Elegant Party Decoration Ideas
Hosting an elegant party requires decorations to set the mood. Avoid overly bright and and busy decor. The decorations should provide a backdrop to good food and good conversation and the event shouldn't revolve around the decor. Any party can be elegant regardless if its a dinner party, tea in the garden or a brunch. Use simple elements to bring understated beauty to your next event. Does this Spark an idea?
Colors
Choose three colors to use in your decorating scheme. A neutral such as black, white or cream and a bold color such as red, navy or green will coordinate together well. The third color will encompass your dinner ware and serving dishes--silver, gold, or transparent glass or crystal.
A black tablecloth with silver-rimmed white plates and white napkins is a striking combination. Add bright red flowers to the centerpiece vases and red napkin rings for a modern and elegant appearance.
An elegant, yet relaxed, event such as an afternoon party or lunch event uses softer colors. Creams and pastels with glass-serving bowls lighten the mood while remaining refined. Use a light-colored tablecloth with pastel napkins. Porcelain dishes and napkin rings add to the relaxed feel of the party.
Lighting
Use lighting to control the mood of your event. Bright lights make an event seem more casual than dim. Soften daytime events with sheer curtains that diffuse the light coming into the room. Outdoors, weave tulle or other sheer material through the top of a pergola.
In the evening, candles offer the most elegant lighting choice. Place votive candles along the table, spacing them on either side in front of each guest. Dim the light further with tinted glass votive holders. Floating candles can be used as a centerpiece or in conjunction with flower centerpieces on long table. Place a narrow and shallow rectangular bowl along the center of the table and fill with water. Float candles in the water and light. Set your flower arrangements on either ends of the bowl.
Themes
A theme helps pull together an entertaining plan, but avoid going overboard with it. A few key elements go much further. Stick with your color plan and use a neutral backdrop to make the few theme-specific items pop.
For an Oriental theme, dress the tables in white and black. Square plates and dishes carry the theme in an understated way. Place chopsticks in pretty paper or fabric pouches by each setting. Avoid festooning the room with bright-colored paper lanterns and Asian-style fans.
Themes that have a single simple element work well too. A butterfly theme is perfect for a spring daytime soiree. Butterfly picks in the flower arrangement and delicate butterfly napkin rings will carry the theme in an elegant way. Use a background of soft pastels or ivory to carry this theme successfully.
