Children'S Luau Party Games

Kid's love to dress up in island gear.

A luau party for kids means easy choices for food, decorations and dress. Your theme-related party invitations will already have the kids in the island mood, and you can enhance the excitement with some well-planned party games. Luau party games will help structure your birthday party time and help kids socialize with new friends.

Hawaiian Attire Relay

Gather enough materials for two teams to include two grass skirts, two leis, two Hawaiian shirts, two straw hats and two beach bags. Divide the kids into two equal groups and give each team one beach bag including all the items. Place two chairs at an equal distance away from each team and give the following instructions. Each team member takes a turn and must dress themselves in all the items in the bag. Once dressed they must run to the chair and back again, then undressing and placing items back into the bag. They must then give the bag to the next person in line and repeat this until each team member has had a turn. The team that completes the relay first wins.

Limbo

Play some Hawaiian music and grab a broomstick or paint extender handle to use as your limbo pole. Start with the pole about waist high (for the adults holding the limbo pole) and have party-goers dance under it. Lower the pole as you go through allowing the kids to shimmy or crawl under the pole at the lower levels. The last child to clear the lowest limbo pole wins.

Conch Hunt

Using a large conch shell, hide it somewhere in your yard or party room. Have the kids hunt for the conch, with the first child to find it to win a small prize. Once you have a first winner, have that child hide the shell and the hunt is on again. Keep playing until you have five different winners.

Crazy Surfer

Using a real surf board or a surfboard-shaped piece of painted plywood, lay the board over two large rolling pins to allow the board to move slightly and lift it off the grass or carpeting. Playing classic surfer or Hawaiian music, challenge children to present their most creative surf pose. Have a panel of three judges rate each pose from five to 10 and write down each child's score. Allow each child to pose twice, with the highest total score winning a prize. Be sure kids wear shoes if they are on plywood to prevent any slivers.
