Pools are excellent backdrops for parties, because the water provides endless game possibilities with the pool deck and surroundings giving a casual atmosphere where people can relax and let loose. Whether it's a birthday party, Fourth of July barbecue or family reunion, unusual cake designs help to commemorate the party's theme. It's fairly easy to create an impressive looking cake. Pirate Ship
A pirate-themed party is a clever idea for young children's birthdays. Having the pirate celebration at the pool adds to the swashbuckling ambiance that kids love. Create a pirate ship cake matching the party theme. Making a three-dimensional cake shaped like a ship may seem daunting, but the wide-eyed "oohs" from the kids will be well worth your effort. Plan ahead when making a the ship cake. Cook two or three round cakes ahead of time. Cut the cakes in half to create four to six half-rounds and freeze them. When thawed, line the cake halves together, rounded sides down, and attach them with a plastic straw pushed through near the bottom so the top is flat, serving as the ship deck. Frost the cake with chocolate icing. Use root beer barrels, soft round chocolate covered caramels and malt balls as your deck barrels, cannons and cannon balls. The sails can be made with barbecue skewers through wafer paper. Place the candles in each "cannon" and light up the pirate ship for battle.
Island Oasis
Stack two 9-inch cakes together and freeze them to make them easier to work with. Remove the center from the cake going about three-quarters inch deep leaving a 1-inch perimeter of frozen or slightly thawed cake. Prepare blue gelatin using only half of the required water and pour it into what will be the pool on the island oasis, and set the entire cake in the refrigerator to let the gelatin solidify. Later, frost around the edge of the entire cake with light blue icing and crush vanilla wafers to create a sandy shore. Bear-shaped graham crackers and fish crackers decorate and populate the water and shoreline.
Swim Team Success
To help a swim team celebrate a great season, create a "swimmer's cake" that replicates an Olympic-size swimming pool. Bake a 13-by-9 inch cake. Allow the cake to cool and dig out a rectangular pool in the center with a serrated knife keeping a 2-inch border on the edges. Prepare blue gelatin using only half the water and pour it into the "pool." Place the cake in the refrigerator to allow the gelatin to solidify. Draw swim lanes with white frosting and use chocolate wafer sections to create the starting blocks. Frost the edge of the cake with white frosting and place malt ball halves in the water as the racers with their swim caps showing out of the water.
