Banquet Theme Ideas

Whether you are planning a banquet event for a wedding, sports, church or work function you can design a theme to make the ambiance a little more special. Use the reason for the banquet as the base for your theme then add special touches to turn your banquet into the most talked about event of the season. Be sure to assemble a team of volunteers to help you execute your next banquet, have guests RSVP and put the local party rental store's number on your speed dial. Does this Spark an idea?

Sports Themed Party

Any sports banquet will benefit from adding a few sports themed touches. Use the specific sport as your main idea and begin with invitations. Make or purchase invitations in the shape of the ball or sport. For example, if the sport is for the golf team, you could create a large golf ball.

Design team specific centerpieces for each table. Purchase a stand-up sports specific centerpiece at the local party store or you could make your own. Laminate copies of the team roster and stand them up on the table with candles or have confetti splashed around it. You could also create stand up photos of players from the last season for each table. Many photo processing shops can create these or you can make your own using a color printout and pasting it to foam board. Glue four small figures around a glass and you can create a three dimensional centerpiece staring your team.

Decorate the room using the same team photos, but larger. Have life size team photos created at your local copy or printing store.

Create a section of the room for party games such as score a goal at a soccer banquet or putt a hole in one at the golf banquet. Designate an area where guests can get food and drinks.

Formal Banquet

Weddings, anniversaries, award ceremonies and retirement parties command a more upscale, elegant theme. You can transform any room into luscious simple elegance, no matter which venue you select. Start with invitations to set the scene. Choose one ink color, a classic type style on clean white paper to announce your party.

Go for quality and quantity when it comes to centerpiece flowers. Select one type of flower, one color and as many of them as you can afford. You can add lots of greenery to reduce the cost. Create large bouquets housed in large crystal vases for centerpieces and be sure each serving or bar table has a bouquet.

If your venue has cold concrete walls or is generally unattractive, you can purchase or rent fabric wall coverings to soften the look and give it a sophisticated appeal. Don't forget about using an understated, one color table cloth on each table and consider renting or purchasing chair coverings if the chairs don't match the room's ambiance.

Add special touches throughout the room such as small crystal candy dishes filled with one or two color candies or even including a small gift, such as a photo album or special commemorative photo DVD at each place setting.

Birthday Party Banquet

Begin fashioning the theme with the birthday honoree's favorite movie, hobby or interests. Use the birthday theme idea in your invitation. For example, if the theme is "the movies" you could create a small movie invitation that you design on your Macintosh or PC. Use your presentation software to generate an invitation that you can play on your DVD player that has the movie theme.

Be as imaginative as possible for centerpiece ideas. Run with the celebrant's idea theme to create a one of a kind centerpiece. For example, if you are throwing a drag queen party, you could position a few Ken dolls on the table but dress them in Barbie clothing and wigs. Slap a little make-up on Ken to complete his transformation.

Food and drinks are as personal as your guest of honor's theme. You could have an old fashioned popcorn maker and candy counter at a movie themed birthday banquet or devote an entire table to a make your own sundae bar for a child's birthday banquet party. Hire a local caterer that specializes in a certain ethnic cuisine if you are throwing a banquet with an ethnic theme.
