70s Themed Party Dress Up Ideas

70s Themed Party Dress Up Ideas

The 1970s were full of identifiable fashion trends. By choosing a look that's either iconic and easily recognizable or one that's 70s-inspired and all your own---you'll be sure to look the part at any 70s-themed event. Does this Spark an idea?

Classic 1970s Looks

Dressing for a 70s-themed event should be fun and according to your personality. The easiest place to go to for inspiration are the television shows, music and movies of the time: "Foxy Brown," "Saturday Night Fever," "The Village People, "The Brady Bunch," "Charlie's Angels," "Hawaii Five-O" and "Starsky and Hutch." By looking at a few of these programs you'll see what was popular and in style during the decade of disco. When you see something you like, try to find outfits or costumes online that will allow you to dress as your character of choice. There are many places online to order iconic fashion staples of the time: John Travolta-style "Saturday Night Fever" leisure suits, pimp capes with purple tiger-printed feathered hats, Indian headdresses, construction and biker helmets and cop hats.

One classic look for guys is John Travolta's look from "Saturday Night Fever." To accomplish this, find a white suit. It doesn't have to have bell-bottomed pants, because you can wear the pants shorter to accomplish a 70s feel. Next, you need a black button-down shirt you can flip the collar over the collar of the suit jacket. Finally, polish off the look with some gold chains and a pair of black shoe-boots and you'll be ready to get down tonight.

For the ladies, a fun and simple look to create is that of Foxy Brown.

To accomplish this, you'll need an Afro wig, a mini skirt and a halter top (preferably brown, suede and fringed). Complement the look with a pair of platform boots, and a feather necklace that you can make yourself---and you'll be the sassiest 70s chick at the party.

Outside the Box

If you don't want to look like a character from the 70s, try creating your own look from fashion styles of the period. Butterfly collars, bell bottom pants, Afro wigs, sideburns, high-waisted jeans, Hawaiian shirts, Farrah Fawcett flipped hair, leather blazers, Converse sneakers, platform shoes, mini-dresses, fringed vests, large sunglasses and headbands. You can still create a chic look that suits your own personal style, that's totally 70s without looking like a caricature from the period.

Guys can try this simple look on with things easily found in your closet or department store: a Hawaiian shirt with khaki pants, gold chains and shoe-boots. Add long sideburns and a longer hair style and you have a great signature 70s look.

Ladies can start the look by thinking about big, flipped and feathered hair on each side and parted down the middle. The bigger the hair and the more flips, the better. For makeup, a simple glitter eyeshadow and sparkly lip-gloss will do. Next, try to find a halter top and some boot-cut or flared jeans or a mini-skirt, which can be found in most local apparel stores or thrift shops. Finish your look with flip-flops, a wedge heel or a stacked/platform boot and shake your groove thing into the night.
