Cheap Home Bar Ideas

Add a home bar to make entertaining fun.

Whether you want to add some zing to your basement rec room or make your patio even more guest-friendly, a home bar is a great addition to your entertainment arsenal. You could have a wet bar professionally installed that includes beer taps, a Burl Wood counter and brass foot rail---at a cost to you of thousands of dollars. The much simpler, much cheaper solution is to make a "dry" bar yourself, and the advantage of this method is that your home bar will be as unique as your home itself.

Inside

All you need for a basic bar setup is a high countertop and some bar stools, so reclaim an old kitchen island from a salvage yard or thrift store. They come in a wide variety of styles, so you're bound to find one that you like; they're also made to use with bar stools so they're already the correct height. Another idea is to set up a sturdy 4-foot tall bookcase as a bar. Choose one that is at least 18 inches deep and turn it with its back to the room; the shelves can hold liquor and supplies. Cover the back with mirror tiles, wallpaper or self-adhesive plastic sheets to fit in with your room décor. Hang a large mirror on the wall behind the bar---or cover the wall with mirror tiles--- and add a fluorescent beer sign and some well-padded bar stools and you're in business.

Outside

For a cheap outside bar, all you have to do is stack cinder blocks in columns until they've reached the height you want and then stretch a board across the top. Be sure the columns are high enough so that, when someone is sitting at the bar, their knees will fit under the countertop. For a tropical flair, drill a hole in the center of the bar's top big enough to hold the pole of a patio umbrella---station an umbrella stand on the ground to support the whole thing---and top the stools with Hawaiian-print fabric cushions. A word of caution: Don't use pressure-treated lumber for the bar counter because the weatherproofing process involves arsenic and renders the wood unsuitable for use around food or drink.

Portable Bar

If you want a portable bar that you can roll from room to room or from the kitchen to the patio and back, simply add wheels or casters to an outgrown baby-changing table. These handy tables already have shelves for supplies and a rim around the top to prevent your bottles and glassware from falling off in transit, and you can outfit one to fit your needs by adding any combination of dish racks, hooks, ice buckets and bottle holders that you like. You can even hang stemware holders from the bottom of the deepest shelf so that your wine glasses hang upside-down.

A History Of Gumboot Dancing

Forbidden to talk to each other, poor workers in South Africa's 19th-century mines invented a lively means of communicating using their heavy boots, known as gumboots, and other makeshift instruments. Gumboot dancing has evolved since the 19th century but remains true to its roots among the hard-working miners of the 1800s.

Nineteenth-Century Mines

Fetid water filled South Africa's 19th-century mines, so mining companies outfitted the enslaved miners with heavy black Wellington boots, also known as gumboots, to help keep them disease-free and working productively.

Miner Communication

Communication among the miners was forbidden by mining company bosses, so the miners developed a system to communicate with each other in the darkness of the mines. They stomped their boots, slapped their bare chests and shook their chains, producing a kind of Morse code.

Development of the Form

Mining company bosses initially disliked the gumboot dancing, but eventually they began to encourage it, allowing dance troupes to be formed and dance competitions to take place.

Persistence in the Culture

Gumboot dancing remains a part of South African working-class culture outside of the mines. Today's dancers go beyond the traditional steps, adding contemporary music and movement.

Performances Today

Visitors to South Africa can see gumboot dancing performances and come to appreciate this historic dance form. At the Victory Theatre in Johannesburg, for instance, they can see "Umoja," a permanently staged exhibit of gumboot dancing.

Food Ideas For A Large Baby Shower Party

Fruit on skewers with yogurt dip gives guests something to nibble on as they circulate.

Planning a menu for a baby shower can be a challenge, especially when the party will have a large number of guests. Baby Center recommends serving several finger foods at a buffet to encourage people to mingle and try different dishes. This also ensures that all the guests will find something that they like. Experts have several ideas for baby shower foods that will satisfy everyone, including the mother-to-be. Does this Spark an idea?

Mini-Quiche

Mini-quiche is an easy dish that chefs can prepare the night before and store in the fridge until the party. Baby Center recommends mini-quiche for baby showers, especially for afternoon affairs when snacks work best. Many types of quiche dishes are available, but chefs should keep in mind the guest of honor and any pregnancy-related food preferences.

Fruit and Vegetables

Having some healthy refreshments on hand is a smart idea, and chefs can style it on the plate to make it more attractive for a baby shower. Baby Center recommends celery sticks for a shower; chefs can include peanut butter or a substitute and raisins to make kids-style "ants on a log." Nick Junior, which is Nickelodeon for preschoolers, recommends a fruit kabob recipe that involves placing fruit bites on skewers with a side of yogurt for dipping. Having a variety of fruits and vegetables on various platters can satisfy a large party.

Diaper-Shaped Sandwiches

For a snack that will make guests laugh, Pregnancy Today recommends diaper-shaped sandwiches. Chefs simply make egg-salad sandwiches--or whatever flavor pleases the guest of honor--and cut the top corners off to give them the shapes of diapers. Refrigerated sandwiches are easier to cut. To finish the look, chefs snap gold safety pins to the top corners. To make them snack-size, chefs can cut the sandwiches into four parts first and use small safety pins. Having lots of mini-sandwiches instead of a few big sandwiches may help feed the large number of guests.

Alphabet Cookies

While cakes are traditional for baby showers, guests at a busy party will appreciate smaller sized desserts such as cookies. Using cookie cutters to cut cookies into alphabet letter shapes can enhance a baby-themed party. Family Corner website recommends cinnamon sugar cookies, but chefs can make several batches of different kinds of cookies and lay them on plates for guests to sample as they mingle.

Birthday Trip Ideas

Hit the road for a birthday you'll always remember.

Birthdays are a reason to celebrate. Instead of purchasing a gift for a loved one on her birthday, give her an experience. Whether you're part of a couple or a family, a birthday trip provides the opportunity to celebrate a birthday while forming memories that will last a lifetime.

Beachside Bliss

Lay back in beach chairs for a relaxing birthday trip.

During the summer months, it's hard to beat a trip to the beach. Whether you stay at an all-inclusive resort or a cottage on the shore, the ocean provides a stunningly beautiful backdrop for a birthday celebration. Couples looking for a relaxing weekend can lay in the sun, take a dip in the waves and stroll along the sandy beach. Many oceanside communities feature a booming nightlife, which is perfect for those looking to have a more energetic birthday bash.

Vineyard Adventure

Enjoy a glass of wine in a vineyard.

Couples who enjoy good wine and delicious food can celebrate a birthday with a trip to a vineyard. From Long Island, New York, to Napa Valley, California, there are many vineyards that invite guests to tour their grounds and taste their wines. Enjoy a leisurely walk through the vineyard, see how their wines are produced and sample a selection of wines. Areas riddled with vineyards and wineries often also boast gourmet food. Follow the vineyard exploration with a scrumptious dinner.

Leaf Peeping

Go for a walk to look at the leaves.

When summer fades to fall, the leaves develop a vitality of their own. For an autumn birthday trip, head to the northeast to take in the gorgeous sight of New England's brilliantly colored foliage. After a home-cooked meal at a bed and breakfast, hit the road to take a peek at the leaves. Make sure to take pictures of the brilliant reds, bold oranges and blazing yellows that fill the trees.

Ski Trip

Take in the beauty of the mountains on your birthday.

For a wintertime birthday adventure, outdoor lovers can hit the slopes. A trip to Colorado or Vermont in the winter provides a cold yet exciting way to spend a birthday. Spend the day skiing or snowboarding, while taking in the awe-inspiring views from the top of the mountain. Those who don't ski can participate in other winter activities, such as skating or snow-shoeing, or can relax in the lodge. Warm up with a delicious dinner and hot chocolate.

About Bingo Daubers

Even if you have never played the game, you are familiar with the exhilaration that comes with the shouted word "Bingo!" And if you are a regular or avid Bingo player, then you know the best way to hear that word coming out of your mouth is to have a reliable Bingo dauber that helps you work quickly and efficiently toward that elusive straight line.

History

Bingo was originally called "Beano" and played at country fairs. Players would mark their cards with beans and whoever got a straight line of numbers would shout "Beano!" and receive a small prize. The game was renamed Bingo after a few years, and Catholic priests began to use it as a means to raise church funds. As the game became increasingly popular and players began to play multiple cards at once, Bingo daubers came into use to make marking off the numbers quicker and easier.

Function

Bingo daubers are used to mark numbers that have been called in the course of a Bingo game. They make a round, distinct circle that mimics the form of a Bingo chip. If the cards are laminated, then the marks can be wiped off so that they cards may be reused. If they are not, the dauber permanently marks the card.

Features

Bingo daubers have a large, round ink pad at one end. They are self inking and tend to be shaped to fit the hand for maximum comfort, since avid Bingo players may need to mark 20 to 40 cards in the space of about 30 seconds. They are often refillable and have many different colors of ink.

Benefits

A Bingo dauber is far more efficient than marking your Bingo card with chips. Chips can be dislodged or knocked off, wasting your entire game. Also, placing chips in an orderly fashion on your card is much more time consuming that making a mark with a dauber, and people who use chips generally cannot play as many cards at once.

Types

Ink daubers come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Fun daubers may be shaped like Uncle Sam, famous wrestlers or Santa Claus. There are also a wide variety of daubers that are ergonomic and specifically formed to make holding them as easy on the hands as possible. Many older Bingo players like this type of dauber because it is easier on arthritic hands.

Considerations

If you are going to use a Bingo dauber, make sure that the rules of your local Bingo hall allow it. If they do not, you will probably have to forfeit your prize money if you win and may have to pay a fine for the ruined cards. Other halls only allow certain types of daubers in an effort to keep the playing field even, so be sure that yours conforms to the requirements before you begin a game.

About Authentic Hawaiian Clothing

About Authentic Hawaiian Clothing

Hawaii is a state rich in cultural heritage and unique history. The islands were originally inhabited by the Polynesians and have been home to many others since including Tahitian immigrants and Europeans. Because of the vast differences in the many people to have lived in Hawaii, true Hawaiian clothing has undergone several changes and evolutions. Today, modern Hawaiian clothing is known mostly for its comfort in high temperatures and for brightly colored patterns and designs.

Plants

Hawaiian natives originally wore loincloths and skirts made of plants, very similar to today's hula skirts. Neither men nor women wore clothes above the waist until missionaries arrived on the islands and encouraged the covering of women's breasts.

Palakas

During the late nineteenth century Hawaii was home to many plantations. Plantation workers often wore denim shirts bearing blue and white checkered design called "palakas" along with denim pants. This outfit was so common in that in 1930 it was often referred to as the official uniform of Hawaii.

Hawaiian Design

The brightly colored prints commonly associated with Hawaiian shirts and clothing were not created until the middle of the 1930s when a Hawaiian clothing manufacturer has an artist hand paint several floral designs.

Summer Casual

A 1947 decision by the Honolulu Board of Supervisors encourages city employees to combat hot Hawaiian summers by wearing Hawaiian shirts to work from June through October.

Labeling

Hawaiian shirts and clothing became so popular in the 1950s that Hawaiian manufacturers began placing a "Made in Hawaii" label in their shirts to distinguish them from the many imitations on the market.

Diy Tablecloths

Make a custom tablecloth to fit any table.

When it comes to making your own home accessories, tablecloths are one of the easiest items to make yourself. Anyone who can handle a pair of scissors and sew a straight stitch on a sewing machine can easily create a tablecloth in one day. The biggest challenge most people encounter when making a tablecloth lies in determining the proper size to cover your table. Fortunately, you can use a simple formula to ensure that your homemade tablecloth fits perfectly. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the length and width of your table with a measuring tape.

2. Hold the end of the measuring tape against the edge of the table and measure down to the point where you want the hem of the tablecloth to rest. Multiply this number by two. For example, if the measurement is 18 inches, your final number is 36.

3. Add the final number from Step 2 to the length and width measurements from step one. For example, if your table is 20 inches in length by 40 inches in width, you would end up with the measurements 56 inches and 76 inches.

4. Add 2 inches to the final measurements from Step 3, to add seam allowances to your table. In our example, the measurements become 58 inches and 78 inches.

5. Cut a piece of fabric using the measurements from Step 4.

6. Fold the edges of the tablecloth under 1/2 inch and iron the fold to set a crease.

7. Fold the edges under another 1/2 inch and iron the new fold. This hides the raw edge of the fabric to create a neat, clean edge.

8. Sew along the sides of the tablecloth with a sewing machine, keeping the needle approximately 3/8 inch away from the outer edge.

Do It Yourself Party Invitation

While there are many styles of party invitations on the racks at card shops, it's sometimes hard to find just the right one that reflects your personality and the theme of your event. Whether it's a birthday, weekend cocktails, a dinner party or a backyard barbecue, sometimes the best--and most memorable--solution is to design the invitations yourself. Does this Spark an idea?

Materials

Card stock and matching envelopes in a rainbow of colors are available at craft and stationery shops as well as online through companies such as PaperSource. The A-7 size provides the most versatility for artwork, comes in a fold-over format or flat, and feeds easily through home printers. If you're affixing photographs or fabric, rubber cement is recommended rather than paste, white glue or spray-on fixatives because it comes off easily if you accidentally use too much. To trim images, use a paper-cutter. Dimensional art can be purchased at crafts stores or online scrapbooking websites. Unless you're good at calligraphy--and only doing a few cards--type and print out your invitation messages on the computer in a font that matches the mood of the event. Any writing or printing should be done on the card before it is adorned with photos or dimensional art.

Photo Cards

Birthdays, anniversaries, reunions and new homes lend themselves especially well to invitations with photos on the front. For milestone events such as a 60th birthday or a silver/gold wedding anniversary, find pictures of the guests of honor from when they were toddlers, teens or newly married, and make enough copies that you can affix to the front of each card.

An invitation to a reunion could be an old photograph of the school or a mini collage made from scanned yearbook pages--including senior headshots of the invited guests. An alternative spin would be to scan one of the inside covers of the yearbook that's full of best wishes; reproduce copies on cream colored card stock, then cut into it rectangles to fit the front of the invitations.

A housewarming party invitation can be a photo of your new address--which will also help your guests be able to locate it the day of the event--or a joke photo of a dilapidated barn, outhouse or abandoned shack.

Ticket To Adventure

Use brightly colored card stock to create 2-inch-by-4-inch "Admit One" ticket stubs containing the date, time and location. Put numbers on the tickets so they can be used for surprise drawings during the party.

If you're doing an Oscar-themed evening, go glam with silver and gold glitter on black card stock with a white interior for the message. Go to film websites such as the Internet Movie Database to capture jpeg images of celebrities and scenes from new releases and classic films and use these in a collage along with dimensional art of spotlights, cameras and limos.

Affix travel postcards to the front of your invitations that relate to the theme of your party (tropical locales, for example, for a backyard swim party or luau).

Create trifold "airline ticket" invitations that display the destination, the arrival time, and permissible "carryons" such as wine, dessert or game gear.

Some More Creative Spins

If you're not a good artist, don't despair. There are dozens of Internet sites that allow you to upload free clip-art images as well as photographs to decorate the front of your cards. You also might want to go trolling for vintage maps that you can reproduce on parchment paper along with a big red "x" that marks the spot for fun and frivolity.

If you're doing invitations for a book-club meeting, scan copies of some of your favorite book covers and cut them up so that each recipient gets a different looking invitation.

For foodies who love to throw dinner parties, design the outside cover like an elegant restaurant menu; on the inside, display the courses that are going to be served.

A murder-mystery party calls for some intrigue. Fashion your invitation after a ransom note cut from colorful magazine letters. Another spin is to create some fake Scotland Yard stationery and compose a letter requesting each guest's assistance in solving a crime. The suspects, the letter states, will all be assembled at a specific date and time.

Gift wrapping paper makes a nice "matte" for affixing a photograph to a card. Fabric and ribbon work well, too, although you should do a test piece first to make sure that the rubber cement doesn't soak through.

Decorating Ideas For Engagement Party

Decorating Ideas for Engagement Party

Many couples celebrate their impending nuptials by throwing an engagement party. The purpose of this party is to formally announce the engagement of the couple. Some brides and grooms host their own engagement party while others have family members or close friends that host the party for the couple. Decorations for the party can range from formal to very casual, depending on tastes, the budget and location of the engagement party. Overall, however, engagement parties are usually less formal than a wedding reception. Does this Spark an idea?

Banners and balloons

Balloons are a versatile decorating tool. Inexpensive and fun, they can be used formally or informally. Try tying bunches of balloons to the gate or porch of the engagement party venue (usually someone's home). Alternately, create a balloon arch for the newly engaged couple to walk through when they enter the party. Also, hang a banner announcing the engagement, or one that simply states, "Congratulations!"

Timeline or collage

A fun decoration to display at an engagement party is a photo collage or timeline that incorporates photos of the couple. Timelines can be used to compare the lives of the two lovers (they are particularly funny when there is a large age gap). Collages are a bit easier to design, because you don't have to figure out specific dates. Use photos or copies of photos, butcher paper and scrapbooking templates, stickers, markers and other artistic tools to create your timeline or collage. Hang it on a large wall, inside or outside.

Touches of romance

No engagement party is complete without small touches of romance. Try purchasing balloons in the shape of hearts. Set candles around everywhere, or create luminaries by placing votive candles anchored in sand inside of small luminary bags. Strings of white twinkling lights wrapped around trees add a romantic touch to a garden party, as do paper lanterns. Fresh roses in vases are very romantic and will fill your venue with a luscious scent. Choose flowers, balloons and other decorations in the colors of the upcoming wedding.

Gardening Theme Desserts For Kids

Transform a plate of cupcakes into a sweet vegetable garden.

While cooking and baking generally require adult supervision, even young children can use frosting, candies and other edible materials to help with the decorating. Gardening-themed desserts are no exception. Talk to the children about unfamiliar flowers, vegetables and common garden creatures as you prepare the dessert to add a learning element to the activity. Does this Spark an idea?

Flower Box Cake

Help children create a cake that resembles a flower-box planter with edible flowers. A loaf cake can serve as the base, but you can also cut a larger rectangular cake into halves or thirds and stack the pieces to create the shape of a planter. Kids can smooth icing over the top and sides of the cake and gently press square or rectangular cookies onto the sides of the cake to form the walls of the planter. Use crushed graham crackers, chocolate cookies or chocolate icing on the top of the cake to mimic potting soil. Let children fashion flowers out of crispy rice-cereal treats tinted with a few drops of food coloring. Add the food coloring to the melted marshmallows just before you mix in the cereal and press the mixture into a pan. Once the mixture cools, use flower-shaped cookie cutters to create the blooms, and gently insert a wooden skewer into the bottom of each flower to serve as a stem.

Vegetable Garden Cupcakes

Let children recreate their favorite vegetables in candy form on garden cupcakes. Older children or adults can prepare the cupcakes by frosting them with chocolate frosting and dipping the frosted part of the cupcake into a bowl of crushed chocolate cookies. This gives each cupcake the appearance of rich garden soil. Let children shape colored taffy candies into vegetables such as carrots, radishes or pea pods to decorate the cupcakes. You can also sprinkle candy-covered sunflower seeds on the cupcakes for a quick decoration. Serve the cupcakes on a large platter or place each one in a small, clean flower pot.

Garden Creature Candies

Children can form handmade candies into garden bug shapes. Start with a simple truffle recipe and show the children form the truffles into balls to create the bodies of ladybugs, bees, beetles or spiders. Form smaller balls into the creatures' heads. Dip each truffle into melted candy coating. Meltable candy wafers are available in a variety of colors at craft stores and the cake decorating aisle of many big-box stores. Use sliced almonds to create bee's wings or pieces of shoestring licorice for spider legs. Provide several types of candy for the children to attach with melted chocolate or candy coating to decorate their garden creatures.

Cool Ways To Dye Your Hair

Hair Dye Samples

When you're craving a little change in your look, you might turn to dyeing your hair. But using just one color throughout your entire hair will often result in a flat and lifeless appearance. Create some dimension, depth and interest in your hair by using fun colors and advanced coloring methods to dye some life into your hair. Does this Spark an idea?

Colorful Spikes

If you're a fearless punk who likes to make a statement with his hair by wearing a spiked Mohawk everyday, consider dyeing each spike a different color. First, analyze the number of spikes you wear in your Mohawk, and then choose a color for each spike. For example, if you wear three spikes in your Mohawk, paint the first one blue, the second pink and the last purple. If you have light blonde hair, simply follow the directions on the dye to apply the color to your spikes. However, if you have dark blonde to black hair, you'll need to bleach your spikes before dyeing.

Two-toned Hair

Are you stuck between two color choices when it comes to dyeing your hair? If so, mimic Drew Barrymore and choose both. In September of 2009, Drew Barrymore debuted blonde locks throughout her hair with just the tips dyed black. Of course, you don't have to choose these exact colors; this look will work with practically any color combination of your liking. Dye your entire head the lighter color; then simply dye your tips the darker color. Because this look requires great accuracy, consider making a visit to your hairstylist for a precise look.

Simple and Sexy

Create a cool and sexy look by using both highlights and lowlights. Many women are proficient when it comes to highlights, but are clueless when it comes to lowlights. The process is actually fairly simple. Highlight the sections that you want to add dimension and a visual "lift" and lowlight the sections that you want to look darker and fuller. As a rule of thumb, your highlight color should be three shades lighter than your overall hair color, while your lowlight should be no more than three shades deeper than your overall hair color.

Disney World Withatoddler Tips

With four parks, the Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney's Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom, visiting Walt Disney World can be a hectic vacation for those with small children. However, there are simple things that can be done that can be done to make the vacation more enjoyable for yourself and your toddler.

Bring Things to Occupy a Toddler

Waiting in line is hard for some adults and can be horrible for a small child. It's easy to pack small activities to keep a toddler busy during a wait. Pipe cleaners in various colors can be made into various animals or objects. Small bubbles will fit easily in a fanny pack, or even a small pad of paper and a pen will keep a toddler entertained during a wait.

Take Advantage of Disney's Child Swap

The rides at Walt Disney World offer a child swap for parents. If parents want to ride a ride that isn't appropriate for a toddler, one parent can wait with the child while the other rides. Once that parent is finished, the parents simply switch places. This feature allows both parents to enjoy the ride without having to wait in line twice.

Make Use of the Play Areas

Throughout the four parks are play areas geared for toddlers. For example, at the exit of Splash Mountain in the Magic Kingdom, there's a toddler play area. Part of the group can enjoy the ride, and someone can sit with the toddler in the play area. At the Magic Kingdom, there is also a Winnie the Pooh play area in Fastasyland and a Donald Duck play area in Toon Town. Located in Disney's Hollywood Studios is the Honey I Shrunk the Kids play area, and the Animal Kingdom has the Boneyard Playground.

Toddlers and Epcot

Parents may think they should avoid the World Showcase at Epcot for fear their toddler will be bored. However, each "country" has a Kidcot Fun Stop designed to keep little ones busy. At each Kidcot Fun Stop, the child gets to do a free art project. Each country will also stamp a play passport for your toddler. If all of the entire World Showcase is visited, the toddler will have stamps from all the various "worlds" and get a free poster at the last stop.

50s Theme Bridal Shower

Plan your bridal shower around 50s-themed images.

The 1950s was a decade when women stayed at home as housewives after working during the war and teens listened and danced to Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis and hung out in diners. These images of the 50s, the era of the "Baby Boomers," can help give you ideas for planning your 50s-themed bridal shower for everything from the invitations to the food.

Invitations

Email and text messaging did not exist in the 1950s so start your 50s theme bridal shower right by only sending invitations by mail or giving them to friends in person. Choose a 1950s design for your invitation, such as one with a housewife from the 50s or a girl in a poodle skirt. Include all the necessary information and mention the theme of the shower. You can even ask your guests to come dressed in a 1950s outfit.

Decorations

Decorate your bridal shower in colors that were often used in the 1950s to get the look and feel of that era. Use pastel colors such as pink, aqua, peach and yellow as well as striking colors like turquoise, chartreuse and flamingo pink. Use plates, tea cups, napkins, tablecloths, place mats, centerpieces, streamers and balloons in a combination of any of these colors as part of your decorations.

Food and Drinks

Create an appetizer tray with celery filled with cream cheese, grapes and fruit kabobs and fill bowls with Chex Mix, a signature snack of the 50s. Foods that were often served during the 1950s that you can serve in a bridal shower are seafood cocktail, guacamole or cheese dip with chips and crackers and deviled ham and mushroom canapes. Other foods popular during the 1950s were tuna noodle and green bean casseroles, hot cheese puffs, miniature pizzas, deviled eggs and chicken pot pie. Butter cookies, fruit cups, melon balls and sherbet, ice cream with cherries, chiffon pie and baked Alaska are some dessert ideas. For beverages, guests can drink Tang orange juice, fruit punch, milkshakes, iced tea, coffee, ginger ale and soda -- especially soda in glass bottles if they're available.

Giveaways

Give your guests a bag of hair rollers, a vintage cookbook or a recipe that was popular during the 1950s with all the necessary ingredients. Give away aprons, 50s-themed refrigerator magnets, recipe boxes, cupcakes in pastel colors or cookies shaped like nostalgic items such as jukeboxes, poodle skirts or 1950s-style double-slot toasters and refrigerators. Other giveaways include bags of jelly beans in pastel colors, homemade jam and "Candy Buttons," which are pastel colored candy dots on paper.

Facts About Teddy Bear Hamsters

Teddy bear hamsters are a popular pet for both children and adults. They are low-maintenance critters, which means caring for them is easy and affordable. In addition, they are kind pets that love to play and interact with their owners.

Appearance

The major difference you'll notice between a regular hamster (called the Syrian or Golden hamster) and the teddy bear hamster is that the teddy bear hamster has much longer hair. Because of their flowing manes, they are often referred to as "fancy hamsters" or "angora hamsters." On average, they are four to six inches in length and the females are usually larger than the males (though the males do have longer hair).

Nocturnal

Teddy bear hamsters are nocturnal, meaning they sleep throughout the day and become active once night falls. For this reason, many pet owners prefer to keep their teddy bear hamsters in a room where nobody sleeps. They tend to be noisy while playing, eating and walking around their cages.

Cleaning

Like cats, teddy bear hamsters do not require baths. They bathe themselves with their tongues, hands and feet. However, if your teddy bear hamster becomes very dirty or cannot clean itself, you can wipe it with a damp washcloth or chemical/scent-free baby wipes. Also, it's a good idea to comb your hamster's hair on a regular basis and make sure it gets a lot of play time so its nails stay naturally trimmed.

Personality

Teddy bear hamster are generally happy animals who are low maintenance and easy to care for. Occasionally, they can be crabby. If your hamster acts mean, it usually just wants some time alone. They prefer not to be held and thrive when they live alone. In fact, it is strongly advised not to put two teddy bear hamsters into one cage.

Life span

Teddy bear hamsters live, on average, for two to three years as long as they are treated and cared for appropriately. To ensure that they live the average life span, feed them fresh food.

Fun Birthday Cake Ideas

Creating a fun birthday cake for someone special takes just a little investigation and creativity. Inquiring about the birthday person's interests and passions is one way to find out what the best cake would be. You can either bake the cake yourself or work with a baker to create a birthday cake that's not only fun but also meaningful. Use these ideas as a jumping-off point for your own imagination. Does this Spark an idea?

The Sports Enthusiast Cake

For the soccer, football, baseball or even NASCAR fan, add color to the cake mix in the favorite team's official colors. Have your baker create a sports field complete with little models of the players. If the birthday guy is a swimmer, decorate the cake like a long blue pool with lanes. You can cut the cake into numerous shapes, such as a bicycle or bowling ball---and ribbons or trophies would add a nice touch. For the outdoor sports enthusiast, consider using a nature scene. If he's a fly fishing enthusiast, use icing to create a rambling stream with trees and have a model fly fisherman standing in the middle of the water. This same idea could be extended to other outdoor sports like hunting, ice skating and skiing.

The Retail Enthusiast Cake

Make a logo-themed cake out of the birthday girl's favorite brands like Louis Vuitton, Chanel or Fendi. Take a picture of her favorite logo and have the cake maker replicate it with icing. For specific brands, you could honor their signature pieces, such as Louis Vuitton and its iconic luxury luggage. A square cake could easily be transformed into a train case, handbag, or storefront.

The Cartoon or Video Game Cake

From Sponge Bob to Elmo to Aladdin, there are numerous characters that can be created for the person who is a fan of cartoons. Bright colors and crazy graphics can combine to make a fun birthday cake. Some of the best cake artists are able to create life-like, three dimensional characters out of cake instead of the simple flat sheet pan cakes.

Video game players may appreciate a cake made out of their favorite character. A game like The Sims is perfect for translating into a creative cake. Even a holiday-themed character like Frosty the Snowman would be a fun birthday cake for a wintertime birthday. Before you spend the money to have a birthday cake made out of a specific character, be sure to see examples of the baker's previous work.

The Artwork Cake

Order an artwork cake for the person who loves a certain painter, sculptor or painting. A fan of Rodin's famous "The Thinker" would be thrilled to see it molded from cake. Likewise, you could have a Monet painting like "Water Lilies" recreated on a large sheet pan cake.

The Cupcake Cake

Hire a baker to create a cupcake cake. The small cakes will be presented on a tall, multi-tiered stand so party goers can choose their own individual cupcakes. These cakes can be colored to any theme and almost any flavor. You could even put lit sparklers in the cupcakes for extra drama.

Free Activities In Oahu Hawaii

The view from the top of Diamond Head Crater is memorable.

Your vacation to Oahu does not have to be an expensive affair. Yes, you may want to splurge on a luau or one of the Polynesian shows at the various hotels but there are plenty of activities that are free or inexpensive. The beaches are free all around the island, even in front of major hotels. If you are looking for activities that don't require some sort of transportation, then look no further than the resort area of Waikiki.

Kapiolani Park

Kapiolani Park is an open green space on the eastern end of Waikiki. Parts of it front the ocean at Queen's Beach and the rest of the 500 acres stretch inland along Kapahulu Ave. Named for King Kalakaua's beloved Queen, this park is home to the Waikiki Aquarium and the Honolulu Zoo. While these two venues charge admission, the Waikiki Shell bandstand offers free concerts and on Sundays local artists put on a show along the outside of the zoo fence. Jog the three miles of trails that work their way through the park, take a picnic lunch and dine under the palm trees and then stick around for a sunset at the beach.

Diamond Head State Monument

Diamond Head Crater sits on the eastern end of Waikiki and has become the symbol of one of the most famous beaches on the planet. While it is impressive from the outside the view from the top of the crater is an exceptional delight. It will take you a bit of effort to get up to the top of the 760 foot rim. The moderately rated hiking trail takes a switchback route up the inside of the crater through tunnels and up stairs carved into the lava rock. At the end of the eight tenths of a mile hike, you will find yourself standing at the very top of Waikiki. It will cost you $1--as of 2010--to get into the park, but the hike up is free.

Kuhio Beach Hula Show

Four times a week, Hawaiian performers gather on Kuhio Beach in Waikiki near the Duke Kahanamoku statue to give a free show. Wander down to the sands to hear the haunting sound of the conch shell as it welcomes the sunset. Torches are lit and the Hawaiian hula is performed. Bring a beach mat and a picnic dinner and take in some ancient Hawaiian culture. No one will think you are out of place if you stand up and try to dance a bit of the hula on your own. After the free show, take a walk along the sands of Waikiki Beach.

Dltk Crafts For Kids

Make an igloo out of marshmallows.

DLTK is a website started by a wife and mother of two girls who used the first initial of each person in the family to come up with the site name. It's founder, Leanne, watched the site grow and become a popular destination for web surfers looking to get ideas for arts and crafts for their kids. With many options ranging from educational crafts to religious activities, this site contains enough ideas to last any parent until the kids go off to college. Some of their crafts have become quite popular and appear on their top activities pages.

Handprint Craft Poems

DLTK suggests a creative way for children to make a poem for friends and family. The handprint is always a popular reminder of how small the little ones once were. Combining handprints with a child's poetry will preserve a special memory in a parent's heart for years to come.

Using a paper plate, the child dips his hand in a shallow pan of finger paint and makes an imprint in the center of the paper plate. The plate should be left alone to dry completely to avoid mess and smearing.

The child then writes or copies a poem onto the back of the plate and presents it to parents or a friend. The child can also add a colorful ribbon to the plate or decorate the outer edge.

Leaf Prints

Taking a walk through the woods on a fall afternoon is a great way to spend time with your child. It is also a good time for kids to collect leaves for a leaf print craft, according to DLTK-Holidays.com.

Allow the children to collect several different types of leaves that have fallen and are in good condition. Make the collecting educational by teaching the child the names of the trees that shed the leaves.

To complete the leaf print craft, the child will need the leaves, wax paper, an iron and ironing board. Once the leaves are collected, the child can arrange them on a large piece of wax paper any way that he sees fit. Use half of the wax paper to layout the leaves and fold the other half on top of the leaves to seal them in.

Place the folded paper with leaves in place on an ironing board and heat the iron to medium heat. Parents may have to do the ironing for young children and should supervise all ages. Press the wax paper onto the leaves. This will flatten them and seal them in the wax where they will remain preserved for viewing.

Edible Igloo

Kids can make an edible craft igloo using a polystyrene foam tray and cup, mini marshmallows, and white icing, according to DLTK-Holidays.com.

Secure the rim of a short, wide polystyrene cup to the surface of a white polystyrene tray using a smear of white icing of your choosing. Slather icing all over the outside of the cup and begin adding rows of mini marshmallows (the white ones) until the entire cup is covered. Stack more mini marshmallows to one side to form the entrance to your edible igloo.

Of course the foam can't be eaten, but this craft still makes a tasty snack for those who wish to pick off the marshmallows and frosting.

Hawaiian Cocktail Drinks

Most Hawaiian cocktails have fruit juice in them.

Hawaii is known for its refreshing cocktails that frequently contain one of more of the fruits associated with Hawaii. Hawaiians often mix spirits, like rum and vodka, and garnish their drinks with a whimsical, paper umbrella. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Mai Tai Cocktails

The mai tai is the most ordered cocktail in Hawaii. The conventional mai tai recipe includes light and dark rum mixed with equal parts of orange juice, pineapple juice, sweet and sour mix and about one quarter as much orgeat syrup. A fancier version calls for the two rum types, Amaretto, Cointreau, orange and pineapple juice and a maraschino cherry-vanilla puree made by pureeing the stemmed cherries and their juice with vanilla bean seeds or pure vanilla extract.

Coladas

Another cocktail favorite in Hawaii is the pina colada, a rich mixture of sweetened coconut cream, pineapple juice and rum. This cocktail inspired the tarter key lime colada, a combination of vanilla rum, key lime cream liqueur, pina colada mix and pineapple juice. A less-sweet and lower-calorie colada combines coconut rum, mango vodka, orange and pineapple juice and fresh coconut milk. Another variation on the pina colada is the lava flow cocktail. Coconut rum, light rum, fresh banana, pineapple juice and coconut cream are mixed in a blender. After the concoction is poured into a large, stemmed, cocktail glass, pureed strawberries are poured on the top, creating an eruption effect that gave the drink its name. A lighter version of the cocktail mixes fresh strawberries with the other ingredients and omits the pureed topping.

Hawaiian Martinis

A conventional Hawaiian martini combines fresh pineapple with regular vodka, vanilla vodka and coconut rum in a blender. When the pineapple is pulverized, the drink is served in a martini glass and garnished with a pineapple spear. Other fruit-based martinis favored in Hawaii include the orange daiquiri martini, a mixture of rum, Triple Sec and orange juice, and the basil strawberry martini, a combination of muddled fresh basil and strawberries topped with vodka.

Other Popular Hawaiian Drinks

Chi chis are pina coladas made with vodka instead of rum. The Hawaiian-inspired mango mojito uses pureed mango in place of the conventional lime juice, but keeps the rum and fresh mint. To make a tropical style margarita, combine white tequila with lime juice and pure agave nectar.

Girl Scout Hawaiian Luau Camp Ideas

A luau camp is fun and educational for Girl Scouts.

When considering a luau camp for your scout troop, many things must be taken into account. Since the Girl Scout levels range from Daisies at kindergarten and first grade to Ambassadors in the 11th and 12th grades, you will want to arrange activities to be appropriate for the age level of the troop. However, no matter the age level, if you plan appropriately you can create a fun and exciting luau experience that will also allow the scouts opportunities to earn their badges and learn important values.

Activities

Hula hoops and hula dancing are musts for a luau and these activities are appropriate for all ages. If possible, find a counselor who is good at both or who can teach the girls some of the basics. If you can be near a beach or fill some plastic pools with sand, consider a sandcastle building contest. Other fun activities that can span all age groups of girl scouts include volleyball or dodge ball with beach balls and a limbo contest.

Younger scouts can also earn career badges by learning about different careers that involve water, like marine biology and oceanography, or earn sports and games badges by playing water related games such as Marco Polo if you are near a pool. Older girls can earn photography badges by photographing the nearby flowers or nature scenes or earn an Architectural and Environmental Design badge by making kites and learning what keeps them aloft.

Snacks

Fun luau snacks can include tropical fruits, hot dogs, fruit punch to drink and ice cream to help cool off a warm day. Pineapples, oranges, mangoes, bananas and coconuts are just some of the fruits that can provide healthy snacks for scouts, and the luau theme can be further upheld by allowing girls to have little paper umbrellas in their fruit punch. Ice cream, sherbet or Popsicles with fruit flavors can round out the snack options to provide a cool treat.

Crafts

Crafts can also help scouts earn badges, and they should allow the scouts to enjoy themselves while keeping to the luau theme. For instance, scouts can earn an Art to Wear badge by decorating plain T-shirts with inspiring messages in the luau theme. Scouts can also earn a Desktop Publishing badge by designing the menu for the luau and including fun facts about each item. The scouts can also obtain an Artistic Crafts badge by helping make some of the decorations for the luau, such as flower banners or paper flowers and fish to decorate tables and walls.

Decorations

Decorations can either be made, purchased or found. You can hang flower garlands across or between tables or over doorways. Coconuts and shells can be arranged into centerpieces, and shells can also be glued to clear photo frames to make decorative borders. Raffia table skirts can enhance the luau atmosphere and people can be decorated with leis and grass skirts to complete the look.
