Backyard Theme Ideas

A tiki bar can be the centerpiece of a tropical themed backyard.

Your backyard can provide an outdoor retreat at the end of a long day and serve as space to entertain family and friends for summer barbecues and picnics. Depending on how you plan to use the yard, there are variety of themes that may be used to design an attractive and functional landscape. Factors such as budget, climate and available space may affect your options, but a little creativity can make your backyard feel like a own private oasis. Does this Spark an idea?

English Garden

An English garden theme is ideal for providing a romantic look for your backyard.

Begin with flowers in three or four main colors. For a bolder look, opt for colors that contrast with one another. However, if you prefer a more unified look, use flowers in lighter and darker tones from the same color family. Flower varieties that work well in an English garden backyard theme include roses, foxglove, daises and climbing vines like clematis and morning glory.

A trellis or lattice fencing may be added to the yard for the vines to grow over so a vertical element is incorporated into the design.

Tropical

Creating a tropical look for your backyard can help recreate memories from your favorite beach vacation. Because tropical plants only survive at certain temperatures, place plants like calla lilies, birds of paradise and palm trees in pots so you can bring them inside when the temperature drops. A lagoon style pool or waterfall can add a dramatic look to your yard as well. A tiki bar is a fun option if you entertain frequently. Look for a bar that features a thatched roof and bamboo accents for an authentic look.

Japanese Zen Garden

A Japanese Zen garden theme can create a relaxing, calming landscape in your backyard. Add a rock garden by laying down a bed of sand and gravel and placing larger rocks throughout it. Choose sand and gravel that is gray, beige or white and darker rocks for contrast.

A water feature is another key element in a Japanese Zen garden theme, so consider adding a koi pond or small waterfall that leads into a pond. For a traditional look, install a bridge near the water feature. Add a bench so you can take in the sights and sounds of your Zen garden.

Desert

A desert theme is an ideal option if you want a low maintenance look for your backyard that requires little watering or mowing. Instead of grass, use gravel or pebbles to fill in areas of the yard. Palms trees and cacti can be placed in the middle of the beds for added greenery. For a decorative look, use terracotta tiles for a patio space or a path through the gravel.
