Free Things To Do In Kauai

Waimea Canyon is one of many free attractions on Kauai.

Kauai, the northernmost Hawaiian island, contains spectacular rain forests, majestic mountains, rough cliffs and more than 50 miles of beaches. Kauai offers plenty of outdoor activities as well as many natural, historical and archaeological places of interest. Kauai has many free activities and attractions for the budget-minded traveler.

Opaekaa Falls

The Opaekaa Falls are a spectacular sight on Kauai's east side. An overlook just off Route 580 offers a view of the falls. Just up the road from the falls is an overlook for the Wailua River Valley. The falls flow year-round. The overlook provides the best way to view them because there is no trail to the base.

Poipu Beach Park

Once voted America's best beach by the Travel Channel, Poipu Beach Park on Kauai's south shore offers something for everyone. A small wading pool separated from the ocean by a sandbar provides a place for young children to enjoy the water. Activities on the open water include swimming, surfing, and snorkeling. The park also provides showers, picnic areas, restrooms and lifeguards, all at no cost. Beach visitors can see endangered Hawaiian monk seals, and humpback whales can be spotted from December to May.

Waimea Canyon

With its red lava beds and wide valley, Waimea Canyon is often referred to as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. The canyon lies next to Kokee State Park. Several overlooks and 45 miles of trails offer ways to explore the canyon. No entrance fee is required for Kokee State Park or Waimea Canyon, but some backcountry hikes require paid permits. If you want to stay overnight, the park offers camping for a fee.

Kauai Coffee Co.

The Kauai Coffee Co. offers free coffee tasting at its visitor center. You may also take free self-guided walks to see how the company grows, harvests and processes the coffee. The company, whose roots stretch to the early 1800s, owns 22,000 acres on Kauai. The visitor center is open seven days a week.
