Country Reception Ideas

Wagon wheels make a great decoration at a country-themed wedding.

Let the country inspire you when planning your upcoming wedding and reception. Bring a little bit of the outdoors to treat your guests to a relaxing, laid-back atmosphere through country living. Country wedding themes are sometimes also referred to as western or country-western, but are all themed around the celebration of the outdoors and your special day.

Venue

If the weather will be warm enough, try to plan your wedding outdoors in an open, country setting. Some outdoor venues can include a hillside, near an old mill, plantations, ranches or next to a barn. For outdoor weddings, plan on having a tent set up for your reception, just in case the weather does not stay nice for you. For indoor weddings, try finding venues such as a barn, bed and breakfast or country lodge.

Favors

Send your guests home with a little something from the country. Tie a ribbon around a miniature metal watering can and fill it with candy. Offer up some luck to your guests and tie a ribbon around a pair of horseshoes and tie them to a small cowboy hat. Give guests some light in their life by decorating a small mason jar with a ribbon or paint and place a votive candle holder and candle inside. Small jars of maple syrup will give guests a reason to make pancakes when they get home.

Food

For your reception, choose foods that represents the type of wedding theme you have planned. Keep courses simple and serve food from a buffet. For appetizers, offer melon balls, deviled eggs, cheese straws, crab cakes, corn fritters or a vegetable tray. For the main course, serve meats such as fried chicken, beef brisket, barbecue anything and roasted turkey. Side dishes can include mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, coleslaw, green beans, baked beans, corn on the cob and grits.

Decorations

When shopping for a venue, try to find one that is naturally decorated by Mother Nature or an indoor venue that is already decorated with a country theme. Decorations can include large metal watering pails and wagon wheels. Decorate tables with a flower-filled metal pail, fake fruits and candles. Place oversized rocking chairs around the dance floor to give your guests a place to sit in between all of the wedding activities.
