Class Theme Ideas

Many students can identify with a classroom theme centered around sports.

A classroom should be inviting to students and should be set up in such a way that promotes cooperation, respect, and learning. Incorporating a classroom theme is a great way to get students excited about the new school year and to encourage them to be active participants in classroom activities. Themes might serve only as inviting decor or might be centered around units of study being taught in the classroom throughout the school year.

Teams

Classroom themes based around teams can promote cooperation and increase motivation with students of all ages. Students will come to the understanding that their classmates are a team and that by working together they can accomplish many goals. Throughout the school year, students can research various sports including basketball, baseball, football, soccer, lacrosse, archery, and diving. Research and student work can be posted on bulletin boards to share with others.

Western

Classroom decor centered around a Western theme can help instill the importance of determination and work ethic in students. Studies about early settlements and the pioneers who settled our country can help students understand the importance of setting goals and working hard to overcome adversity.

Hollywood

A Hollywood theme can help students set a goal to become a star in their educational endeavors. Students can research famous actors, athletes, and musicians to better understand the struggles that they had to overcome to reach their goals and that stardom doesn't happen overnight. Each student might write a letter to his favorite actor, athlete, or musician and describe how the famous person's story inspired him to become a star as well.

Current Events

A classroom theme centered around current events can help students stay connected to the real world and understand how these events affect their lives. Examples of current events themes may include the Olympics, the Iditarod, and presidential elections. Students might bring in newspaper and magazine clippings to follow the events.

Geography

A geography theme can help students understand the world outside of their immediate environment. Throughout the school year, students might learn about different regions of the world. Examining other cultures helps students understand that people are as similar as they are different and expands their knowledge of people beyond their own culture.
