Guitar Player Gifts

Guitar-related gifts will please the shredder in your life.

Give a guitar player a gift that acknowledges his hobby or profession. Guitarists of all levels, from amateur to professional, will appreciate guitar-inspired items. If you are looking for a Christmas present, choose whimsical guitar-shaped decor that the musician can showcase throughout the year. Buy an item that the guitar player can use to conveniently store or carry his instrument. Customize the gifts to reflect the musician's favorite colors and additional hobbies.

Guitar Pick Jewelry

Delight a guitarist with customized jewelry made from authentic guitar picks. Choose a black guitar pick pendant embossed with an electric guitar design. Present the pendant on a sterling silver beaded chain, which can be worn by both men and women. Buy a pair of guitar pick earrings featuring handpainted designs such as flowers, astrological symbols or initials. Other music-inspired jewelry items include a guitar-shaped ring or enameled pendant.

Guitar-Shaped Christmas Ornament

Surprise a musician with a guitar-shaped Christmas ornament that celebrates her passion. Pick an authentic-looking wood ornament featuring intricate details. Choose an ornament fashioned after a famous Fender guitar. Guitar ornaments feature copper wire strings, volume and tone knobs and mini-pick guards. The ornaments are available in a variety of colors, such as red, blue, brown and black. Guitarists can display the charming ornaments during the holiday season or even year-round.

Guitar Wall Holder

A guitar wall holder will allow a musician to store and showcase his instrument at the same time. Choose an elegant wood holder for a classic look, or a metal holder featuring a specialty design such as a musical note. Metal guitar holders come in brass or a silver or gold-tone finish. The holders attach to walls with mounting screws. Look for a holder grip featuring a rubber cushion to protect the guitar's neck and head stock.

Guitar Wine Rack

If the guitarist is also a wine enthusiast, give him a gift that combines both interests. Choose guitar-shaped rack constructed of copper and steel for a modern look; look for a model featuring recycled steel as an eco-friendly touch. The wine racks, which feature realistic-looking strings, typically hold up to four bottles of wine. The rack will be a conversation starter in any room, from a den to a kitchen. Complete the gift with a few bottles of the recipient's favorite wine, or a selection from a local winery.

Free Lesson Plans On The Rainforest

Many interesting lesson plans related to the rainforests are available.

The rainforests are among the world's natural treasures, and there are many interesting ways of teaching students about them. Lessons can not only educate students about the rainforests, but they can also encourage students to think about how they can be preserved. Because of the beauty of the rainforests and the threats they face, lessons about the rainforests may make a powerful and lasting impression on a student.

Reading Lesson

A class can be given a specific rainforest to read about and then be asked questions about the information they have gleaned. The key questions they should be asked include the types of wildlife that live in the rainforest, the types of trees and plants that grow in the rainforest, the rainforest's size, and how healthy the rainforest is. The latter observation should include the impact on a particular rainforest by both natural forces and man.

Rainforest Structure

Rainforests are ecosystems that are teeming with life, from the forest floor right up to the rainforest's canopy. Teaching a class about what creatures and plants live at different levels of the rainforest would be another way of engaging students. Explain how living things thrive at different levels of the rainforest. Ask the students to write an essay on a creature and plant of their choice.

Rainforest Art

Give the class a creative lesson, whereby they can draw or paint the rainforest they have learned about. The artwork should include the creatures, plants and trees that occupy the rainforest. High marks should not only be given to a good piece of artwork but also for the number of living things accurately remembered as living in the rainforest.

The Importance of Rainforests

Teach the class about the major rainforests and how unique they are individually. Describe how the rainforests are beneficial to life on Earth and what would happen if all the rainforests disappeared. Ask the class how they feel about the importance of rainforests. They should be asked whether rainforests need protection, and, if so, how this can be achieved.

Budget Birthday Ideas

You can plan a fun birthday party on a budget.

Birthday parties are a way to celebrate the special day for the guest of honor. But planning a birthday party can be stressful if you are a budget. Once you get the invitations, decorations, food and party favors, your budget is gone. Knowing some budget-friendly birthday party ideas will help you keep inside your budget, remove some of the stress of the planning and still ensure the party is fun for all. Does this Spark an idea?

Invitations

The first area you can save some money in is the invitations. Instead of purchasing expensive themed invitations, consider using blank notecards. These are usually less expensive, and the leftovers can be used for other purposes. You can decorate the cards with stickers, markers or stamps that you have around the house. Or, you can make your own invitations using cardstock. Use cookie cutters to trace different shapes on the cardstock and then cut out. Whichever method you choose, write your party information on the invites before putting them in the envelope. To save a few more dollars, hand-deliver the invitations instead of mailing.

Decorations

Decorations help set the tone where the party will be held. When you visit your local party supply store, keep an open mind and look for clearance products. For example, in the fall and winter you can often find summer-themed supplies on sale, such as a luau or Fourth of July theme. Or, if you plan ahead, purchase party supplies after a holiday ends for the next year, such as Easter, Christmas or Thanksgiving. You can also make your own decorations. Posterboard can be cut into different shapes, such as stars or hearts, and then hung on the walls.

Food

Food can be one of the most expensive components of party planning. The first step in saving money on food is scheduling your party. Choose a time between meals, such as after breakfast but before lunch. This avoids having to feed your guests a full meal. When you choose the foods to serve, think of snacks that are inexpensive. Popcorn, chips and pretzels are usually available at reasonable prices. Mix powdered drink for party beverages--these are inexpensive and allow you stretch your dollar a little further. Instead of purchasing a cake or other desserts from a bakery, make your own using a mix, or employ a friend or family member to do it for you.

Party Favors

You can let your party favors save you money by making them work double duty. Choose activities for the guests that allow them to make their own crafts, which they can then take home. This saves you from having to buy supplies for both. You can make your own playdough using water, flour and cornstarch, and then allow the guests to make their own creations with the playdough. You can either bake the finished products and send them home or just let them squash the playdough back down and put it in a bag. Another idea is to give the guests supplies to make their own necklaces. Supply the yarn and beads, and allow your guests to make their own designs.

Gift Bag Ideas For Women

Gift bags go along way with guests.

Gift bags let your guest know that they are appreciated and that you are thankful that they are there for you. Making great gift bags for your guests does not have to be a stressful activity. Women are especially easy to shop for being as most love anything that is shiny, smells good, or is practical. Does this Spark an idea?

Cloth Bags

When handing out gift bags, the bag can be just as important as what is inside. The right bag can be a gift in itself. Buy fabric bags that can be used again. Stuff them with personalized trinkets such as towels with the guests initials embroidered on them.

A Spa Day

Wicker baskets filled with bath supplies is always a good gift. Find sample sizes of all your favorite scents and load them into each basket with an eye mask and an eye cooling lotion. Complete with a personalized wash cloth.

Themed Gift Bag

Maybe it is summer, maybe it is Christmas, either way a seasonally themed gift bag will go over well. For summer you can fill up tote bags with flip flops and beach supplies. For Christmas a stocking filled with ornaments, jewelry, and make-up will be a hit.

Date in a Bag

Women will love the opportunity to take their boyfriend or husband out for the night. Give gift certificates for a local restaurant along with movie tickets or a gift certificate for Netflix.

Beach Decor For Rooms

When incorporating beach-style decorating, choose colors such as blue, yellow and coral.

Beach-house living means easy living. If you're in the process of decorating a beach house, or decorating a room in the beach style, go for items that are low-maintenance. Does this Spark an idea?

Colors

According to Elle Decor, beach decor should include the blue of water and sky. It also, according to Cottage Home Decorating, should have accents indicative of the yellow-beige of the sand, as well as the pinks of coral.

Fabrics

Selecting outdoor-friendly fabric such as canvas is an excellent choice. It's easy to wipe sand off it, and it doesn't fade as quickly as other materials. Fabrics with striped and plaid patterns are most often selected in beach decor, but solids are popular as well.

Accessories

While some items, such as shells, are common in beach-themed decor, homeowners should also consider other beach-related items, particularly unusual ones such as antique glass, flotation devices, old fishing netting, ocean-themed landscape prints and old advertisements for nautical gear.

Other Considerations

For beach-house owners who want to try decorating ideas that lean on the risky side--for example, bright colors such as turquoise, or a crazy nautical wallpaper pattern--"Country Living" recommends trying out these ideas in the bathroom before implementing them in other rooms.

Advice Cards For A Baby Shower

Everyone at the shower can give advice as well as gifts.

Nothing can fully prepare a new mom for the challenges ahead, but that doesn't stop people from wanting to give advice. Guests at a baby shower can fill out advice cards for the mother, imparting wisdom from years of experience. This can make a fun activity for the party and a nice keepsake for the years to come.

Purpose

The purpose of advice cards is to give a new mom advice that she can use to make it through the first year. Advice might be sentimental, like "Cherish every moment" or it may be more practical, like "Keep a few extra diapers and wipes in the car at all times in case of emergencies." The cards allow guests to present this advice in a formal way, and since they're printed, the mom can review them over and over again.

Style

Many stationery or party stores sell advice cards. You can even personalize them or choose cards that match the theme of your party. Alternatively, you could use index cards or gather the advice before the party and print it out.

Timing

Choose a time to present guests with the advice cards. You might include them with the invitation and ask guests to bring the card to the party with the advice already written on it. Alternatively, you can fill out the cards during the party, either at the beginning when guests arrive or during a specified time.

Presentation

Collect all of the advice cards and put them together to present them to the new mom. You might put them in a keepsake box or a decorative bag made from fabric. You could also punch holes in the corners of the card and tie them together, creating a small book. If there's time at the party, you can present them to the new mom and ask her to read all of the advice out loud.

Christmas Party Planning Ideas

Parties are appropriate anytime, but Christmas offers a special opportunity to plan a spectacular party.

Christmas parties can be planned for family, close friends, business associates, organizations and, somewhat unconventionally, for fundraising purposes. In short, Christmas is the time of year when people want to enjoy themselves and feel very gracious toward others. Planning ideas for Christmas parties include intimate get-togethers for family or friends or cocktail and appetizer parties for business and organizations, and themed parties for fundraising events. Does this Spark an idea?

Family and Friends

Determine a date for the party by communicating with the family members and friends as early as June to determine a date that does not conflict with the plans of others in December. Ask them to mark the probable date on their calendar so that your party date will be the one around which other parties will need to be scheduled. In some cases, conflict of dates is unavoidable and it is the decision of the invitee whether to attend. Send out invitations by card as soon as a definite date is decided upon and a location has been reserved. Follow up by telephone in early November to verify the attendance of the guest. Set the location of the party based on the number of guests and the type of party. In some cases the home of the host will serve well and in mild climates, a tent rental is taken care of well in advance to enlarge the gathering area that the home provides. When renting a meeting room, hall or restaurant, do so as soon as the date is set in June. Some venues are reserved from year to year and the earliest possible date you can make your reservation is critical. A family and friends party usually involves a dinner. If a sit-down dinner is impractical due to the number of guests, set up a buffet of chafing dishes and trays of hot and chilled appetizers. A caterer, contracted well in advance to prepare and drop off the food and chafing dishes is sometimes only marginally more expensive than if the hosts prepare it themselves, but can save a lot of time and energy. If alcohol is served, plan on also having soda, flavored teas, soft drinks, tea and coffee available. Monitor heavy drinkers and make plans to drive inebriated guests home or to their motel. Make arrangements to have a play area, in view of the festivities, to occupy children with toys or electronic games.

Traditional Cocktail Party

Set a date for the party by consulting with some of the key players in your social circle, those planning parties are likely to know the plans of others. Compile a guest list by talking with several close friends. It may not be possible to invite everyone you know, but you certainly don't want to leave out anyone with whom you are close or who will add interest to the party. Send out invitations at least four weeks in advance --- after making arrangements for a venue and date --- and include an RSVP. Note on the invitation that appetizers and beverages will be served. Follow up with a phone call to close friends a week later to be certain the invitation was received. Monitor the RSVPs and after two weeks call anyone who has not responded and demonstrate interest that they attend. When renting a meeting room, hall or restaurant, do so as soon as the date is set. For this season, some venues are reserved from year to year and the earliest possible date you can make your reservation is critical. This event works well when food is catered and arrangements for a professional alcohol bar are made, where minors are monitored and tipsy drinkers are pointed out to the host. Plan to further monitor heavy drinkers and make arrangements to have them driven home if necessary.

Kid's Christmas Party

Sit down with your child and his best friends to determine a guest list. Invite only the number of kids that the house will accommodate and the children monitored and controlled. Include the parents on the invitation with the request that they also attend if possible. Depending upon several factors regarding the kids, the parent's presence provides a steadying influence. Provide your phone number on the invitation and ask the parents to call with any medical condition, including food allergies that you will need to plan for in advance. Also request their cell phone numbers in case of emergency. Mail invitations three weeks ahead of time and have your child call each invitee who has not already responded, one week from the date of the party. Set a Christmas theme for the party such as "Gingerbread Man." Design the invitation, birthday cake, activities and food around this theme. A theme can include decorating their own gingerbread man cookie, pinning the candy cane on the gingerbread man's hand and decorating a gingerbread house. Designate a part of the house for the party and remove all breakables and valuables. Designate a gathering area for the adults in view of the party but not intrusively so; provide coffee, tea, soft drinks and snacks.

Apply For Section 8 Housing Food Stamps

The federal government provides a range of services for families in need. Depending on your income and household size, you may qualify for free housing and food. The food stamp program helps low-income families purchase food while the housing choice voucher, or section 8, program helps families pay for housing.

Housing Choice Eligibility

The Housing Choice Voucher program is administered separately from food stamps. You can apply for housing vouchers through your local public housing authority. Income requirements vary based on the median income of the metropolitan area where you live. In order to qualify for housing vouchers in your area, your income must be less than 50 percent of the median income of your area. In cities with a large number of families in need, qualified applicants are added to a waiting list upon approval.

Getting Section 8

Not every qualified family is added to the Section 8 waiting list. By law, the public housing authority in your area must give you immediate consideration if your income is less than 25 percent of the median income for your area. More than 75 percent of federal aid for Section 8 is reserved for these families. You may also receive immediate consideration if you are homeless or living in a shelter, paying more than 50 percent of your income on rent or are involuntarily displaced.

Food Stamp Eligibility

Food stamps are available to families who meet the federal income requirements. To qualify for food stamps, your net income must be within 100 percent of the poverty level and your gross income must be within 130 percent of the poverty level. In many cases, meeting the minimum requirements for food stamps qualifies you for Section 8 since the national poverty level is determined by income averages nationwide. In addition, the amount of countable resources, such as cash or alimony, for your household must be fewer than $2,000. If you have an elderly or disabled household member, your countable resource limit is $3,000.

Households

Households differ for Section 8 and food stamp qualification. A "household" is considered to be anyone permanently living in your home when applying for Section 8. With food stamps, your household includes anyone in the home who purchases and shares meals together. If other family members live with you but purchase meals separately, they do not affect your food stamp allotment. The income of each of your household members over the age of 18 is considered for both food stamps and section 8.

Length of Aid

The length of time you receive food stamps is called your certification period. Certification periods vary based on your level of need but generally range from a few months up to a year. For Section 8, you are required to sign a minimum one-year lease with each housing voucher. After your lease term is up, you can extend it by leasing month-to-month or signing a new year lease if you still meet the program requirements.

Diy Water Bottle Labels

Water bottles can be a great tool to market a business. Everyone drinks water and they are often carried around and seen by the people near the drinker. Because of the popularity and widespread use of water bottles, placing a logo, business information or other promotional materials on a water bottle can provide widespread exposure. Making labels to place on water bottles is a fairly simply project that can produce high returns.

Design the Label

Determine what you want for the look of the the label. Be sure the bottles have enough information to achieve promotional goals, but be simple enough and displayed large enough to be quickly and easily digested. Consider providing limited information on the label itself while using the label to direct consumers to a Web site for more information.

Produce the Labels

With a design in mind, it's time to make the label. Use software specifically designed to make labels for water bottles or use a standard sized label. Use ink that withstands refrigeration and getting a little bit wet. Consider, too, how the bottles will be distributed. If they will be on ice, laminating labels makes them waterproof.

Attach the Labels

Once the labels are made, attach them to the water bottles. Either cover or remove the bottle's original label. Use enough glue to secure the label so it is seen by as many people as possible. Make sure, too, that the ink on the labels does not bleed if it become wet, as it could stain hands or clothing.

Easy No Bake Cheese Cake

Cheesecake is a popular dessert, and although not overly difficult to make, you can simplify it even more with no-bake recipes. These recipes usually employ another dairy product mixed with the cream cheese to give it a smooth and creamy texture. Instead of baking in the oven, these cheesecake recipes call for refrigeration to thicken and set. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Graham Cracker Crust

This might be the hardest part of an easy no-bake recipe, but of course, you can cheat and buy a prepared graham cracker crust nowadays at almost any grocery store. One cup of graham cracker crumbs--grind in a blender for a superior consistency--placed in a bowl along with 1/3 cup of melted butter and a couple of tablespoons of sugar is all it takes. Use a spoon to press the mix into a 9-inch pie pan. You can make a little more to sprinkle the top of the cheesecake if desired.

If you're making a chocolate cheesecake, graham crackers also come in chocolate flavor, or you could use chocolate wafers or even Oreo cookies.

Cheesecake

One 8 oz. package of cream cheese is all that's needed for an easy no-bake cheesecake recipe. Baking recipes call for two or three packages in some cases. Allow the cream cheese to soften. What to add to the softened cream cheese depends on your personal taste. Condensed milk, whole milk, whipped topping or even sour cream can be added--or a combination of them all. Other not-so-easy no-bake recipes may call for unflavored gelatin packets to thicken the cheesecake. Sugar can be added--1/3 cup to 1/2 cup--or not. Some recipes rely on the sweetness of the whipped topping and the fruit or chocolate topping to sweeten the recipe.

Some lemon juice and vanilla--a teaspoon or two of each--can be folded in to enhance the flavor of the cheesecake.

If desired, a pinch of salt can be added but only recommended if you're using sugar as an added sweetener.

Blend the ingredients until smooth and use a rubber spatula to fill the graham cracker crust.

Refrigerate the cheesecake for two to four hours before serving.

Topping

The best part of the cheesecake is using your favorite topping. Strawberries, cherries, chocolate flakes or chips, pineapple--the possibilities are endless. While canned fruit adds a soupy concoction of sweetness--whether sugar-free or not--fresh fruit is also a delicious alternative that can enhance the recipe with both flavor and aesthetic appeal. If you're looking for easy, slice the cheesecake first, and then add the topping to the individual slices before serving.

Cool Ideas For 14th Birthdays

Talk to your teenager about planning the ultimate birthday bash.

Planning a birthday party for a 14-year-old can be exhausting and challenging. Before planning the party, ask him what kind of party he wants to have, and give him some ideas. If the typical, "I do not care," comes up, then plan a party you think he would enjoy. Teenagers like to hang out with their friends and have a memorable time; therefore, as long as his friends are involved, he will be happy. Does this Spark an idea?

Game Night Party

Set your teenager up with a game night party featuring all of her favorite board games. Invite her friends over for a sleepover or a few hours of birthday fun. Move the table into the living room and place all the games nearby for her and her friends to grab easily. Games can include card games such as blackjack and slap jacks or board games such as Hedbanz and Apples to Apples Junior. Provide snacks such as popcorn, peanuts, trail mixes, pizza and cake and ice cream for dessert.

Scavenger Hunts

Scavenger hunts are a hit at birthday parties because they allow kids to get up and move around while competing. Before the party, pick up a prize pack for the winning team that includes books, games and party favors for the kids to divide among themselves. Create a list of items the kids need to find, such as ketchup packets, plastic spoon, red rock and dustpan. Copy the lists and give one to each child, or one to each team. Once the game is over, the kids come back to the house for cake and ice cream.

Girls' Day

Take the birthday girl and her best friends out for a girls' day. Schedule manicure and pedicure appointments for the girls and take them to the spa. Bring along snacks such as sliced vegetables and fresh fruit for them to munch on during their pamper session, and bottled water. Once the girls are finished, treat them to a lunch at the birthday girl's favorite restaurant and take them to a movie of her choice. If time allows, take the girls to the mall for some retail therapy.

Luau Party

Plan a luau party for the birthday child with some water fun involved. Teenagers enjoy running around and getting their hands wet. Order leis for the kids to wear, and set the house up like a tropical Hawaiian retreat. Hang large paper flowers around the inside and outside of the house, and light tiki torches outside around the patio. Tell kids to bring their swimsuits and set up Slip 'N Slides and water balloon fights, and give them large, super water guns to squirt each other. If you have a pool, open the pool for swimming and set up a friendly game of basketball or volleyball.

Christmas Tablecloth Ideas

Your Christmas tablecloth is an important part of your Christmas table decor.

As you prepare your home for the Christmas holidays, you may want to consider creating a festive setting for your Christmas table. Several Christmas tablecloth ideas are available for you to use to make your own tablecloth or purchase one to add a festive element to your table setting. Creating the family Christmas tablecloth could be something you do on your own, or something that the whole family participates in. Does this Spark an idea?

Two-Layered Tablecloth

By using two different colored pieces of cloth, you can create a unique Christmas tablecloth. It is best to use a dark-colored piece of fabric as the top layer (such as red) and a light color (such as white) as the bottom layer. This will make your designs stand out more by preventing the colors from bleeding into one another. Cut out Christmas designs from the top layer, and either glue or sew them to the bottom layer. If you use glue, apply it to the top layer and do not place any glue close to the cut-out designs to avoid creating a mess on the bottom layer.

Family Cloth

Use plain white tablecloth and have the family create Christmas designs and patterns to put on it. Children can cut designs from felt and glue them to the tablecloth, or they can use fabric paints to create their designs. Anyone in the family who knows sew can use her talents to help embroider designs into the cloth, or sew festive-colored fabric on to it. Each family member should create her own designs, but the smaller children can get a little help from their parents.

Snowflakes and Christmas Trees

If you fold a piece of white cloth together and cut half of a snowflake or Christmas tree design out of it, you will get a whole snowflake or Christmas tree when you unfold it. Get a base tablecloth that is a solid green or red color, and start gluing or sewing your handmade snowflakes and Christmas trees to it to create your Christmas tablecloth. One design idea is to put Christmas trees along the border of the tablecloth and snowflakes in the middle.

Christmas Gift

A simple Christmas table cloth idea that can be augmented in your own style is to overlap two different colored cloths to create one table setting. For example, you could place a white oval tablecloth on the table and then a red rectangular cloth over top of it. You can add trim to the top tablecloth by gluing or sewing gold or silver trim around it. You could also cut strips of green felt and glue them to the white tablecloth and when the red is placed on top it gives the look of a Christmas gift.

Bridal Party Punch Bowl Drinks

A well-selected punch can add a touch of sophistication or whimsy to your bridal party.

Weddings are a time to celebrate, and there are many parties that surround the actual wedding when you can do just that. Occasionally when these parties are thrown, there are several beverages from which to choose; however, serving one perfectly selected punch can go far in adding to your bridal party theme and ambiance. Be sure to select a punch recipe that coordinates with your color scheme and to fully decorate around it, making it the centerpiece of the food table.

Rose Punch

This rose punch recipe has a lovely peachy color and is decorated with raspberries, peaches and pineapple. It is a sweet tasting fresh punch perfect for a bridal party. The recipe will serve nine guests, so be sure to adjust the ingredient amounts to suit your needs. In a pretty punch bowl, mix one 750-ml bottle of chilled rose wine with 2 cups of chilled sparkling yellow lemonade and 2 tbsp. of a raspberry-flavored liqueur, such as Chambord. Combine all liquid ingredients in the punch bowl well without overstirring; take care not to flatten the sparkling lemonade. Add four peaches that have been sliced into thin wedges, and one pineapple that has been cut into 1-inch chunks. When fruit is combined, garnish the punch with 1 pt. of raspberries. Add ice cubes to keep punch chilled after it is left out on the table.

Mimosa Punch

Mimosas are practically a must-have for any good bridal party that starts in the daytime hours. For this mimosa punch, simply put one can of orange juice concentrate that has been thawed but is still cold into a punch bowl and mix with a wooden spoon to soften. Mix in 4 cups of chilled club soda and thoroughly combine. Slowly pour sparkling wine into the orange juice mixture and gently stir, taking care not to flatten the sparkling wine. Garnish the punch with a few thin slices of lemon or orange. This punch recipe will serve eight to 10 people, so adjust the ingredient amounts to suit the number of people you will be serving.

Italian Sparkling Punch

This Italian punch is also called Sgroppino. It will help elevate your soiree into a classy bridal party. In a large punch bowl, mix two bottles of Prosecco that have been chilled with 2/3 cup of cold vodka. Add 2 cups of lemon sorbet that have been slightly softened to the top of the punch. Garnish the top of the punch bowl with a few sprigs of fresh mint leaves. This punch recipe will serve 12 guests. Be sure not to add the sorbet until just before serving so it doesn't melt.

Pink Lemonade Punch

Cake Ideas For A Pool Party Theme

Water games keep kids entertained all day long before the special cake comes out.

Pools are excellent backdrops for parties, because the water provides endless game possibilities with the pool deck and surroundings giving a casual atmosphere where people can relax and let loose. Whether it's a birthday party, Fourth of July barbecue or family reunion, unusual cake designs help to commemorate the party's theme. It's fairly easy to create an impressive looking cake. Does this Spark an idea?

Pirate Ship

A pirate-themed party is a clever idea for young children's birthdays. Having the pirate celebration at the pool adds to the swashbuckling ambiance that kids love. Create a pirate ship cake matching the party theme. Making a three-dimensional cake shaped like a ship may seem daunting, but the wide-eyed "oohs" from the kids will be well worth your effort. Plan ahead when making a the ship cake. Cook two or three round cakes ahead of time. Cut the cakes in half to create four to six half-rounds and freeze them. When thawed, line the cake halves together, rounded sides down, and attach them with a plastic straw pushed through near the bottom so the top is flat, serving as the ship deck. Frost the cake with chocolate icing. Use root beer barrels, soft round chocolate covered caramels and malt balls as your deck barrels, cannons and cannon balls. The sails can be made with barbecue skewers through wafer paper. Place the candles in each "cannon" and light up the pirate ship for battle.

Island Oasis

Stack two 9-inch cakes together and freeze them to make them easier to work with. Remove the center from the cake going about three-quarters inch deep leaving a 1-inch perimeter of frozen or slightly thawed cake. Prepare blue gelatin using only half of the required water and pour it into what will be the pool on the island oasis, and set the entire cake in the refrigerator to let the gelatin solidify. Later, frost around the edge of the entire cake with light blue icing and crush vanilla wafers to create a sandy shore. Bear-shaped graham crackers and fish crackers decorate and populate the water and shoreline.

Swim Team Success

To help a swim team celebrate a great season, create a "swimmer's cake" that replicates an Olympic-size swimming pool. Bake a 13-by-9 inch cake. Allow the cake to cool and dig out a rectangular pool in the center with a serrated knife keeping a 2-inch border on the edges. Prepare blue gelatin using only half the water and pour it into the "pool." Place the cake in the refrigerator to allow the gelatin to solidify. Draw swim lanes with white frosting and use chocolate wafer sections to create the starting blocks. Frost the edge of the cake with white frosting and place malt ball halves in the water as the racers with their swim caps showing out of the water.

Fiddle Basics

Fiddle Basics

If you've ever had the chance to see and hear a fiddler play the violin, you know it's much different than a night at the symphony. Fiddle music is shorter and uses different rhythms and melodies from what you may find in, say, "The Barber of Seville." "Fiddle music" encompasses violins playing bluegrass, Irish, square and contra dances, Latin dances, Cajun dances, and so on. The fiddle has been played all over the world, and its tunes were made for dance.

Getting Started

You will need to find yourself a fiddle and get immersed within its musical circles.

"Try to be around fiddlers when they're playing," said David A. Kaynor, a self taught fiddle player and teacher. Watch them and listen to how they play. Immersing yourself in fiddle music, preferably live fiddle music, will help you learn it yourself. Look for live fiddle music event announcements in the media and attend social dances, such as local square dances. In addition, you'll want to meet people who play the fiddle and get into fiddle playing networks.

Holding the fiddle

There isn't one set way players have to hold a fiddle.

"The correct way to hold a violin for fiddle playing is any way which allows you to play the notes you want to play as comfortably as possible," Kaynor said.

Typically, the violin is held at the shoulder, with your chin or cheek on the chin rest and the bow held at the frog (the end with a black piece). However, not all fiddle players hold it that way.

The Four Strings

The fiddle's strings are: G (the lowest), D, A and E (the highest). Each string has a continuous number of notes. When you place a finger on the string, it shortens it, making the note higher. Depending on how you space your fingers, the note will go up a half or a whole step.

Starting to play

"Start with the music that you like and the music that you know, because it will be easier for you to translate," said Maria McCullough, Old Town School of Folk Music fiddle teacher. For example, one of McCullough's students liked Elvis' music. So, they started playing Elvis.

One beginning song Kaynor recommended is "Old Joe Clark." Two that McCullough mentioned included "Shortening Bread" and "Angeline the Baker."

YouTube is a good source to watch videos of people playing these songs and to hear the song's melodies. To learn songs, practice often: 30 minutes a day if possible. If you live alone, leave your fiddle out, McCullough said. If it's already out and ready to play, so you can pick it up whenever you feel like it.

Reading music

Reading sheet music can be challenging at first, but stick with it and it will be worth it.

Fiddle music is written in treble clef. The lines on the staff from lowest to highest represent the notes: E, G, B, D, and F. The open D string note can be found written in the space below this E note. The spaces on the Treble staff from lowest to highest represent the notes F A, C, and E, or FACE. The C on the G string is one line below the Treble staff. The A on the G string is two lines below the Treble staff.

In music, there are quarter notes (a solid colored note with a stick coming off of it) that get one beat, eighth notes (identifiable from the flag coming off of the note's stick) that get half of a beat, half notes (identifiable from a stick coming off the note and a hollow center) that get two beats, and whole notes (a hollow note with no stick extending off of it) which are played the entire length of a standard (4/4 time) measure.

Last, but not least...

There are plenty of different music available today. If you don't like something, you don't have to play it. So, go out, get involved and get immersed. Until you hear it, you may not believe just what a little fiddle and a skilled player can do.

Happy fiddling!

African American Family Reunion Welcome Speech Ideas

Include segments that tie family history to African-American history.

The welcome speech sets the tone for a family reunion. Among African-American families, it is very important that the speech includes honor, history and humor. The family reunion is a time to celebrate the accomplishments of family members and the progress of African-Americans as a whole. The welcome speech should be written to achieve these objectives and make every family member excited about coming together as one.

Organizers

For the past 35 years, Brother Zawdie Abdul-Malik has served as the president for his family's biannual reunion, which now attracts more than 300 family members. "Make sure that your speech includes recognition and acknowledgement of people who worked hard and diligently to bring the reunion to fruition," he says. "Give them a special award named in honor of family members you can trace back to your earliest 'roots' in the United States." This idea can be expanded to name awards after people from black history. For example, an award can be named after Harriet Tubman, the organizer of the Underground Railroad, and given to the person who organized travel arrangements. Or it can be named for A. Phillip Randolph, the organizer of African American Pullman Porters union. There could also be an award for the family member who kept everybody calm and cool by keeping them laughing, and named after legendary comedian Richard Pryor. Give awards to those who work on genealogy and the family tree, named in honor of Alex Haley, the author of "Roots." Also acknowledge graduates, new births, entrepreneurs and those who have recovered from illnesses or addictions.

Elders

African-American family reunions are known for incorporating honors and tributes to family elders. Pay tribute to the elders of the family, both those who are attending and those who are not able to attend due to age, illness or inability to travel, in your welcome speech. If the facility where the speech is to be given provides audio/visual equipment, you can develop a slide show with pictures of the family elders and their children, along with brief biographical sketches of their lives. Consider creating a timeline that shows what they have witnessed during their lifetime. Use music from the different eras to provide an audio accompaniment to their life history with gospel, jazz, blues and classic rhythm and blues songs.

Events

As you wind down to the close of the speech, get family members eager and excited about participating in the events that will take place. Show pictures from family baseball games or talent shows from the last reunion to encourage participation in family-friendly competition and stir up bragging rights. If it is affordable, tape T-shirts underneath chairs that have been designed with a family reunion logo and year of the gathering. Tell attendees to reach under their chairs to get their T-shirt. If a special contribution has been collected for a family member who is in financial need, have that family member reach under his chair where a surprise envelope with a check inside has been placed. If you're planning free diabetes or blood pressure screenings, announce the place and time. If there's a group trip planned to visit an African-American museum or historical site or nightclub, or you scored tickets for a sports event or concert, tape an envelope with the tickets inside underneath the chairs. This surprise element will bring smiles and energize everyone for the fun family times they will experience.

Do It Yourself Printable Prom Invitations

Make prom even more special by creating your own prom invitations.

When you are a part of the prom committee, one of your responsibilities is to provide the student body with prom invitations. While there are many online services and stationery stores that can provide you with professionally designed and printed prom invitations, you can also use your creativity to make your own invites. A successful invitation has to have the right kind of design, as well as coordinate with your prom theme. Also, you don't want the process to be too manual, since you could be making thousands of invitations, depending on the size of your school.

Instructions

1. Create your design for the front of the card using a digital design program or traditional art. Keep the size of the invitation and theme of your prom in mind. If your prom has a beach theme, include beach designs like the ocean, starfish or sand themes. If you are using traditional media such as colored pencils, markers or paint, scan your work into the computer after completion.

2. Enter all of the prom information, such as location, time and price, in another digital file that fits the printable area of the card. Use an easy-to-read font that matches with your theme, whether that be traditional, modern or playful.

3. Purchase precut, half-fold inkjet card stock from an office supply store. Make sure the paper is compatible with your inkjet printer. A list of compatible printers is often listed on the back of the card stock packaging.

4. Load the cards into the printer according to the manufacturer's directions.

5. Adjust the printer's settings to accommodate the size and orientation of the card. Print one invitation as a test first to see if the size and orientation of the artwork are correct. Make any tweaks to the size, colors or orientation of the artwork before printing several cards.

6. Flip the card and print the prom information on the inside of the card, adjusting the size and orientation as needed.

7. Print your prom invitations, completing the front of the card first, then the inside. Once complete, fold the cards on the prefolded center line and slip them into envelopes.

Beach Party Invitation Ideas

Break away from boring invitations and generate the interest your party deserves with a creative beach party invitation. Get the party started right with an attention-grabbing invitation.

Message in a Bottle

Write the invitation on a thin piece of paper that will roll easily. Stuff the message in a small glass bottle, and add some sand and a few seashells for decoration. Tie a message around the neck of the bottle with the name of the guest.

Stuffed Shells

Use a permanent marker or glitter pen to write a message on the inside of a seashell or seashell replica.

Beach Towel

Create an image of the invitation on a fabric transfer. Then, iron the invitation on to a scrap of fabric that resembles a beach towel.

Audio Invite

Record the invitation onto the computer. Burn a CD with the invitation followed by clips of popular beach-themed songs such as "Wipe Out" by the Safaris or "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" by Brian Hyland.

Gifts

Attach the invitation to a pair of flip flops, small container of sunscreen, or tanning lotion, beach pail, umbrella or other beach necessity.

Couples Shower Wording Ideas

Celebrate a couple's love with a cleverly worded shower invitation.

As of 2010, couples wedding showers---or coed wedding showers---are gaining popularity. As the second event after the engagement party, the bride-and-groom-to-be invite friends and family to help them in their new life---by showering them with registry gifts. When wording a couple's shower invitations, choose the tone you want to communicate to guests. While elegant and heartwarming invitations are standard, feel free to play with the wording to capture the couple's character and enthusiasm for each other. Somewhere toward the end of the invitation, note that both men and women are invited and that guests are welcome to bring gifts addressed to the couple. Does this Spark an idea?

Sentimental

Include images and text that present a sentimental view of the lovers.

Start with a declaration about the love of the couple and their new life together. Something like "Celebrate the exciting news---join us for a dinner party to toast the newly engaged bride and groom." For a classic, sentimental shower invitation, honor the newly engaged bride and groom. If the couple has a couple wedding registry, be sure to tell guests to bring gifts in a warm, heartfelt way. Use wording such as, "to help the couple gather things for their new life together---take a look at x's and y's stunning gift registry." Focused, sincere wording and classic illustrations---like a bride and groom silhouette---round out the tone.

Playful and Witty

If the future bride and groom are playful, word the invitations to show that spirit.

Be creative with the wording to engage the readers and remind them of the creativity of the couple. Open the invitation with the line "We do." Invite guests to "shower the freshly engaged bride and groom" with registry gifts and to "eat, drink and get married." Be sure to let guests know about the theme if applicable. Some couples like to host an after tea party, an evening wine tasting, or an outdoor barbecue to celebrate the news. Incorporate the theme in the word play. For instance, for a wine tasting try a line like "Please bring a bottle of your favorite world wine to toast to this world-class couple." Be sure to flatter the couple and their love for each other in the wording.

Funny and Personal

Show the couple's sense of humor with a funny shower invitation.

Tell guests a bit about the couple's love story in the invitation. If the couple has a funny meeting story or engagement story, start the invitation with a line about the story to fill in the guests. For example, "They dated in high school, parted in college, fell back in love in Boston, broke up in Detroit, made up in New York, settled in Manhattan and (finally) got engaged last week. Join us to celebrate x's and y's wild love story!" You can also try a few rhyming lines, or a complete small funny poem, to draw in readers to the couple's humorous side.

Cold Appetizer Ideas

Serve a platter of combined cold foods for a taste-tempting appetizer.

Cold appetizers--perfect for serving your guests at a picnic or dinner party--do not have to be elaborate, time-consuming or expensive to impress. A few delicious and fresh ingredients are all you need (no chef's skills required) to make these quick and simple cold appetizers. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Cold Stuffed Carrots

This quick and easy cold appetizer mixes it up for an inverted spin on the traditional raw carrots and ranch dip. Slice large, thick carrots into 2-inch angled chunks. With an apple corer, remove the centers. For stuffing, mix a package of ranch dressing mix into a pint of ricotta cheese. If you prefer not to waste food, grate the carrot cores, and toss them into the mixture--some chopped, cooked spinach would go well too. Spoon or pipe the mixture into the carrots for a crisp and creamy cold appetizer.

Deli Garden Tray

Deli meats such as salami are great for cold appetizers.

Green bell peppers, pitted ripe olives, mushrooms, artichoke hearts and cherry tomatoes are just a few of the fresh platter ingredients you can intermingle with a variety of cheeses and deli meats. Cover the tomatoes and mushrooms with Italian vinaigrette dressing before inviting them to the party of ingredients. Everything comes together over a bed of leaf lettuce. With such variety, this fresh platter is sure to offer a flavorful bite to please any palate.

Deli Pasta Kabobs

Deli meat works well on kabobs too. This simple combination of tastes and textures is bound to whet your guests' appetites. Simply combine sliced pepperoni and salami folds, pitted and stuffed olives and cold, cooked cheese tortellini to make mini kabobs. Drench the tortellini and olives with Italian dressing then sandwich them between appetizing deli meats on mini skewers.

Spicy Rolls

Rolled tortillas filled with neufchatel and Mexican-style shredded cheeses and salsa will get those salivary juices going. Add chili powder to this simple cold appetizer recipe, bringing spice to any dinner party.

Stuffed Cherry Tomatoes

Cherry tomatoes are stuffable and poppable.

If you are looking to serve your guests one-bite appetizers, try stuffed cherry tomatoes. Smoky bacon, feta cheese and mayo seasoned with chopped scallions, basil and ground pepper are the perfect filling for cherry tomatoes in a juicy, savory cold appetizer. Make enough for your weekend dinner party and a little extra to stick in Monday's lunch sack.

Birthday Party Bag Ideas

Chocolate coins wrapped in gold foil are perfect for pirate party bags.

Party bags are also known as treat or favor bags and are typically given out to guests at birthday parties. Party bags can contain a wide variety of items; it is important to choose items that complement the party's theme. Does this Spark an idea?

Science Exploration Bag

A science exploration party bag is an ideal choice for a party that took a trip to the zoo or to the planetarium. A science exploration bag can contain a magnifying glass, a compass, a mesh bug cage, or any other items that encourage the guests to explore and examine the world around them.

Pirate Party Bag

Choose paper bags with treasure maps printed on them, or forgo paper bags entirely and instead sew or buy velvet bags. Eye patches, bandannas with skull and crossbones printed on them, and chocolate coins covered in gold foil are all appropriate for pirate party bags.

Dress-Up Party Bag

A princess party is an ideal opportunity for a dress-up party bag. A dress-up party bag can include plastic rings, necklaces and tiaras, as well as a small hand mirror. Small silk handkerchiefs can be thrown in, as can enamel pins. Take pictures of the guests in their dress-up party favors before they leave and send their parents the pictures later.

Garden Party Bag

Garden party bags are meant for spring parties. Create a bag that includes a seed packet, a flower pot, a spray bottle and a package of soil. This allows the party guests to grow their own plants, so look for flowers that are colorful and easy to grow.

Tropical Party Bag

Tropical party bags work for luau parties or parties that are set during the summer time. Include leis, flip-flops, and sunglasses. These are perfect for helping your guests enjoy some time in the sun. Also include inflatable beach balls or sunscreen.

Tea Party Bag

A tea party bag may include a packet of tea, a small teacup, and a cotton handkerchief. Look for a bag that is covered with a delicate Victorian print, or sew bags out of white muslin. A cloth bag can then be tied with ribbon.

Craft Ideas For A Beach Theme Party

Bring the fun of the beach to your friends and family with your own theme party.

Hosting a beach theme party is an easy way to unite friends and family in fun and irreverence. Sensory images associated with the beach, like warm sand under your toes, cool breezes blowing across the water or the aroma of salt wafting across the waves are enough to coax even the most bashful wallflower out of his shell. This theme is suitable for all ages. As part of the theme, consider making crafts that utilize items associated with the shore.

Seashell Candles

If you are hosting an evening beach themed soiree, consider crafting your own twist on the traditional candle. Add soft ambiance to your party by creating seashell candles. Party guests can assemble their own, or you can have extras already prepared and nestled into favor bags, so your friends can take a little piece of the beach home with them. Domestic maven Martha Stewart suggests using deep shells like scallops or clams to ensure that the candles are large enough to last all night. Begin by thoroughly cleaning the seashells and allowing them to dry; if you are running short on time, consider laying them outside so the sun can soak up the moisture from each little crevice. Melt paraffin wax in summer coral hues, using a double boiler. Attach a wick in a metal holder (which you can find pre-assembled at craft stores) to the inside of the shell, and carefully pour the wax into the shell. Be sure to allow the wax to cool thoroughly before use.

Edible Aquarium

If your beach bash is aimed at younger guests, help them to create their own edible aquariums, using blue gelatin, gummy fish or sharks, and clear plastic cups. Prepare the gelatin as normal, pouring it into the plastic cups, and placing the cups in the refrigerator. Allow the substance to set for about an hour, so that it is still partially liquid. Allow your beachgoers to fill their "aquariums" with gummy sea creatures. Place the cups back into the refrigerator so that the gelatin can finish setting. Your party guests can opt to enjoy their catches at the party or take them home as favors. If you won't have time for this activity during the party, you can make one large aquarium, using a clear punch bowl full of gelatin and packing it with fish and sharks.

Sand Art

Guests of all ages will enjoy creating their own colorful sand art masterpieces. Set up a craft station complete with bowls of brightly colored sand, each equipped with its own scoop. Also provide clear glass bottles, which can be reused from products like olive oil or salad dressing, but must be cleaned and dried thoroughly. If you are on a tight budget, you also can use clear plastic soda or water bottles, with the labels removed. Be sure to lay out funnels to ensure precision when your guests are creating their own masterpieces.

Decorating Tips For A Red Carpet Party

Decorating to achieve Hollywood glamor doesn't have to be expensive.

In addition to creating a very special Oscar Night, a Red Carpet or Hollywood Party is a great way to celebrate an important teen birthday, like sweet 16, although young children can have fun with the theme too. A birthday celebrant and friends will look and feel fabulous enjoying an evening of Oscar-style glamor. The question is how best to achieve a Night at the Oscars Look for your home on a budget. Fortunately, decorating for a Red Carpet Party is easy. Does this Spark an idea?

Entrance

It's not a red carpet party without a red carpet runner, stretching from the front door to the sidewalk. These items can be found inexpensively from online party suppliers and specific Hollywood party sources. Parents and other helpers stand around and snap pictures as paparazzi or pretend to be autograph hounds or bodyguards. At a birthday party, the birthday celebrant can either greet them at the door or make their own fabulous entrance if they get ready at a friend's house or go out for dinner first.

Decorations

Choose a color scheme that reflects Hollywood opulence. Use black, gold, red or silver or a selected combination as the colors for balloons, streamers and the tablecloth if you're serving dinner or setting out a snack table. Choose disposable plates, cups and napkins in black, gold or silver to go with the colors. Use latex helium balloons for basic decorations and introduce a few more expensive gold or silver star-shaped foil balloons for added glamor. You can purchase gold or silver stars to hang from the ceiling from party suppliers or make your own using star stencils and gold or silver card stock from the craft store.

Hollywood Touches

Get black and silver or gold glitter top hats from the party store and use them to serve candies, potato chips and, most appropriately, popcorn. Sprinkle star confetti over the snack table or dining table and on other surfaces. Hollywood-specific party supplies to use as party decorations range from Oscar statuettes to film canisters and director's clapboards and centerpiece combinations. Inexpensive items you can pick up at a novelty or dollar store and use as decorations include plastic sunglasses, toy lipsticks and feather boas. Wrap the boas around top hats, clapboards or statuettes and set sunglasses and lipsticks among the feathers to create table arrangements with a Hollywood glamor theme.

Discount First Birthday Party Decorations

First birthday party decorations don't have to be expensive.

Your child's first birthday party is cause for a big celebration. After all, it's the first birthday party you get to throw for her. However, it can be expensive throwing a child's birthday party, and a few tips will help you economize for the big day. Does this Spark an idea?

Balloons

Balloons can be expensive, particularly if you want to put helium in them. Instead of using balloons, replace them with festive Chinese lanterns for an "around-the-world" party theme. While these lanterns may initially be more expensive than balloons, you can keep them after the party and use them in the future, for a second birthday party or as everyday household lighting.

Tablecloths

One-year-old children can be messy, and you'll want to cover your table. However, instead of using a store-bought paper tablecloth, try using an old sheet. This can become even more festive if you hand out markers and let children color on the sheet while they're at the table. This way, you'll also have a souvenir from the party that will last a long time.

Wall Decorations

Instead of using expensive store-bought wall decorations, make your own. You can even use recycled paper or the backside of scrap paper you've already used, and print out images online that fit in with your theme. While you'll still have to pay for printing and paper, you will spend a lot less money in the end than you would buying decorations at the store.

Easy Cake Designs

A beautiful or creative cake is not just for bakeries to create and you to purchase. Although making a designed cake will take some time and lots of patience, there are multiple tips and tricks to make it an easy activity. Guests will enjoy eating the cake while thinking it took you days of slaving in the kitchen to create such a masterpiece. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Big Shapes

Before baking anything, decide on a design and theme for your cake. Whether you want a princess castle or a mountaintop scene, keep your cake base to large, easy-to-frost shapes. Cutting lots of small cake pieces to arrange and frost will result in a crumbling mess unless you have expert hands and frosting abilities. Use rectangles and squares as much as possible because the corners are easy to cover with frosting. A cake mold that results in a rounded top is also an easy shape to frost. Avoid triangles or shapes with lots of small pieces or corners, like a star.

Perfect Frosting

The one thing that will make your cake look neat, clean, and crisp is the frosting. A cake with smooth, even frosting on all sides will set the stage for additional decorations and colorful designs. To get your frosting this way, first frost the entire cake, beginning with the sides and ending with the top. Then, grab a cup of warm water and a butter or frosting knife. Dip the knife into the water and then run it lightly over the edges and the top, placing the knife back into the water after each run through the frosting. This is a simple and easy way to smooth out any rough edges and help even out the frosting all around for a beautiful, blank template for your creative designs.

Premade Details

Instead of trying to make tiny animals out of frosting or fondant, visit a craft store to purchase perfectly made miniatures. For a forested mountaintop, purchase tiny evergreen trees and woodland animals. A princess cake requires Her Majesty sitting atop a tiny plastic throne along with faux plastic gems lining the sides of the cake. For any lettering, such as "Happy Birthday!" or "Congrats!" use fondant like cookie dough and cut out the letters with small letter-shaped cookie cutters. This will result in an even, sharp-looking message that really pops off the cake instead of a scribbled mess with piped frosting.

Beach Interior Design Ideas

Beach design brings the outside in.

Designing an interior with the beach in mind is the perfect idea for the home owner who values relaxation and serenity. Beach designs center on the experience of peering out over the sand and water on a beautiful, sunny day. You'll find the same textures that you would feel when walking down the boardwalk. You also get a sense of the same hospitable atmosphere found at the neighborhood seafood restaurant. Does this Spark an idea?

Colors and Textures

Colors and textures in beach design are pulled directly from the outdoors. They reflect the ocean, the sky, the sun and the sand. For interior walls, choose a pale blue that will mimic the appearance of the summer sky. Use yellow accents throughout your room to brighten the space just as the sun brightens up the shore. Choose various shades of blue in furniture to pull in the colors of the ocean, and use beige, brown and taupe in floor colors and accessories to mirror a sandy beach. Add texture by using tweed furniture as opposed to something overly soft, and display seashells in a glass vase or as art on the walls.

Furniture

There is no need for anything fancy when it comes to beach design. The main idea is to create a casual, comfortable, livable space without going overboard. Furniture should be minimal in the living room but should also serve dual purposes. Consider purchasing a sleeper sofa so that you can pull it out for extra overnight guests. Buy an oversize dining room table with bench-style seating that you can use inside on a rainy day or carry outside for a summer picnic.

Accessorize

Accessories are what makes beach design so unique. Nowhere else will you find fishing nets, lighthouses and captain's wheels hanging on the walls. Use any sort of nautical elements that remind you and your family of time spent at the beach as accessories in interior beach design. Seashells are, of course, one of the most common accessories in beach-themed interiors. Consider drilling holes in them and threading them onto a piece of rope to hang from the ceiling. Drape nets from ceiling corners and tack on a fishing lure here and there.

Games To Play At A Senior Citizen'S Birthday Party

Celebrate a senior's special day with fun games.

Games aren't just for kids. Senior citizens have a wide amount of experiences to draw upon when celebrating a birthday. The first thing to consider when planning the games to play at a senior citizen's birthday party is the health and mobility of the senior and the other guests. Make sure to plan activities that all the seniors can participate in so you do not alienate any of the guests with activities that are too strenuous for some. Choose activities and games that everyone can enjoy. Does this Spark an idea?

Adapt a Pinata

Pinatas are a favorite kid's birthday activity and a traditional part of Cinco de Mayo celebrations. They are easily made with papier mache. A piñata is supposed to be difficult to break open. Adapt the design of the piñata by using a paper bag instead of papier mache. You can also use brown paper wrapping cut into shapes and stapled or glued at the edges. The paper will be much easier to break than papier mache. Since some seniors might think a piñata is too difficult to break open, they will be happy to see that they can still enjoy it.

Trivia Games

Board games with trivia questions have been popular for generations. Find one that contains plenty of questions from the era the seniors remember most fondly. If you are planning a party for family or a group of close knit friends, you can use the trivia board game and create your own questions based entirely on the people playing the game. For instance, if the senior citizen birthday party is for an elderly family member, make all the questions be about family members, such as birthdays, middle names and anniversaries. The personalization of the trivia will engage all the players. If the party is for a group of seniors, make the questions be about a time or place that all the players shared.

Bingo

Plan your own bingo game. Bingo allows seniors to chat while playing an easy game with little stress or activity. You can make the game more fun by having an energetic and entertaining bingo caller. The prizes the seniors win for each round of bingo will also make the game fun and memorable. If this is a family party, engage younger members of the family to design the bingo cards especially for the party.

Dancing and Movement

Some seniors are more physically active in their older years than when they were young and enjoy doing things that get them up and moving around. Try some kind of dance activity such as a dance contest to see who has the best moves when all the players vote. Or make a modified scavenger hunt where players have to search the premises for clues and items in order to win a prize. If weather permits, plan an outdoor game of bocce ball, croquet or mini-golf.

Backyard Party Ideas For High School Graduation

High school graduation is a joyous time but also one for reflection on the future

High school graduation is a definite milepost in the travel through life. Most people are so eager to finish it up that they forget it harbors some of the best times of their life. Themes and activities at backyard graduation parties that are aimed at congratulating the graduate while reminding them of the better times they experienced are important. Asking for a glimpse of their plans for the next 5 years brings a reality to the whole experience. Does this Spark an idea?

Time Capsule Party

Have each guest bring a digital camera and have at least one or two on hand to supply those who do not have access to one. Set up a barbecue style cookout in the backyard with all of the food prepared ahead of time except for the burgers. In addition to the camera, ask each guest to bring a memento of high school that has meaning for them. Items such as a trophy, an article in the school paper, favorite clothing or anything else that symbolizes their high school experience will do fine. During the cookout, encourage everyone to take as many pictures as possible and to have others take pictures of them with close friends. Place the pictures on discs labeled with the name of the person who took them. Finally, have everyone write a message to themselves for five years into the future. Place the discs, mementos, messages and a graduation book in a time capsule. The time capsule can be any container that is air-tight, moisture-proof and difficult to break or damage. Bury the time capsule at least three feet into the backyard and have everyone sign a vow to return in five years for another cookout and the opening of the capsule.

Whew! That Parts Over

A high school graduation party is about the completion of young childhood and the beginning of adulthood. The theme of the party is "relax, we've finished the first step," the completion of high school. The party invitations ask each guest to bring pictures of them from kindergarten through the 9th grade. The invitation also asks each guest to bring a brief written statement about their plans for the year after their graduation. The dress is ultimate casual with big hats, sunglasses and sunscreen. A banquet of snack foods is prepared and sitting out on tables and plenty of lawn chairs are available. Provide a variety of music and a disc player. The pictures brought by each guest are placed on a wall with a sheet hanging down to shield the view from others. The written statements are dropped into a sealed box with a hole in the top. The guests arrange themselves around the wall with the pictures and as one person points out a picture a consensus, amid much laughter and discussion is reached as to who the person is. The statements are then removed from the box and read aloud and again the group guesses who wrote them.

Decorate the back yard with a large "Good Luck Graduates." The party conveys the message, congratulations on finishing high school, and the food and d cor reflect that. Muffins and cookies with that message, as well as lots of snack food and beverages are available. Guests receive invitations with tassels attached, and a special request to use the invitation to write out a moment in high school that has stayed with them. This moment could be about them or someone or something they have observed from others. They are also asked to briefly write out thoughts they have for the future. The invitation stresses that future thoughts do not have to be set in stone. Upon arrival by the guest, the host or hostess collects the invitations, and after everyone has eaten, reads them and lets the group decide who wrote it. The host guides and encourages the others to comment or talk about each answer.

Backyard Theme Ideas

A tiki bar can be the centerpiece of a tropical themed backyard.

Your backyard can provide an outdoor retreat at the end of a long day and serve as space to entertain family and friends for summer barbecues and picnics. Depending on how you plan to use the yard, there are variety of themes that may be used to design an attractive and functional landscape. Factors such as budget, climate and available space may affect your options, but a little creativity can make your backyard feel like a own private oasis. Does this Spark an idea?

English Garden

An English garden theme is ideal for providing a romantic look for your backyard.

Begin with flowers in three or four main colors. For a bolder look, opt for colors that contrast with one another. However, if you prefer a more unified look, use flowers in lighter and darker tones from the same color family. Flower varieties that work well in an English garden backyard theme include roses, foxglove, daises and climbing vines like clematis and morning glory.

A trellis or lattice fencing may be added to the yard for the vines to grow over so a vertical element is incorporated into the design.

Tropical

Creating a tropical look for your backyard can help recreate memories from your favorite beach vacation. Because tropical plants only survive at certain temperatures, place plants like calla lilies, birds of paradise and palm trees in pots so you can bring them inside when the temperature drops. A lagoon style pool or waterfall can add a dramatic look to your yard as well. A tiki bar is a fun option if you entertain frequently. Look for a bar that features a thatched roof and bamboo accents for an authentic look.

Japanese Zen Garden

A Japanese Zen garden theme can create a relaxing, calming landscape in your backyard. Add a rock garden by laying down a bed of sand and gravel and placing larger rocks throughout it. Choose sand and gravel that is gray, beige or white and darker rocks for contrast.

A water feature is another key element in a Japanese Zen garden theme, so consider adding a koi pond or small waterfall that leads into a pond. For a traditional look, install a bridge near the water feature. Add a bench so you can take in the sights and sounds of your Zen garden.

Desert

A desert theme is an ideal option if you want a low maintenance look for your backyard that requires little watering or mowing. Instead of grass, use gravel or pebbles to fill in areas of the yard. Palms trees and cacti can be placed in the middle of the beds for added greenery. For a decorative look, use terracotta tiles for a patio space or a path through the gravel.

Foods Native To Hawaii

Hawaiian cuisine is very healthy, as it is naturally flavored.

Contrary to popular belief, pineapples are not native to Hawaii. Neither are mango, guava or papaya. However, hala (which resembles and tastes like pineapple) is an island native. This fruit is normally eaten by itself, although it can be added to other Hawaiian dishes to give entrees a local island flavor. There are various foods native to Hawaii, some of which are staples at luau feasts. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Laulau

Laulau is a native Hawaiian entr e that incorporates pork, chicken, vegetables, or a combination of these. It is prepared by wrapping taro leaves (Hawaiian spinach leaves) around the meat or vegetable to form a pouch that seals in the moisture and flavor. Laulau is pressure-cooked in a steamer oven. Before eaten, the taro leaf shell is removed since the leaves are not edible. The dish is seasoned with Hawaiian salt, a natural, unprocessed sea salt.

Hala

Hala, also known as "screw pine" or "tourist pineapple," is nearly identical to the fruit from which it derives one of its names. (Pineapple is, contrary to popular belief, not native to Hawaii; it was imported from Brazil). Hala fruit grows on trees and has a cone-like outer shell or covering (like pineapple) that is removed to get to the edible interior.

Haupia

Haupia is a native Hawaiian dessert that consists of coconut milk and sugar as the primary ingredients. Haupia is similar in texture and consistency to pudding, but is served in blocks. The dessert is traditionally prepared by heating coconut milk and mixing it with arrowroot until it hardens. In modern recipes, the arrowroot is replaced by cornstarch and seasoned with sugar and salt.

Poke

Poke (or "pokey" or "poki") is a salad made from raw ahi tuna. With over 100 varieties in Hawaii, poke is normally flavored with sesame oil, kukui nut and seaweed. Poke is considered the Hawaiian equivalent of sashimi, since it incorporates vegetables and raw fish.

Kalua

Kalua is pig or pork that is cooked in an "imu" (an oven it the ground). Kalua is traditionally the centerpiece of a Hawaiian luau, where it is displayed on a large rod or stick. It is seasoned and flavored with Hawaiian salt.

Flowers & Traditions

Flowers have always held meaning in cultures throughout history. In our own, flowers are given and received with various assumptions behind their meaning. Special considerations should be given to certain types of flowers when giving them as gifts. The idea of color has also held many traditions when coupled with flowers. Does this Spark an idea?

History

The modern language of flowers had its humble beginnings in Turkey. People used to pass the time by guessing what the meanings were behind each flower. Flowers were also a means of secret communication between lovers. It was not until the Victorian era that meaning was given to each individual flower. It was the Victorians who perfected the language of flowers. Men would pick flowers that had particular meanings to show their feelings to a lady.

Traditions

There are countless traditions that involve the use of flowers. For example, there are many flowers associated with weddings. Some flowers associated with weddings are roses (particularly red, white and pink), tulips for spring weddings, daisies and cala lilies. The white Madonna lily is associated with the Virgin Mary by Christians. The lily was supposedly yellow until she picked one up. Lilies are used at weddings as well as funerals. The Romans used to use white lilies as medicines. The carnation was quite important to the ancient Greeks and Romans. Koreans believed the flower could tell fortunes.

Birth Flowers

Much like the idea of the birth stone, certain specific flowers are traditionally associated with each month of the year. January's flower is the carnation, which originated in Asia. February's is the iris. The flower symbolizing March is the daffodil. Daisies represent April, and lilies represent May. Roses are the flowers that symbolize June, and delphiniums represent July. The flower that symbolizes August is the gladiola, and asters represent September. Marigolds are October's flower, and chrysanthemums are November's. Poinsettias, the Christmas flower, represent the month of December.

Color

Color has played a large part in tradition. It provides subtle variation on the traditions of flowers themselves. Red flowers convey passion and love. Supposedly perfect for any occasion, pink flowers signify grace and happiness. Orange flowers convey excitement and enthusiasm. Yellow flowers show friendship and joy. Purple flowers are symbols of pride and joy. White flowers convey innocence and purity; black flowers convey obsession. Green flowers are said to bring good luck, showing stability and harmony. Blue flowers represent confidence and security.

Symbols

Yellow flowers are associated with spring, symbolizing new beginnings and friendship. Orange flowers are associated with the sun, making bold statements of vitality. Red flowers symbolize fire, strength and of course, desire.

Bridal Party Decoration Ideas

Typically called a bridal shower, a bridal party celebrates the bride and takes place a short time before her wedding. Decorations play a key role in setting the mood for the shower. They can range from casual to elegant. Does this Spark an idea?

Beach or Luau

Many couples have destination weddings in tropical locations. If the bride you're celebrating is planning this kind of wedding, give the party a beach or luau theme. Use blue and turquoise balloons to decorate the party area. Add centerpieces made of ocean-blue candles, sand and seashells. Use rustic wood or wicker tables and chairs if possible. Play light beach music and serve beach and luau fare, such as grilled fruit kabobs and finger sandwiches.

Traditional

For a more traditional or elegant bridal party, consider using decorations that are simple and tasteful. Traditional bridal colors are pearl white and sliver. Decorate the party area with white and silver balloons. Cover the tables with pristine white linens and add centerpieces of roses or freshly cut flowers. Small tea lights around the centerpieces are a nice touch, particularly for evening parties. Cover the chairs and consider wrapping a linen bow around each chair in silver or a color from the bridesmaids' dresses. Select napkins, cups, plates and flatware in an elegant bridal theme or with touches of silver. With this theme, less is more.

Other Decorations

The following traditional decorations can be woven into a bridal party, regardless of theme: a wishing well for small gifts, paper wedding bells, a large chair draped in satin for the bride to sit in, candles, fresh flower arrangements and champagne glasses, which make lovely gifts for guests.
