Fruit Appetizer Ideas

Fruit can be a great addition to any meal.

If you are entertaining guests and are debating what type of appetizer to serve before the main course, consider preparing a light and refreshing fruit-based appetizer. Fruit has a tangy and juicy taste and can make a perfect healthy and quick opening act to a hearty, heavier and more filling savory entree. Many ideas for delicious fruit appetizers are available. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Fruit and Cheese

One unlikely but still appetizing combination is the aged French cheese brie and fruit. For a mouth-watering pre-dinner appetizer, slice up between 7 and 8 oz. of brie cheese and pour a couple of tablespoons of melted butter over them. Cover the cheese with a dabbling of chopped up nuts (such as hazelnuts, pecans, peanuts, almonds and walnuts) and microwave everything for about five minutes. Finish off the appetizer with a cool and refreshing side of fruit, such as sliced pears or apples.

Fruit Cups

For a more exotic and Mediterranean-inspired fruit appetizer, consider preparing the Italian "bella melone," which translates as "beautiful melon." The recipe calls for chilled slices of watermelon and cantaloupe, along with balsamic vinegar, honey and perhaps even some black pepper. Blend the honey and balsamic vinegar and lightly drizzle it over the fruit. For an especially attractive appearance, serve the fruit concoction inside of slender champagne flutes.

Skewers

Fruit skewers are not only healthy, they are also simple and quick to make. All you need to make fruit skewers are a handful of skewers (about 20 or so, depending on the size of your gathering) and a variety of fruit, either cubed, sliced up into balls, or cut in half. Consider fruits such as strawberries, kiwi, pineapples, bananas, cantaloupes and melons. Insert the fruit onto the skewer alternately to provide a bright and fun appearance to the appetizer.

Dips

Apple dip is a quick and convenient fruit appetizer option that conjures up mental images of warmth and cozy winter days. The simple recipe calls for cream cheese, vanilla extract, brown sugar and sliced fresh apples. Thoroughly blend the vanilla extract, brown sugar and cream cheese until the dip has a smooth texture. Serve the apple slices on the side. Your guests will have a sweet and tasty dip for their apples.
