Hairstyles For Round Faces With Long Heavy Wavy Hair

Long hair looks well on women with a round face.

Round faces tend to be just as wide as they are long. For women with round faces there are certain cuts and styles that look great...and others not so great. However, one hairstyle that looks good on round faces is long hair--or, at least, hair longer than your chin. If your hair is about shoulder length or longer, picking out the best hairstyles will be easy. Does this Spark an idea?

Ratting your hair

One very flattering look for women with long hair and a round face is to rat the hair. Ratting the hair will not only give the illusion of super fullness, but it will also elongate the face, making it look more oval shaped. You can rat your hair with any hairstyle--from a ponytail to pulling your hair up on the sides--to give your face a slimmer look. To rat your hair, purchase an actual rat tail comb (although a regular comb might work, the look won't last). A rat tail comb has very thin and fine bristles, as well as a long skinny handle, or "tail." Use the tail to separate a top section of hair at the crown of your head. Holding the section up, push the comb's bristles through your hair from the top to the bottom. This will create a "nest" of hair at the crown of your head that the section will fall over, making it look raised. Continue to do this with 2 to 3 sections of hair. Allow the hair sections to fall down and gently comb them over the raised hair nests to smooth them out without combing the nests out.

Side part and swept bangs

Hair parted in the middle allows the hair to perfectly frame your face. This look is fine for people with oval or triangle shaped heads, but not for those with round heads. The middle part will enhance the roundness of your face making your face look fuller. Instead, create a side part and swept bangs. If you don't already have bangs, ask your stylist to cut you some. You'll want thinner bangs since your hair is heavy and wavy (you don't want too much hair hanging in front of your face). The bangs should fall in between your eyebrows and eyelashes when your eyes are open. You may also have to "train" your hair to stay on the side if you've always worn it the middle. The best way to do this is to wash your hair and blow it dry using a medium- to large-sized brush. Use the brush to pull your hair over while you apply the heat from the hair dryer. This method can also be used to train your bangs to sweep to the side.

A "low" half-up half-down

For a more elegant look, try a half-up half-down look. However, instead of clipping your hair up at the crown of your head, allow the hair to hang low near the base of your head. Rat your hair to add volume and height first. If you're going out, you may want to add a little hairspray to make sure that your look holds. Grab hold of the hair that falls just below either ear and sweep it around the back. Hold onto both sections of hair at the base of your head with one hand. Insert a tiny clip or a clear, plastic hair tie to keep the hair in place. This look is chic and fun; it's great to wear out to a wedding or a night on the town.
