Graduation is an important time in a teen's life. A graduation party is both a celebration of an important accomplishment and a moment of transition from teenager to adult. Here are some ideas to ensure that your graduation party is the best it can be.
Themes
Always choose a theme for your party. A theme will make it easy for you to coordinate all of the aspects of your party, from decorations to food to activities, into a unified whole. For your graduation party, you could choose a theme that focuses on celebrating the graduate, such as a "You're a Star" theme. Or you could have an open house or an all-night party to allow guests to come and go when they like (and have time to get to all the other graduation parties that are happening at the same time). Outdoor themes, such as pool parties and luaus, are often popular choices for graduation parties, since they usually take place in May or June. You could also use the graduation year as inspiration for your theme.
Food
Keep your food simple and easy. Most high school seniors usually don't like to sample lots of unfamiliar foods; they'll be happiest if you stick to familiar favorites. Grilled hot dogs and hamburgers are perfect for an outdoor party; pizza is easy for an all-night party. Think about your theme when you plan your menu; for a luau-themed party, grilled pineapple and beef satay will be easy and delicious.
Also remember while planning your menu that a graduation party is a celebration. A good dessert is essential. Cake is traditional, but any celebratory dessert that goes well with your theme will be good. You could also use non-alcoholic sparkling apple cider served in plastic champagne glasses if you want to toast the graduates.
Activities
Graduation is a bittersweet time for seniors. On the one hand, they are celebrating the accomplishment of finishing high school. On the other hand, they are often sad about leaving their friends and their teen years to enter the world of college and adulthood. For this reason, it's good to include time for reflection and encouragement as well as fun activities into your schedule of games and events. In addition to fun, active games that all teens enjoy, such as a limbo contest for a luau party, consider more reflective activities that will encourage and surprise graduates. For example, you could set up a video camera and have guests record a few thoughts, favorite memories, or words of advice or encouragement for the graduate to keep. You could also schedule time during the evening for guests to offer toasts, memories or advice. Or you could set up a scrapbook with space for guests to write messages to the graduate. Any of these activities will ensure that your graduation party will be not just a fun celebration but a treasured memory for your graduate.
