For less involved cupcakes stick with frosting and candy decorations. Any cupcake can be made with fondant if that is your preferred method. No matter what medium you choose these cupcakes look great on the dessert table and will taste even better. Try using red velvet cake mix or food coloring to give your cupcake a festive color beneath the icing. Begin decorating your cupcakes once they have cooled.
Snowman Cupcake: Use marshmallows, pretzels, fruit leather, sprinkles or decorating gel, and chocolate covered candies. After icing your cupcake stack marshmallows and add the arms, eyes, buttons, hat, scarf and nose.
Gingerbread Cupcakes: Ice the cupcake and stack gingerbread treats on top. If you use a gingerbread man, help him stand up by adding icing beneath his feet.
Christmas Tree Cupcakes: Ice your cupcakes with chocolate frosting. Lay sprinkles or M&M candies on the cake in the shape of a tree. Add yellow at the top for the star. You can also use a cupcake tree to stack multiple cupcakes and create a larger Christmas tree. Cover all but one cupcake with green candies or sprinkles. Cover the top cupcake with yellow sprinkles or candies.
Ornaments: Use fondant or frosting to cover the cupcake entirely. Use various colors of frosting or fondant to decorate your ornament. You can make all the cupcakes look the same or make each cupcake look different from the rest. Try to duplicate the ornaments on your tree.
Gift Box: This idea works for a single cupcake or those being stacked on a cupcake tree. After icing the cupcake use fondant or frosting to create a bow. The bow can be very basic or a larger with flowing ribbons.
Candy Cane Cupcakes: After the cupcakes are iced add red or green sprinkles sparingly. Insert tiny candy canes into the center of the cake with the hook part at the top of the candy cane facing outward. You can use one to four candy canes.
Santa Claus: This idea works best with fondant. The first layer on the cupcake should be white or peach colored. Add a white beard, black eyes and a red hat. In this same batch of cupcakes try to create a Mrs. Claus, elves, and Santa’s outfit.
Reindeer: Reindeer cupcakes are made almost entirely of chocolate. The icing or fondant should be brown. Use pretzels, candies and sprinkles to create antlers and facial features.
Poinsettia & Mistletoe: Try using fruit leather cut into the shape of these iconic Christmas plants. Use green and red icing or fondant if preferred.
Christmas Scene Cupcakes: Use fondant to create winter wonderland scenes. Mold tiny people and Christmas trees. Add a little girl sitting down making snowballs with tracks in the snow. Try making two little boys playing hockey. You can also create a person who is dragging Christmas lights through the snow. If you live in a warm climate where snow never comes during Christmas create a beach scene. Use graham cracker crumbs and blue fruit leather for the beach. Add a green Christmas tree on the beach.
