Statesboro, Georgia, is in Bulloch County, approximately 50 miles northwest of Savannah. Georgia Southern University Wildlife Education Center
The Wildlife Education Center is on the campus of Statesboro's Georgia Southern University, off Georgia Highway 301. The Center offers exhibits that relate to wildlife found throughout the state of Georgia. Senior citizens receive admission discounts every day at the Center. The grounds of the Georgia Southern University Wildlife Education Center cover 18 acres. Seniors can listen to an audio tour as they travel the grounds, viewing exhibits that feature live waterfowl, eagles, reptiles and other animals. Programs and demonstrations are featured each day.
Georgia Southern University Wildlife Education Center is open Monday through Friday year-round and on Saturdays during the spring, autumn and fall. The Center remains closed on Sundays year-round. As of October 2010, senior citizens admission is $1 for one visit or $6 for an unlimited number of visits per year. On-site parking is available.
Kiwanis Ogeechee Fair
Each year, The Kiwanis Club of Statesboro hosts its Ogeechee Fair in the city of Statesboro. The event began in 1961 and runs for six days during the month of October. The Club typically designates one day during the festival as Senior Citizen Day, during which seniors enjoy discounted admission rates. The Kiwanis Ogeechee Fair features carnival rides such as a ferris wheel and merry-go-round and a variety of games. Seniors can browse through a selection of vendor booths that sell home arts and crafts. An art show is also featured as part of the festivities with works displayed in an on-site gallery for browsing. Livestock shows are held throughout the Fair.
The Kiwanis Ogeechee Fair takes place at the Kiwanis Fairgrounds in Statesboro along Georgia Highway 67. On-site parking is available throughout the event and is free of charge.
Parks and Recreation Department Club Program
The Statesboro Bulloch County Department of Parks and Recreation sponsors a club program for residents of Statesboro and the rest of the county who are 50 years old and over. To join, residents must pay a one-time annual membership fee and can then attend an unlimited number of club events throughout the year. As of October 2010, the annual fee is $15. The program features a number of regularly scheduled weekly activities for seniors. To encourage outdoor recreation, the club offers light exercise and recreation classes, such as chair aerobics, water aerobics, line dancing and yoga. Seniors can also enroll in workshops to learn computer skills or participate in games such as bingo, bridge and canasta each week. Members of the club can also take advantage of day trips and tours to area attractions. The locations for club activities vary. Advanced registration is necessary for some classes and activities.
