Adults who did not graduate from high school can earn a GED.
The General Educational Development program is provided by the American Council on Education to allow adults who did not complete high school to earn their diploma. To earn the GED, a person must pass a test on a series of five on different subjects -- writing, reading, social studies, math and science. To help students prepare for the exam, many community colleges, school districts, community centers and other public agencies provide courses. The courses and the test are available in Spanish and French in addition to English. Residents of Middlesex County have a number of options available to prepare for the GED.
Perth Amboy Adult Education Center
The Perth Amboy Adult Education Center is an official testing site for the GED exam. Under contract with the Office of Career and Technical Education, the Adult Education Center not only administers the test but also offers courses to help people prepare for the GED. The test is administered twice each month, and the training and test preparation courses are offered on a flexible schedule by the center. The classes can be taken in English or Spanish during the day or evening.

Community Learning Center at Roosevelt
The Middlesex County Community Learning Center at Roosevelt is available to residents of the county who are looking to improve their job skills or literacy skills as they seek to upgrade their employment. The center has courses in English, computers, citizenship preparation and GED. The courses include a mathematics class, a course in essay writing and another in reading strategies. The GED exam is offered monthly at the Community Learning Center. The courses are available through contacting the counselors at the center directly.

East Brunswick Adult and Community Education
Offered at East Brunswick High School twice a month, the cities Adult and Community Education department helps people prepare to take and pass the GED examination. As the tests are designed to measure academic knowledge compared to traditional high school graduates, this program teaches the same skills that are taught in the high school. The instructors teach skills but also focus on helping people learn study on their own so they will be prepared to take the test and do well in other areas of life. Homework is included along with the classroom instruction, and teachers provide practice tests to help students assess how they are doing and practice taking tests.

GED on TV
Another option for GED test preparation in the state of New Jersey can be taken care of without leaving the comforts of home. The New Jersey Network, public television in the state, offers televised courses to help students prepare for the GED exam. The courses air on the network daily, Monday through Thursday at 5 a.m. GED Connection is made up of 39 sessions, each 30 minutes in length, that will provide the knowledge required in the five subject areas and provide tips for test-taking. There are nine sessions on writing, five classes on reading, six on social studies, five on science and 14 math sessions.
