read each memory aloud at the shower and guess who wrote it. The bride-to-be can mark the name on each page and keep the memory book as a keepsake.

You Got the White Stuff

Fill about 10 plastic bags with random white stuff such as cornstarch, baby powder, powdered milk, baking soda, salt and sugar. Label each bag with a number and make sure to write down what is in each bag. Give each player a pen and paper, and have them guess what is in each bag. The player that gets the most correct answers wins the game.

To make this game harder, blindfold each guest and only allow her to smell each item.

Fun Babythemed Food For A Shower

Have fun planning a creative baby shower.

At your shower, feature creative dishes, snacks and sweet treats that highlight cute baby items such as bonnets, rattles, carriages and toys. Do this by using kitchen tools to change the shape of certain foods or add a baby-themed spin with frosting and edible candies that look like items you would see in a nursery. The end result will surprise guests and put a smile on the new mother's face. Does this Spark an idea?

Vegetable Ideas

Serve baby carrots, cucumber slices and cherry tomatoes in small paper baby shoes. Adorn a decorative round tray with dozens of these veggie-filled paper booties. Place dip in the middle of the display for those who like to dip their carrots in ranch dressing. Only put dry vegetables in the shoes. You can also place vegetables inside real baby shoes as long as the shoes are brand new. Adorn other baby-themed trays shaped like rattles, bottles and other items with more veggies and dip, depending on how many guests you're having.

Fruit Ideas

Prepare creative fruit dishes that have a baby-themed spin for your friend's baby shower. Cut a large watermelon to look like a baby buggy or carriage and fill it with chopped fruit. Cut circular orange slice wheels and use toothpicks to attach these to all four sides. Use baby-themed cookie cutters to sculpt slabs of honeydew melon, pineapple and watermelon into fun shapes like rattles and baby bottles.

Other Foods

Serve chip portions in small pink, blue or baby-themed cupcake holders and place these on a tray with salsa in the middle. Make chicken salad, turkey or roast beef sandwiches and cut these into triangle wedges, circles, squares or other fun shapes. Find toothpicks with rattles and other baby items attached at the party store and place these in the center of each sandwich. Serve food on trays shaped like baby feet or other cute items.

Desserts

Make cookies, cakes and other treats that fit the theme of the your shower. Chocolate fudge brownies with edible baby rattles or colorful sprinkles work well. You can also make cupcakes with sweet baby faces or edible baby-themed items on each one. Make the faces with colorful frosting or find baby cupcake decor at the party store. Cupcakes with the new baby's name and little flowers or ladybugs can work well. Baby boy cupcakes can showcase things boys love such as dinosaurs, baseball and other toys along with tiny blue edible rattles. Make bite-sized square cakes covered in frosting on all sides to resemble baby blocks with letters, numbers or toys on each one.

Activities To Practice Multiplication Facts

Hold a dry-erase race.

It's a fact: memorizing the times tables is a must. But getting your students to practice their math facts is often easier said than done. You can drill them with timed tests, but too many paper drills can leave some students feeling pressured and stressed. Instead, try some creative activities that will motivate your students to learn.

Dry-Erase Races

Divide the class into two or more teams (or just use rows) and have dry-erase races. Ask one person from each team or row to come up to the dry-erase board. Then, say a multiplication problem (or use a flashcard). The first student that uncaps the pen, writes a complete math sentence with the correct answer, recaps the pen and puts it down, wins a point for their team. Continue until everyone has had a chance to compete for their team.

Multiplication Bingo

Ask each student to fold a blank piece of paper (printer paper is fine) in half four times, then open it back up. Once opened, the paper should have 16 squares as delineated by the fold lines. Then have the students fill in the squares with numbers that are multiples of whatever multiplication facts you are working on. For example, if you are working on 2s and 5s, the students may write 10, 25, 40, and so on. You might need to write the numbers on the board for younger students, but remind them to fill in the squares randomly. Shuffle some multiplication flashcards (sort them ahead of time so they are only the facts you are working on) and hold them up, one at a time. Hold each one up for about five seconds, then set it aside. The students should solve the problem and cross off the answer if they have it written down in one of their squares. The first person to get four crossed off in a row wins. Use the set aside cards to check to make sure the student does indeed have a "Bingo." This game can be played with no talking.

Multiplication Baseball

Create a bulletin board that encourages your students to get through those timed multiplication drills. Decorate a bulletin board to look like a baseball field and write each student's name on a baseball. Designate first base facts 0-3, second base as multiplication facts 4 and 5, third base as facts 6 and 7, and home plate is for facts 8 and 9. As soon as a child masters his multiplication facts as evidenced by mastery of the timed drill, move the baseball with his name on it to the corresponding base. Once the students get "home," they no longer have to do the drills. You can also hand out small prizes each time a student moves to a new base.

Birthday Party Ideas For Teens

Celebrate your teen birthday in style.

As young men and women progress through their teen years, birthday celebrations will abound. Aside from sweet 16 bashes and the celebration of adulthood at 18, the birthdays before and after those notable occasions also deserve special recognition. If your teen is celebrating a birthday soon and you're looking for ways to celebrate his big day, consider your options in choosing a birthday party theme.

Talk to Your Teen About Her Party

When considering what type of birthday party to throw for a teen, communicate with her about her likes and dislikes. This will give you a better idea of what kind of party to have. For example, while a surprise birthday party may seem like a good idea to you, it may not seem like a good idea to a teen who is shy and would be embarrassed by this sort of party.

Milestone Birthday Parties

Sweet 16 parties and bashes celebrating 18th birthdays are generally big celebrations. These birthdays should be celebrated with as many of the teen's friends as possible and should have a theme to enhance the celebration. Hollywood red carpet-themed parties, car-themed parties for 16th birthdays and Vegas night-themed parties are popular ideas for these celebrations. Get the teen involved with the party planning to ensure that he enjoys the celebration.

Teen Party Themes

Throwing a spa day birthday party can also be entertaining for teens. Take your teen and her friends to a day spa and pamper them with manicures, pedicures and massages. Then, take the group to the teen's favorite restaurant for lunch or dinner. Bring her favorite flavored cake along to let her blow out the candles. For teen guys, throwing a party at an arcade is a great way to celebrate a birthday. Most arcades, such as Dave and Buster's and Malibu Grand Prix, have birthday packages that include include tokens to play games, lunch, a birthday cake and accessories such as party hats.

Best Times for Teen Birthday Parties

For teens 15 and younger, it is generally a good idea to have birthday parties during the day on the weekends so that there won't be curfew issues. For teens 16 and older, throwing birthday parties on the weekend during the evening can be acceptable with adult supervision and approval of the friends' parents.

What to Think About When Planning a Teen Party

Parents who are throwing parties for teens should consider their budget in the planning, number of invitees, number of chaperones, whether the party will have boys and girls and where the party will be held.

Disney Decorating Ideas

Enter the world of Disney every time you enter your room.

A Disney decorating theme is broad enough to satisfy any taste, and is varied enough to accommodate any budget. You can be subtle by using colors and accessories that only imply a certain Disney theme, or you can go all out and use murals, prints and decorations that center around your favorite movie or character. Disney themes can be customized to suit a baby's nursery, a toddler's room or even a young-at-heart adult's room. Set your budget before you begin to avoid going over - once you get into the Disney flow, it may be hard to stop. Does this Spark an idea?

A Favorite Movie

Center the theme around a favorite movie. Little boys may like a "Cars" or "Pirates of the Caribbean" theme, while girls may prefer a "Cinderella" or "Snow White" theme. Create the mood of the movie in the room by re-creating the main setting of the movie. Paint murals on the walls - or if you are not artistically inclined, use some of the many wall decals Disney sells. Buy bedding first - they sell bedroom sets for all major Disney movies - and base your color scheme off of that. Add accessories that tie into the theme. A Cars-themed room might have toy cars and trucks as decoration, while a Snow White theme may include an apple motif. A Pirates theme could include distressed wood furniture that mimics the look of a pirate's chest, and a Cinderella theme could include a real glass slipper (available through Disney) on a shelf.

A Favorite Character

Choose a favorite character to base the theme around. Little girls would love a Disney princess room with a castle mural, an iridescent veil over the bed and a sparkly tiara on the dresser. Use plenty of sparkles and feathers in the decoration and don't forget to put a "mirror, mirror, on the wall". Little boys may enjoy a "Wall-E" theme, complete with robots and futuristic space-themed decor. Paint the ceiling dark blue or black, and use glow-in-the-dark star decals. Winnie the Pooh is a popular nursery theme, with its soft yellow, green and brown palette. Crib sets and even matching clothing sold by Disney make it easy to outfit the entire room in an afternoon.

The Parks

Adults may prefer the more subtle approach of basing a room around the look of the Disney parks. Think about an All-American hometown feel, with Norman Rockwell-like perfection. Base the theme on Disney's Main Street USA, using a rich jewel-tone palette, vintage signs and antique wall sconces that echo the old fashioned street lamps. Or, take inspiration from the Disney Boardwalk by using pale pastels and a beach theme - add vintage bare-bulb lights and carousel pieces for an authentic look. Teens might enjoy a room inspired by Disney's Pleasure Island, with it's graffiti-like wall murals and moving colored lights. Throw in a disco ball for the ultimate Saturday night feel. It is possible to conjure the Disney magic without plastering the walls with mouse ears.

Birthday Theme Cupcake Ideas

Individual-sized cakes serve as an unexpected alternative to the traditional birthday cake.

For a whimsical alternative to a cake, the birthday cupcake is a fun choice for a birthday party for any age. If you're looking for a way for the cupcakes to compliment the theme of your party--or help focus a theme, if you don't already have one--consider your many options. If you can't settle on an idea, remember than you're trying to celebrate the birthday person and think about what makes that person unique. Does this Spark an idea?

Activity-Themed Cupcakes

Usually based on the lifestyle of the birthday person, an activity-themed cupcake celebrates a certain sport or hobby. For example, if a six-year-old is enthralled with baseball, turn every cupcake into a baseball. Other designs could include a baseball diamond or a baseball bat. If your birthday friend is a NASCAR enthusiast, design your cupcakes with little NASCAR cars; if your friend loves gambling, try using card suits or dice.

Animal-Themed Cupcakes

An idea more geared toward kids than adults, animal-themed cupcakes involve turning a cupcake into the likeness of a particular animal. Put two green eyes on a cupcake, and it's a frog; stick two gingerbread cookie halves in, add a cherry nose and two eyes, and it's a dog. The Disney FamilyFun website shows instructions on make a cat using liquorice for whiskers, M&Ms for a mouth and peppermint patty triangles for ears. Martha Stewart's site offers a recipe for making a hedgehog design cupcake, as well as a spider and bee design. Use a child's favorite animal or multiple animals for a zoo or wilderness theme.

Character-Themed Cupcakes

At any given point, a child will be most drawn to a particular television show or cartoon character, such as Thomas the Tank Engine or Dora the Explorer. Cupcakes can be decorated with a likeness of these characters (just their faces, if it's easier) or moments from the show.

Classic-Themed Cupcakes

For a less whimsically designed birthday party, stick with the basics: the birthday person's name, for example, or flowers, or an abstract design. Learn the basic cupcake design techniques from the site Cupcake Decorating Ideas and study the main icing techniques: rosette, shell, star, basket, rope, leaves and ruffle. Play around with these until you feel you have a design that reflects the birthday person (or just something you think looks great).

Brand-Themed Cupcakes

A brand-loyal adult or child would be thrilled to see cupcakes decorated with the logo of his favorite brand. Examples include a computer or electronics company logo, automobile brand logos or clothing company logos.

Foods To Serve At An Hawaiian Luau

A luau is a Hawaiian celebration featuring music and food.

The luau is the celebratory feast of the Hawaiians. Among the attractions at such a festival is the ukulele music, the colorful dress and the food, which is the main staple of the event. Luau hosts cook a variety of foods for their guests -- including chicken and various types of fish. According to the Polynesian Culture Center website, the purpose of a luau is to celebrate milestones within the Hawaiian family community, whether it is a baby's first birthday, a wedding or a graduation. Does this Spark an idea?

Poi

Poi is a traditional Hawaiian staple. The fresh version of this dish is known as sweet poi, while sour poi is that which you have allowed to age for a few days prior to serving, making it somewhat more tangy. To make this dish, you pound boiled taro roots, then mash them with water until the consistency becomes smooth. You may add salt, soy sauce, or even sugar as a seasoning for this food.

Lomilomi

Lomilomi is a type of salmon that you break into small pieces by massaging it, hence the name, for lomilomi is the Hawaiian term for massage. To give this food the characteristic tang, you mix it with tomatoes, onions and other such condiments. Western sailors introduced this method of cooking fish to the Hawaiians.

Egg Rolls

Egg rolls are a favorite of Hawaiians. Indeed, this dish, an Asian favorite -- is bound to be found at Hawaiian luaus. In order to make this dish, you roll the egg roll itself out ahead of time. Fry in a deep fryer or stove top. But wait until you are ready to serve it, because for best taste results you should serve it fresh off the grill.

Plantains

A plantain is somewhat similar to a banana except that it is much less sweet and more starchy. Plantains are a staple in tropical regions of the world, and Hawaiians use them as a sweet side dish. You may eat them when they are not quite ripe, when it tastes like a potato-like starch, or you can wait unitl the skin blackens and the inside becomes a little softer. When this happens, don't worry, it's not quite rotten. In fact, if you fry it in that particular state, it will accent the sweetness. Slice the plantain, place it in a frying pan, then add about two tablespoons of cooking oil. Wait until it has slightly browned before serving.

Banana Bread

Banana bread derives its popularity at luaus to the ubiquity of the fruit itself in Hawaii. The banana, along with the pineapple, is one of the most widely grown fruits in the region. Luau hosts often serve banana bread as a side starch. To make the dish moist, cook this food with many bananas. Instead of placing the bananas in a food processor, use a fork to smash them. This will accent the taste of bananas to the point that your guests will notice their presence in every bite.

Backyard Decorating Ideas For A Surprise Birthday

A plain white tablecloth and colorful flower arrangements add sophistication to an outdoor party.

Your loved one enjoys being outdoors, which means a surprise party in the comfort of the backyard is a fitting idea. There are several decorations you can include in the party space to make the area especially festive in a way that showcases the guest of honor's interests and sense of style. Does this Spark an idea?

Centerpieces

Accent the tables for the outdoor celebration with floral centerpieces that coordinate with the guest of honor's sense of style. For instance, if your best friend loves the color yellow, clear glass vases or pitchers filled with yellow roses and tulips will give the tables a bright and refreshing feel, especially when paired with a classic white tablecloth. If your loved one prefers nonfloral decor, shallow dishes filled with colored stones and surrounded with synthetic moss or leaves add nature-inspired accents to the tablescape. A potpourri dish filled with items that are indicative of the season is appropriate for an outdoor party as well. For instance, dried apples, cinnamon oil and pine cones are ideal for a fall celebration. As you lead the blindfolded guest of honor to the table, she will be able to smell the decorations you've prepared for her surprise party before you remove the blindfold to reveal the adorned table and all her guests.

Chair Accents

If you're using metal or plastic folding chairs for the surprise party, accent the chair where the guest of honor will sit by spray-painting it with one of the party decor colors. Place a wide strip of tulle around the back of the chair and tie it into a large bow to make the main chair especially festive; lightly mist the tulle bow with spray glitter. Purchase seat cushions that match the party hues, and place them in the seats of the party chairs. Choose a pattern for the seat cushions that fits the party's theme, such as a tropical floral pattern for a surprise luau or gingham pillows for a country-style outdoor barbecue. Use a cloth that matches the seat cushions to cover the food and presents on the table so you can unveil the surprise after leading the guest of honor to the backyard.

Lighting

For a surprise outdoor party that takes place in the evening, choose simple candle arrangements that add attractive lighting to the table decor. Once you've gathered all the guests in the backyard to prepare to greet the guest of honor, light candles housed in mason jars on the table to accent the classic picnic party decor. Or place paper lantern floor lamps at each corner of the table to add dim lighting that will make the streamers and confetti on the party table more noticeable. For an elegant, tea party-style event, pastel-colored floating candles in shallow vases filled with water are fitting. The lighting will showcase some of the homemade treats you've prepared for your loved one, as well as small framed pictures of the person you are celebrating, such as baby pictures for a birthday party, or school photos from younger years for a graduation celebration.

Additional Accents

Choose serving dishes in vivid colors that further emphasize the party's theme. For instance, cherry-red and burnt orange ceramic bowls and casserole dishes are appropriate for a fiesta-style outdoor celebration, and will bring out the shades of yellow or green in the tablecloth, table runner and vases filled with bright red poppies or daisies. If you're using picnic tables for the outdoor surprise event, dress them up with tulle or cotton table skirts. Use a strip of the same fabric to cover the guest of honor's eyes as you lead her to the party space.
