Lifesaver Cake
Create a cake in the form of a pool lifesaver. Bake a ring-shaped cake using a round ring cake pan, Bundt pan or round cake pan. Carve any necessary areas to perfect the shape of a lifesaver. Frost the cake with red and white stripes to mimic the traditional appearance of a lifesaver. Affix licorice lace or apply yellow frosting---using a frosting bag---to the outer perimeter of the cake to mimic the rope on a lifesaver. White cake and peppermint-flavored frosting are well suited for this cake.
The Life Aquatic
Design a lively cake with a diorama of all things aquatic. Cover the cake with ocean-blue frosting. Affix fish candies around the sides of the cake to look like they are swimming through the water. Make a desert island with a slight mound of frosting and cover it with crumbled vanilla wafers to look like sand. Make palm trees using frosting-covered wafer rolls for the trunks, Cocoa Puffs or chocolate malt balls for the coconuts and gum paste or green apple fruit leather for the leaves. Arrange cute animal-shaped crackers on top of the cake to look like they are hanging out at the beach. Use frosting to make them pool floats. Turn the birthday cake into a bright, shining sun. Bake the cake in an oven-safe bowl. Frost the cake with a thin layer of yellow frosting. Use a frosting bag with a tip to cover the cake in little cones of varying shades of yellow and orange. The cones will mimic the rays of the sun. If you want to add a shiny finish to the cake, apply a sugar syrup glaze over the icing. Bright citrus flavors, such as lemon or orange, work well with a sun cake at a pool party and can be added to the cake mix, frosting or glaze.
