Games To Play With People On Different Computers

Multiplayer computer games allow people to interact in-game, resulting in a more social gaming experience.

Staying in touch with and spending time with friends and family members is important to maintain healthy relationships. Unfortunately, it is not always possible to see your loved ones in person as often as you would like. Multiplayer games, or games that can be played by multiple people in different locations, allow friends and family members to spend time together, challenge each other and have a little fun at the same time.

World of Warcraft

"World of Warcraft" is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game, or MMORPG. Players to choose a race, a class and immerse themselves in an ongoing war as either "Horde" or "Alliance," the two factions within the game. The game offers several styles of play: player-versus-environment, in which players complete quests and battle non-player characters; player-versus-player, in which players battle other players of the opposite faction; and dungeons, where groups of five, 10 or 25 players tackle difficult monsters and villians. The game also possesses an intricate crafting system, allowing players to create their own in-game items. "World of Warcraft" is played online and requires a subscription fee of $15 per month.

Lord of the Rings Online

"Lord of the Rings Online" is an MMORPG that allows players to immerse themselves in Middle Earth, the realm created by J.R.R. Tolkien in his "Lord of the Rings" novels. Players can complete quests, tackle dungeons with five of their friends or create items via an intricate crafting system. Although the game is more focused on player-versus-environment scenarios, there is an option to play against other players by taking on the roll of a monster. "The Lord of the Rings Online" is a free-to-play game, meaning that there is no monthly subscription required, but players can choose to pay a monthly subscription or purchase in-game perks to increase their gaming experience.

Minecraft

"Minecraft" is a strategy game, developed by Markus Persson in 2009, in which players place blocks to build various structures. It is not simply a building game, however, as monsters appear during the in-game night to challenge players and destroy structures that have been built. "Minecraft" is currently played on player-created servers and requires a game purchase, or gift code, in order to play. The game's graphics are fairly basic compared to many MMORPGs, but the game-play is unique and possesses challenges and customization options sure to entertain children and adults alike.

Doom

"Doom" was originally released in 1993 by id Software, setting a precedent for first person shooter games, three-dimensional graphics and multiplayer capability. Although many other multiplayer games have since surpassed "Doom" in graphics and game play, "Doom" remains popular. "Doom" can be played online via a platform called "ZDaemon," which allows players to log into private servers created by other players, or to create their own custom server. Multiplayer "Doom" can be played in cooperative mode, in which players work together to achieve objectives, or in competitive mode, in which players combat one another. Playing "Doom" via "ZDaemon" is free of charge, requiring only the creation of a free account.

Messenger Games

Popular messenger services, such as "Microsoft Network," "Yahoo!," and "America Online," allow contacts to play browser-based games with one another. Available games vary by messenger service, but most well-established services have a variety of puzzle, card, strategy and role-playing games available for users. To begin a game, users simply open a chat window with the desired contact, choose a game and invite their contacts to play the game with them. Messenger service games tend to be simple in terms of graphics but offer players competitive and challenging gaming experiences.
