Cute Homemade Halloween Costumes

Instead of running out to a store for a last-minute costume, create a cute one using items in your the home. Sometimes you can find items for a costume just by digging through old trunks or boxes in the attic. Craft storage bins also might contain objects that can be used to make a costume not only for children, but adults as well.

Tourist

Dress up as a tourist. Most men have a Hawaiian shirt hanging somewhere in the back of the closet or even in a bag set aside for a consignment sale. Wear a pair of white shorts or pants. Look around for large sun hats and colorful sunglasses. Girls can wear flowery dresses, sandals and a large straw hat. Throw a colorful beach or pool bag over your shoulder and strap a camera around your neck. Carry a few maps and place a thick coat of sunscreen underneath your eyes and on the bridge of your nose.

Scarecrow

Put on a flannel shirt, faded jeans, boots and an old leather belt to become a scarecrow. This cute Halloween costume is appropriate for all ages. Add a straw hat, place a bandanna around the collar of the shirt and stuff some pine straw in the pockets of the shirt and jeans. If you want the "lumpy" look, stuff the shirt with newspapers, socks or plastic bags. Plan ahead and iron on a few plaid patches on the knees of the blue jeans. Search the garage or garden shed for old work gloves that can be worn. Stick a few black feathers in the back of the straw hat.

Bag of Jelly Beans

Arrive at a party as a bag of jelly beans. Put on a pair of leotards or tights in any color and a matching top. Take a large clear lawn bag, cut two holes in the bottom for the legs and two holes on the side to allow the arms to poke through. Blow up several bags of small multicolored balloons. Be sure you have someone near by to help you fill the bag with balloons (jelly beans). Step into the bag and begin placing the balloons inside from the opening at the top. Fill the bag, making sure you can still move and walk around. Loosely tie the bag underneath the neck area or over the shoulders with colorful ribbon. Spell out Jelly Beans in cut-out letters and stick them to the front of the costume.

Bridal Shower Games For Kids

Inviting children to a bridal shower requires a little extra planning when it comes to games and activities. Many classic bridal shower games--like memory games and word games--are kid friendly, particularly if you stick to the G-rated versions. Here are a few ideas to get you thinking in a kid-friendly mode.

Memory Games

Memory games are popular at bridal showers, and they can be kid friendly as well. Ask the bride to excuse herself at some point during the shower, then give guests one to two minutes to figure out what she is--or isn't--wearing. Another variation is for the bride to model an apron with several attached objects or present a tray full of items, then leave the room after a couple of minutes. Guests then write down everything they remember being on her apron or tray.

These games work well for kids who are able to read and write. For smaller children, consider pairing an adult with each child to do the writing for the team.

Word Games

Provide pre-printed pages with various word games for adults and children alike. Scramble various wedding-related words such as "cake", "reception" or "flowers" and give guests a time limit to unscramble them. Or create a word search with words related to weddings or to the couple, such as their wedding date, names, wedding theme or color.

Wedding Bingo is another game children can participate in, particularly if you use Bingo cards with pictures. Each card consists of various gifts that are typically received at bridal showers. When the bride opens a gift on your card, you mark it off until one of the guests achieves a Bingo.

Also consider giving each guest a bracelet, necklace or pin upon arriving. Anytime a guest says "bride," "wedding" or the name of the bride or groom, someone else can take the pin. Whoever has the most pins at the end of the party wins a prize. Stickers would also work well for children.

Other Ideas

A good way to involve both the adults and children is to divide guests into teams featuring a combination of each age group. Send each team on a scavenger hunt for specific items you hide before the shower. Teams can also have water balloon or egg tossing contests. That isn't relevant to the shower at all, but may prove to be fun for adults and children alike.

Play "who knows the bride best" and watch how much the kids actually know, possibly from eavesdropping. Games pertaining to celebrity couples or TV couples may entertain children as well. Provide simple crafts or coloring pages portraying weddings for younger children, and tailor special favors towards children if there are quite a few attending.

And be sure to treat the bride and groom's children to an extra prize, gift or treat no matter how small, so they don't feel lost in the shuffle.

Helpful Tips

It is a good idea to keep prizes on hand for adults and children alike; while grown-up guests may enjoy scented candles, children probably prefer candy. Also, dictate one adult winner and one underage winner for each game, to keep the competition even.

Finally, if you have a lot of children attending, be sure to have kid-only games available for them to play.

16th Birthday Cake Ideas For Boys

There are many approaches to decorating a birthday cake.

A boy's 16th birthday is a pretty big deal for him. From getting a part-time job to getting a driver's license, most teens look intensely forward to turning 16. When developing a design for a 16th birthday cake for a boy, think about his favorite hobbies and interests to give you a clue to the type of design that he would most like. Does this Spark an idea?

Movie/Video Game Themed

Most teens have a slew of favorite movies they enjoy watching with friends. Likewise, you would be hard pressed to find a 16-year-old boy who doesn't own a Game Boy, Wii or other video game system. An excellent way to get a movie/video image onto a birthday cake is to take an image into a cake shop that has a machine that can print an edible photo design directly onto the cake. Alternatively, if you are an experienced cake decorator you can use a photo as a guide to duplicate the design in a rougher form.

Sports Themed

Whether your teen is a baseball fan or enjoys watching NASCAR, an excellent approach for a birthday cake is to create a design that both represents the sport and the number 16. For instance, for the baseball fan, a player hitting a home run wearing the number 16 on his uniform or 16 players on the field is an excellent way of signifying his 16th birthday. For a NASCAR-themed cake, a race car numbered 16 with driver inside is ideal.

Favorite Hobbies/Interests

Draw inspiration for your boy's 16th birthday cake design by looking at his hobbies and interests. For example, if your teen plays a mean guitar, create (or order) a cake design with a boy rocking out as he plays. Add a 16 to a t-shirt the guitarist is wearing in your design. If your teen is an avid surfer, try a photo of him on the beach with a surfboard in hand, along with 16 surfboards, each numbered, framing the image. Again, select a cake designer that has equipment that can transform your photo into a cake decoration.

Foods For A Children'S Birthday Party

By bucking the tradition of serving cake and ice cream, you can make your children's birthday party reflect their personal tastes and favorites items. Take a creative approach to the menu. Kids will talk for days about unusual appetizers and desserts. Show your child how much you care by serving inventive food at the party. Does this Spark an idea?

Appetizers

Ask your child to make a list of her favorite meals. Many of her choices can be turned into handheld appetizers. Does she love peanut butter and jelly? Spin a twist on this old classic by cutting up the sandwiches into 1-by-1-inch pieces, leaving off the crusts. Thread small skewers with sandwich and banana. Instead of the usual hamburgers, go the trendy route and make sliders. Sliders are mini hamburgers that can be filled with ground turkey or chicken---easy to hold and different from the norm. You can even arrange them on the plate to resemble your child's most loved animal. Cut some through the middle and assemble. Use olives for eyes, pickles for ears, and pimentos for a nose. Is there a particular cuisine your child enjoys? You can reinvent some of there favorites and make dishes like egg roll s'mores. Take each egg roll wrapper and roll over marshmallow fluff with chocolate. Wet the edges so that it will stick and fry. You'll have a tasty treat that plays off Chinese cuisine.

Entrees

Is your child's birthday around a holiday? Holiday-themed birthday parties offer a whole host of entree possibilities. Even if Halloween is months away, why not celebrate it anyway? A great spooky dish can be made with a fiesta flare. Prepare tacos and top with sour cream; then construct decorative spiders from olives. Make one whole olive the body and slice olives for legs. Give your spider some friends by using guacamole caterpillars with cherry tomatoes for heads. Bring in your child's heritage as a theme: Many entrees can be specially personalized to represent your family's background. Mini pizzas are great kid entrees, and you can have more fun by making them into shapes. Roll out dough and use large cookie cutters. Coat each pizza with a small amount of sauce and cheese. The kids can help decorate the pizzas with savory toppings like olives, peperoni, sausage, green onion, and pineapple.

Dessert

While cake and ice cream are always the true stars of the birthday, this ending can be made even more exciting with "mice" ice cream cookies. To make them, use one large cookie of your child's choosing and top with his favorite ice cream. For the ears, use two smaller cookies standing up. Make eyes with chocolate chips and whiskers with small pretzel sticks. Cupcakes are delightful and children often love having their own sweet treat. Prepare the cakes with the child's favorite flavor and icing. In frosting, write one letter of his name on each cupcake, then line them up. Use some cupcakes for candles. You'll have a deconstructed birthday cake that everyone will enjoy. For the kids who aren't fans of cake, cookie cakes are a great replacement. By using one huge cookie, you give yourself plenty of room to be able to decorate. Use icing to draw their favorite sports, movie characters, or people. If you're not an artist, purchase ready-made decorations for cakes and cookies at a hobby store. Taking a unique, thoughtful approach to your child's birthday will help him or her feel special and give party goers something to remember.

Cheap Things To Do In Oahu Hawaii

Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head

Hawaii is a land of warm tropical waters caressing sun-washed beaches, of a historic past that begs exploring and of a gregarious people with a penchant for music and dance. Oahu is the most populated Hawaiian island and the home of the state capital, Honolulu. There are mega-resorts in Waikiki and around the island and luaus and excursions that are well worth the money spent, but there are also parts of Oahu that can be experienced for little or no cash at all.

Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head

Waikiki Beach

Waikiki Beach Fun

In Hawaii the beaches belong to everyone, including those beaches that front the nonstop party zone known as Waikiki. Sun, sand and the ocean are free. Grab your beach gear, stop in at one of the "one on every block almost" ABC stores for drinks and a picnic lunch and spend the day enjoying yourself on one of the most famous beaches in the world. If your day at the beach dips into the evening hours, you will be in the perfect spot for watching a colorful Hawaiian sunset.

Hiking Diamond Head

View From the Top of Diamond Head

On the eastern end of Waikiki Beach sits the dormant volcano Diamond Head. This long time icon of Waikiki got its name from British sailors in the 1800s who took the calcite crystals in the soil for diamonds. If you want to see Waikiki from a different perspective, take the .6 mile hike up the side of Diamond Head. Accessed from a drive-through tunnel, Diamond Head State Monument has restrooms, vending machines and information pamphlets at the base parking lot area. Mobile lunch wagons also service the area. The real draw is the hike up the volcano's side on a marked trail, part paved, part natural turf and part stairs. Sections of it are steep, but the view at the top tends to make you forget the 99 steps on that last leg. All of Waikiki and the Pacific Ocean lie beneath your feet.

Arizona Memorial National Monument

List of the Fallen, Arizona Memorial

A visit to Oahu is incomplete without seeing Pearl Harbor. Located 13 miles west of Waikiki, the Arizona Memorial National Monument is dedicated to those who lost their lives in the Dec.r 7, 1941 attack of Pearl Harbor. The memorial straddles the Battleship Arizona, which still serves as a tomb for many of the soldiers who went down with her. Droplets of oil still rise from her hull. The tour begins with a movie showing actual footage of the Japanese attack. After that a Navy launch takes visitors to board the memorial. There is no cost for the tour or for touring the USS Bowfin submarine just next door. A cable car-style shuttle, playing music from the 1940s, is available to ride over to Ford Island to see the USS Missouri, also called the "Mighty Mo." This ship is where the Japanese surrendered to the United States. As of 2009, the general admission fee for adults is $16 and for children $8.

Hike the Pali Lookout Trail

Pali Lookout

Head west on Highway 1 to the Pali Highway toward Windward Oahu and follow the signs to the Pali Lookout. Park in the lot and walk out to the edge of one of the most scenic and windiest spots on Oahu. From this vantage point the Koolau Mountains and all of Windward Oahu are panoramically laid at your feet. Local legend has it that King Kamehameha conquered Oahu by driving its army over this very cliff. There is a little-known trail at the base of the lookout that follows the old Pali Highway. Its paved pathway winds through island greenery offering new views around every turn. There is no cost at all for this outdoor adventure.

North Shore

Island Surfers

North Shore, Oahu is best known for winter waves the size of skyscrapers and surfers crazy enough to take them on. If you are on Oahu during the winter months, driving up to the North Shore to see these monster waves is an adventure in itself. Unless you are an expert surfer, don't even think about doing anything but watching. In the summer months, the swells mellow and the Waimea Bay Beach Park becomes an inviting stretch of sand with safely swimmable waters that is popular with kids of all ages. The park offer restrooms and picnic areas. Bringing your own drinks and snacks is the least expensive way to go, but save a few dollars for a shave ice at Matusmoto's Store. Located just 2.5 miles from Waimea Bay Beach Park, this general store has been serving this island style snow cone since 1951.

About ABC Stores

Shopping in Waikiki

It is almost impossible to walk more than a block or two in Waikiki without running into an ABC Store with its traditional blue sign and white lettering. These discount stores make it easy to pick up a quick picnic lunch or snack for your day at the beach or jaunt around the island. They also offer island souvenirs including macadamia nuts, with or without the chocolate, and Kona coffee. Beach mats, beach towels, personal care items, it's all there at reasonable prices. The ABC store also sells the 4-Day Visitor Bus Pass for the island's transportation service. "The Bus" is the least expensive way to get around the island. As of 2009 the 4-Day Visitor Pass sells for $25 and allows unlimited rides for that period.

Birthday Parties For Kids With Water

Parents of children with summer birthdays know that an entertaining way to keep the birthday boy or girl and the party guests cool is to throw a water party. Birthday parties for kids with water can range from a traditional pool party to simpler backyard water fun, but any type of water party will help make the outdoors an enjoyable setting for an action-packed summer birthday party. Does this Spark an idea?

Pool Party

Perhaps the most obvious of the options for birthday parties for kids with water, pool parties are ideal for those with pools at their home or who have a nearby community pool. Children of all ages will enjoy splashing around, swimming, racing and playing pool games like Marco Polo and water volleyball. When sending invitations, parents should remind guests to bring swimsuits, towels and safety gear such as life jackets or floaties. Parents should be sure there are enough adults to supervise the swimming.

Backyard Fun

Those without access to a pool can create simple backyard water fun. This type of party could include different types of water activities such as a baby pool, water balloons, Slip 'n Slide, water guns and sprinklers. Set up stations and allow children to move freely during the party. Backyard water fun is an ideal choice for young children not yet able to swim in full-size pools.

Beach Party

Boys and girls who live close to a coast can use the beach for a party. Birthday parties at the beach are usually all-day affairs, as the drive to and from the beach and setup can take time. Because beach parties can be taxing on parents, they also tend to be limited in size to just close friends of the celebrant. Beach parks with covered areas and grills allow parents to cook lunch and have a place to serve the food, but bringing a picnic lunch or snack in a cooler also is acceptable. Activities for a beach party include beach volleyball, making sand castles, surfing and boogie boarding.

Water Games

Older kids who are past playing in the sprinkler and splashing in baby pools still can be entertained in the backyard or at a park. Especially ideal for a birthday boy or girl who loves athletics and competition, a party with stations of different water games allows kids to expend energy and get exercise outside even during the summer heat. Games for this type of party might include water relay races, tug of war over a sprinkler, a water balloon toss and a wet sponge toss.

Country Wedding Decoration Ideas

Country Wedding with Cowboy Hats

Planning a country-themed wedding allows for many decoration options. Depending on the time of the year and the location of the wedding, outdoor decor can compliment the theme nicely. If hosting the event indoors, implement the theme through little touches of decor and attire. Since many country weddings are nontraditional in nature, nonconformity, originality and simplicity dominate this theme.

Outdoor Decor and Location

A country wedding is best planned outdoors where the colors and the dirt combine for a nice backdrop. Horses are sometimes used by the wedding party and the bride to walk down the "aisle." This creates a dramatic effect and brings together the essence of a country or western wedding. Incorporating props such as wagon buggies and rope make the theme come alive. Choose an outdoor setting that is surrounded by tall trees or a wide meadow that will let the sun light and dazzle the setting. Simple spaces go well with a country theme when life was lived in simpler terms. Choose clean, plain cotton fabrics rather than satin to play up simplicity.

Indoor Decor Ideas

Using wedding items such as a guest book and cake toppers with a country twist can add simple touches to indicate the theme is a country wedding. Many wedding vendors manufacture country-themed wedding toasters, favors and cake carvers, and they can be purchased together in packages. A great way to add personality to a country wedding is through the cake design. Consider adding elements that indicate the rustic charm so often associated with country weddings. Color can go a long way in weddings, and for country weddings keep the colors light and neutral. Favor Ideas suggests starting "with a palette of earthy tones: yellows and golds, tans and umbers, sage and russet, celadon and cinnamon. Then, try building the theme around your favorite rustic flower (like sunflowers, black-eyed susans or daisies) or a carefree member of the insect world, such as bees, butterflies or dragonflies."

Dress and Attire

The attire of a wedding serves as decor since the wedding party lines up in the front. It, therefore, must match its surroundings in a cohesive way. Western and country weddings often included the use of a cowboy hat and/or boots. Shorter dresses and off the shoulder necklines are also common. The bride's dress is often the centerpiece of the ceremony and can be elaborate with lots of lace and frills. Since the country wedding is nontraditional, however, the bride may choose to go with a very simple dress to match her surroundings and the overall mood.

Girls 14th Birthday Party Ideas

A makeover party is just one option for a 14th birthday party.

Turning 14 is a big turning point for your daughter. She's most likely in high school by now (or will be beginning it soon) and is well into her teenage years. However, though she might think that she's too old now for a birthday party, she'll still love being the center of attention for a day. Still, you have to make sure that the theme of her party is age-appropriate and will be a hit with her guests--teenage girls are notoriously hard to please. Explore a few theme options with your daughter and figure out what she wants before proceeding. That way, you can help her plan the party of her dreams. Does this Spark an idea?

Makeover Birthday Party

Teenage girls love giving and getting makeovers, and having a makeover-themed birthday party is a great way to celebrate this. Start by picking up the most recent teen magazines to give your daughter and her friends inspiration. You can pick out some temporary hair color (something that washes right out is the best bet), inexpensive makeup and hair products from the local drugstore. There are plenty of makeover movies as well to help get the girls in the right mood. "The Princess Diaries," "Cinderella" or "She's All That" are great choices to show the turnaround from ugly duckling to beautiful young girl.

Fortune Party

Planning your future is an important part of being a teenager. Let your daughter and her friends have fun with fortune-telling at her 14th birthday party. You can find horoscopes in teen magazines, letting them tell their futures by star sign. Ouija boards are also a lot of fun--if a little spooky--for girls this age. Games like making a paper fortune-teller (fold a paper into fourths, with fortunes written on the inside flap) are also a great way of "predicting" the future. To top it off, buy a box of Chinese fortune cookies for the end of the evening.

Gossip Girl Birthday Party

Celebrate your daughter's 14th birthday with one of her favorite TV shows--"Gossip Girl." Make it an Upper East Side birthday with fake cocktails, like Shirley Temples, in martini glasses. Buy copies of Vogue for the girls to read and pore through. Top off the evening with a screening of "Breakfast at Tiffany's," the classic New York film (not to mention Blair Waldorf's favorite!).

Fun Stuff To Do With No Money

While spending money can grant you entrance into exciting places and allow you to purchase cool items, wealth alone can't guarantee happiness. Fun exists when you let your creativity and inner-child override your inhibitions. Whether seeking fun stuff to do with no money arises from necessity, or from just being budget-conscious, keeping an open mind is essential. With a little patience and resourcefulness, you can engage in fun activities without spending any money. Does this Spark an idea?

Solitary Fun

Traveling through different natural settings can be a fun way to unwind without spending money. For example, walking or riding your bicycle to nearby public beaches and parks can increase your exposure to and awareness of nature. Collecting rocks, leaves or seashells along your journeys can help you commemorate your adventures. Consider creating mounted collections to display your resourcefulness. Use library resources to help you identify and label your findings.

Stargazing on a clear night can fuel creative thoughts and even inspire an interest in astrology or astronomy. Grab a lawn chair and head to your rooftop patio or any ground-level clearing. Watch as the stars paint different pictures on their travel through the night sky. Identify constellations and planetary movements, by referencing applicable public library books. Take a flashlight and journal with you to capture your imaginative feelings on paper.

Shared Fun

Hosting a fashion show using clothes out of your own closet can be a fun way to spend downtime. Create different categories such as "retro" and "sci-fi" to add flair to your usual pairings. Choose coordinating hairstyles and accessories to complete your different looks. Consider inviting friends over to serve as fashion show judges or active participants.

Visiting your local recreation center can provide access to free games and activities. Joining with others in a pick-up basketball or football game can relieve stress and introduce you to new people. Keep track of free events including concerts and parades. Attending free art classes, book clubs or seminars is another way to access money-free fun.

Gathering friends for old-fashioned game playing can provide hours of free fun. "Retro" games such as charades and truth-or-dare don't require game pieces or electricity. Taking a midnight stroll through a dark cemetery while telling ghost stories can provide ghoulish excitement. Holding a neighborhood field day complete with foot races can bring out competitive spirit without the burden of spending money.

Dressup Party Ideas For 18th Birthdays

The 18th birthday marks a milestone event in the life of a teenager, symbolizing his or her journey into adulthood. Teens are legally able to vote and often are moving from high school to college and beyond. Dress-up party ideas for the 18th birthday make the birthday memorable. Stick to a specific theme and ask guests to dress up in costumes relating to the theme. Does this Spark an idea?

Toga Party

A toga party is one of the simplest dress-up ideas for an 18th birthday, because the basic costume only needs a white sheet. Drape the sheet around the body and wrap around one shoulder, tying at the top. Ask the teens to be inventive and use different methods to make their togas. For example, one teen may opt to turn a sheet into a short dress, with a halter top that ties around the neck. Encourage the teens to dress up their costumes with extra accessories, including jewelry.

Masquerade Ball

In a masquerade ball, all the guests wear costumes that obscure their face and no one knows who the other guests are until they pull off their masks. Host an elaborate masquerade ball and ask guests to come dressed in semiformal attire and bring their own masks. Hold contests for the teens, letting the guests pick their favorite costumes and favorite masks. For a twist on the idea, ask the teens to wear costumes to the event and let them make their own masks on site. Set out plain masks, glitter, beads, feathers and glue to attach the decorations to the masks.

Hollywood Glamor

Throw a Hollywood Glamor 18th birthday party with a classic Hollywood theme. Ask guests to come dressed as their favorite Hollywood star from another era, such as James Dean, Humphrey Bogart, Marilyn Monroe or Lauren Bacall. Decorate the room in shades of black, white and silver. Use a few red accents around the room, including a red carpet that each guest must walk to enter the birthday party.

Out and About

Treat the teen and friends to a night on the town. Arrange for a trip to a fancy restaurant and a nightclub for the teens. Instead of wearing costumes, the teens dress in their favorite elegant attire for the night on the town. You can even rent a popular nightclub or hot spot in town and treat the teens to a night of dancing and alcohol-free drinks.

Food Ideas For A Bridal Shower Party

Finger foods are delicious and inexpensive for parties.

When planning the menu of your bridal shower, keep in mind the company who will be in attendance. Is anyone with allergies going to be there? Will there be any vegetarians? Plan according to what people will eat. Bridal showers are known for mini finger-sandwiches and snacks; however, if mini food isn't your thing, don't be afraid to serve a nice roast. Don't tailor your shower to what you think it should be---tailor it to what you like. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Dips

Dips are fun and classy when they're not associated with potato chips. Serve several different dips, such as crab, tuna, spinach, artichoke, pepper, ranch, onion, dill, guacamole or hummus. Make sure the various dips offer different consistencies, to keep your selection fresh. Serve with vegetables as well as with whole wheat, butter, herb and cheese crackers. You might also serve baked slices of pita bread.

Soups

While soups may not be the first dish thought of for a bridal shower, small portions and attractive "packaging" will endear your guests to the idea. Serve fun or seasonal soups, such as pumpkin, broccoli, beet or classic chicken noodle, in dainty teacups for a unique presentation.

Drinks

For those not partaking in alcoholic beverages, serve fun mocktails like ginger ale and cherry juice together for a cherry fizz, a mint iced tea or a classic Shirley Temple. The website All Recipes has a long list of fabulous mocktails. For those getting their bubbly on, serve mimosas, mojitos, fruity margaritas or flavored iced tea mixed with vodka. Always have water available, as well.

Salads

Serve a fresh garden or Cobb salad with three different dressings set out in serving cups or gravy bowls. Serve a thicker dressing like ranch or Caesar along with a more fluid one like balsamic or sun dried tomato. For the last bowl, use a fruity, low-fat dressing such as raspberry-vinaigrette. Fruit salad is another option. Toss three or four of your favorite fruits in a bowl and serve them alone or with a vanilla or cream-cheese dip. You might also consider macaroni, coleslaw and potato salads.

Finger-Foods

Finger sandwiches are a common bridal-shower find. Think salad when planning the menu for your sandwiches: chicken salad, tuna salad, egg salad. Cucumber sandwiches are another option. Stuffed mushroom caps and bite-sized quiche are also appropriate.

Dessert

It's hard to go wrong when choosing a dessert. Bite-sized cheesecakes and brownies, chocolate-covered fruits, vanilla cupcakes, tiramisu, trifles and dessert gelatins would all be appropriate choices for a bridal shower. If you enjoy cake, you might also serve a small wedding cake.

Cheap Sweet Sixteen Ideas

With the right venue, you can have a great party at little cost.

Sweet 16 parties are often glamorized by television specials which show elaborate celebrations complete with a professional DJ, massive rented space, catered meals and limousines. Fortunately, you don't need to break the bank to have a special sweet 16 party. Many ideas can be pulled off with a minimum of funds, especially when you focus your money on a single aspect of the event and save with frugal details.

Outdoor Ball

Instead of renting and decorating an elaborate hall, cut the costs of this type of party by holding a ball outdoors. Time the festivities for evening when you can use paper lanterns, candles and white Christmas lights to create an enchanting atmosphere. A temporary dance floor can be constructed from plywood or you can simply let the guests dance on the grass. Use the porch as a stage and set up either a sound system for recorded music to play on, or let local teenage bands play. Encourage guests to dress in their finest, and the atmosphere created by the elegant attire alone will make the event seem more formal. You can even make it a masked ball by requiring everyone to keep their face covered until the great unveiling as a designated hour.

Movie Screening

Many movie theaters will allow you to rent a single theater for a private screening. Once you have covered the cost of the theater, you will have very little additional expense. The movie itself will keep the guests busy throughout the event. For a nice additional touch, you can fill up small bags with candy purchased in bulk to provide a snack for the film.

Pool Party

The mere presence of a pool makes any party seem more glamorous. If you don't have access to a backyard pool, look into renting a neighborhood pool for your private event. Simple snacks such as fruit trays and mock cocktails will keep the party goers satisfied. With sunning and swimming available, you won't need to provide additional entertainment.

Dinner Party

An elegant dinner party is a very affordable way to make a sweet 16 memorable. Enlist siblings or parents to act as cooks and servers for the evening. Encourage guests to dress up in formal gowns and suits. Have a cocktail hour with nonalcoholic beverages and appetizers, followed by a nice, three-course meal. If the food is prepared at home from scratch and the guest list is kept to close friends, this can be a very affordable party. Serve a simple salad for the first course followed by a chicken and rice for a main course and cake or brownie sundaes for dessert.

Activities That Can Be Done At A Retirement Dinner

Activities That Can Be Done at a Retirement Dinner

Being the ringleader to bid adieu a recent retiree can seem like a daunting task. Often it includes entertaining a diverse group of supporters who are sending off the guest of honor. However, long speeches and never-ending monotonous toasts do not have to be the only option to sending your featured guest off in style.

Roasts

Roasts are creative alternatives to standard toasts and are comedic ways to highlight memories of the guest of honor told through true and untrue stories. This party activity is best used on retirees who have a sense of humor and for roastees who know keep the jokes entertaining rather than offensive. Usually they know the retiree best and would be selected to tell funny anecdotes with a well wishing to follow. This comedy-meets-dinner theory isn't a new one; roasts and its type of showcase date back to the legendary Friar's Club in the early 1900s. By1966, Frank Sinatra's roast was featured on the Dean Martin Show. Examples of performance styles can be found on popular comedy networks such as Comedy Central. Hugh Heffner, Chevy Chase and Joan Rivers are all famous entertainers who have been saluted on air using this format.

Slide-Show Presentations

With the use of technology, retirees can be recognized through a slide-show presentation that combines photos, old sayings and quotes to reflect memorable moments. Some creative presentations include voice-over narration, mock business presentations or read-aloud with background music re-creating the nostalgia. Slide shows can be presented by a group or used as a stand-alone rolling video serving as a backdrop at the event. Presentations are great ways to showcase the history of the guest as it relates to her family, work and extracurricular activities.

Theme Dinner Parties

Staging a theme such as a casino game night, bon voyage or old Hollywood can set the tone for the overall program of the night. Subsequent activities can be planned to match the style of the event. Old Hollywood could include entertaining guests with a live jazz band or having the DJ preselect songs and guests can guess lyrical snippets from the era of the retiree. Other creative dinner activities are trivia games, identifying commonalities between the guests and the guest of honor (how many people were born on the same day) or playing "remember when." Generally, as long as the activities involve all guests but feature the guest of honor, themed events can be useful in planning a great retirement gala.

Birthday Word Games

Word games make a nice addition to a birthday party.

Putting together some games for a birthday party can keep your guests engaged, excited and having fun. There are a number of ways to incorporate the birthday theme into word games, which can be played indoors if you don't have much space or if it is a rainy day outside.

Initial Games

Pass out papers to the guest of the party and try out a word game inspired by the name of the birthday girl or boy. Give guests 60 seconds to write down as many words as they can think of that begin with the first initial of the birthday person's name. After the time is up, count up the words to see who came up with the most.

Mad Libs

Mad Libs is a common game that can be crafted for a birthday party. Write out a paragraph on a large piece of poster board, leaving certain words blank, like: The birthday ______ was at the ______ and everyone brought _______. Guests can then fill in the blanks to make wild and crazy stories.

Storytelling

A storytelling game can be played indoors at a birthday party with little preparation. Have players sit in a circle, with one guest starting the game off by saying a word, like "the." The next player says another word, trying to continue the sentence. The trick is to get players contributing words quickly to make one seamless story.

Telephone

The game of Telephone, in which a line of people whisper a message to one another, can be tweaked into a birthday word game. Have guests sit in a line, and have the person at the end of the line "write" a word on to the palm of the person next to him using his fingers. Instruct players to "write" words relating to birthdays, like cake or present. Guests continue down the line, writing the word they felt traced on their own hand on to the palm of the next person.

About Ancient Hawaiian Weddings

Today's weddings use many traditions from ancient Hawaiian weddings.

Many of the elements of modern Hawaiian weddings still include customs and symbols from Hawaii’s ancient past such as flower leis, hula dancing, food and ceremonial rituals. Like many other cultures, the Hawaiian wedding ceremony includes traditions that signify respect for the bride and groom, their families and the history of the Hawaiian people.

Flower Lei

In Hawaiian culture, the lei is a traditional arrangement of flowers typically worn around the neck or head and given to someone in celebration of a special occasion or to symbolize their affection. In a traditional Hawaiian wedding ceremony, the groom wears a lei that typically consists of maile leaves interwoven with pikake (white jasmine) or tuberose flowers, while the bride wears a three-strand white pikake lei, a tuberose lei or white ginger lei. Both leis can use other flowers, including orchids, plumeria, rosebuds and ti leaves.

Ceremonial Symbols

The opening of the wedding event begins with the blowing of the pu (conch shell) to the east, north, west and south, which signifies a call to the divine presence. The bride and groom exchange leis at the beginning of the ceremony to signify their love and commitment. A kahuna pule (religious man) officiates the wedding nuptials and uses a maile leaf to bind the hands of the bride and groom to symbolize the sacred union.

Length of Ceremony

In ancient times, only the chiefly Hawaiian class followed the Hawaiian wedding ritual of the Ho’ao. Ho’ao means to "stay until daylight." The ceremony would take place on the Huna (eleventh night of the month). After the wedding nuptials took place, the festivities began and continued until the next day.

Hula

The Hawaiian hula is an ancient and sacred form of dance that takes place during various types of rituals and ceremonies, as well as to express feelings or to convey a story. In traditional Hawaiian wedding ceremonies, the chosen type of hula would tell a meaningful story of the couple through song and dance. By contrast, many modern Hawaiian weddings include hula dancing as a form of entertainment.

Food

After the wedding ceremony, a luau (Hawaiian feast) takes place. The luau typically includes a banquet of traditional Hawaiian foods such as kalua pig (a whole pig slow roasted in an underground oven), poi (a taro root paste), kulolo (a coconut and taro pudding), lau lau (salted pork, beef or fish wrapped in ti leaves), poke (seasoned raw fish mixed with seaweed), tropical fruit and other meat, poultry or seafood dishes.

Birthday Invitations For Kids

Card stock works well for homemade invitations.

A birthday party is a big deal for most kids. Customizing the party makes the birthday child feel even more special on her day. Preprinted invitations from the party supply store lack personality and pizazz, but homemade invitations stand out and make your guests take notice. Match the invitations to the theme and color scheme of the party for a cohesive look. Does this Spark an idea?

Types

A card-style invitation made from card stock make a suitable birthday invitation base, and it can be mailed without extra postage. Printable invitations that you can customize online also produce an invitation that is easy to mail. For a more creative invitation, a 3-D object is an alternative. For example, write the party details on a miniature soccer ball for a sports-themed party. For an airplane theme, use paper airplanes as the invitations.

Design Ideas

If you go with a flat card stock invitation, add a custom look by cutting the paper into a shape related to the theme. For example, cut the card stock to look like a car, castle, monkey or fire truck depending on the theme. Let your child add the decorative details to the invitations to give him more ownership in the invitation process.

Another way to personalize invitations is to include a picture of your child. Incorporate his picture into the themed design if possible. If the invitation is shaped like a fire truck, take your child's picture while he's wearing a firefighter hat. Attach the picture in the cab of the fire truck to make it look like your child is driving the truck.

Wording

The invitation wording is best when you keep it short and sweet. The recipients wants to see the details at a glance so they knows the significant information. Highlight the date, time and location so the guests can plan to attend. Add in RSVP contact information for your benefit so you can plan for the appropriate number of guests. Add in any other details at the end of the invitations to give your guests any relevant information.

Tips

The timing of the invitations is a consideration when planning a child's birthday party. If you send them out too early, the guests might forget about the party by the time it rolls around. Send them out too late, and many of the recipients might already have plans. Aim for two to four weeks before the party. If you're making the invitations from scratch, allow plenty of time to assemble them to get them in the mail. Anything other than traditional flat invitations will cost you extra money to send through the postal system. If you're considering a 3-D invitation, consider hand delivering them.

Christmas gifts for mom don't have to be expensive.

Your mom is an important part of your life and Christmas is a great time to express this. Finding the perfect gift for your mom can be done on any budget. Give a gift that will reflect how much you love and appreciate her.

A Gift Basket

Make your mom a Christmas gift basket and fill it with things she loves. Add some red and green tissue paper and have fun filling it. A few inexpensive ideas include, a favorite candle, picture frame, her favorite nail polish, sock slippers, her favorite body lotion, chocolates. Perhaps your mom is a coffee lover. Adult Beach Birthday Ideas

Daiquiris are a refreshing beverage for an adult beach party.

Selecting a beach theme helps bring out the sun and fun at an adult birthday party. A beach party is also relatively easy to throw together. You don't have to go with a single mini-theme; you can pick what you like from luau, beach blanket and pool party inspirations. As long as you select suitable entertainment, decorations and refreshments, your beach party is likely to be a success. Does this Spark an idea?

Decorations

If you're lucky enough to throw a birthday party on the beach, you don't need much more than tiki torches to line pathways, tables for food and blankets for sitting. Bring the beach to your backyard with tiki print tablecloths over each table and tiki torches around the yard. Hang colorful plastic fish and seashell decorations from fences and posts. Fill kiddy pools with sand and seashells to decorate any empty corners. Cover the back of each chair with a bright beach towel to add a splash of color. Fill buckets with sand, seashells and plastic shovels to create simple beach centerpieces for each table at the birthday party. Fill glass fishbowls with seashells and blue-tinted water to create elegant centerpieces. Tie a bouquet of colorful fish-shaped balloons to a heavy seashell to create a cheerful centerpiece for each table.

Refreshments

Stick with chilled drinks to help keep guests cool if you're throwing a beach-themed party outdoors. Offer a selection of non-alcoholic drinks, such as lemonade, iced tea, water and soda to keep guests hydrated. Offer a selection of alcoholic drinks, such as blended margaritas, pina coladas, fruity daiquiris, hard lemonade and beer. Light snack selections for the beach birthday party include tropical fruit salad, shrimp cocktail, coleslaw, chips with dip, veggies with dip and snow cones. Filling snack selections include potato salad, burgers, hot dogs, roast ham, barbecue and teriyaki chicken kabobs. Dessert selections include pineapple upside-down cake, coconut cupcakes and a beach ball shaped birthday cake.

Entertainment

Play beach or luau themed music during a beach birthday party to get guests dancing. Use the music to hold a limbo contest, hula dancing contest and hula hooping contest. Play beach volleyball if you're at the beach, or play water balloon volleyball to keep guests cool in your backyard. Break guests into teams for a crabwalk race, beach ball soccer or buy 10 pineapples and a whole coconut for a game of beach bowling. Provide buckets and shovels for a sandcastle building contest right on the beach. Provide a large tub filled with sand, a water-filled bucket and plastic sandcastle building tools for a sandcastle building contest in your backyard. Supply watermelons and knives for a watermelon carving contest or give guests a chance to relax with a game of beach bingo.

Favors

Party favors can be a way to thank guests for attending, reward winning players in a game and solidify your overall party theme. Possible beach party favors include fish shaped votive candles, seashell shaped chocolates, saltwater taffy, colorful beach towels, starfish refrigerator magnets and novelty sunglasses.
