Leis are essential to any Hawaiian attire.
When dressing up for a luau or a Hawaiian-themed event, you have several ways that you can dress for it. You can fit in by wearing floral print, or you can dress in a costume. Choose based on what is most comfortable for you and what is appropriate for the event.
Hawaiian Print
Hawaiian print is a floral print that comes in many different colors, mostly solid but sometimes multi-colored. For example, a man can wear a colored Hawaiian print collared shirt or shorts (not both). A woman should wear a Hawaiian print dress, short or floor length. Wear sandals or open-toed heels with these outfits to keep with the breezy, tropical feel of the attire.
Leis
No matter what you decide to wear, you need to have a lei with your outfit. Choose a lei that is made out of real flowers that have been strung together. This lasts for only a short amount of time because of the perishable flowers. Or you can buy cheap leis in many different colors. These are made from thin plastic. Everyone can have a few of these and they last for as long as you take care of them since they are made from synthetic materials.
Luau Costume
Wear a luau costume. For a woman's costume, wear a long grass skirt, coconut shell top, and a crown of flowers on the head. If you feel uncomfortable with the coconut top, wear a brown or red solid-colored top. A man's costume is made from a grass skirt and the crown of flowers as well. Both men and women can wear swimsuits under the grass skirts.
