Classic Luau Party Ideas

Leis are a big part of the Hawaiian luau tradition and experience.

You can throw a classic luau party for just about any occasion. A luau is a Hawaiian party that features Hawaiian food, drinks and entertainment. Luaus are common party themes because they provide a relaxing setting that make guests feel they are on vacation on a tropical island.

Backyard Luau

When sending out the invitations, recommend dress attire, which may include Hawaiian shirts, sandals, leis and raffia skirts. Decorate your backyard with lights, tiki torches and flowers, and find some traditional Hawaiian music to play in the background. Purchase a variety of single flowers for female guests to place behind the ear or in the hair. Luau parties should have a wide variety of virgin and alcoholic fruit cocktails for the guests to consume. To enhance the luau theme, pour drinks into colorful cups and long straws.

Beach Luau

The beach is the perfect location to hold a luau-themed party. With the ocean or lake in the background and sand slipping between your toes, guests will automatically feel like they're in Hawaii. While decorating the beach may not be very practical, you can set the mood with some Hawaiian music and bond fire. Have a little station where each guest can make a drink. The nice thing about having a luau at a beach is that there is plenty of room to play games. Playing volleyball, doing the limbo or having a three-legged race are all enjoyable activities that everyone can participate in.

Home Luau

Even though it may be cold outside, it doesn't mean you can't have a luau party indoors. With a little imagination and creativity, you can turn your basement or living room into a festive luau party. Even if you have limited space, it does mean you can't have activities. Guests can dance with each other, have a hula-hoop contest or make creative leis. In addition to serving drinks, having a luau in your home is ideal for creating authentic Hawaiian dishes, such as fruit platters, chicken kebab, roasted pineapple and guava cake.
