Graduation Party Planning Ideas

Planning a successful graduation party requires organization, creativity and a little time on the day of the party to assemble your decorations. Graduation is always one of the most important days in someone's life and that day will be remembered for years to come. With all the hard work and sacrifice of time it takes to reach graduation day, the recipient of a graduation party will certainly be grateful for the effort put into a well planned graduation party. Does this Spark an idea?

Initial Planning and Materials Needed

Purchase a binder with pockets to gather your ideas, important business cards and contact information. Create a folder named "Graduation Party" on your computer to store all important emails, estimates and party information sent to you via the computer. Within that folder, you can create sub files for estimates, party ideas, contacts and so on.

Create a theme or color scheme that suits the future graduate. With the theme finalized, you can start to make purchases like catering order, decorations and invitations. Contact the family and friends of of the future graduate to start gathering addresses for the invitations.

Choosing a Theme

Select a theme or design based on the graduate's interests. You can either ask them directly or if you wish to keep the party a surprise, ask their friends and family about more clues that may help you develop a theme.

School Colors Theme

Picking a theme of the school colors is one theme that many graduate parties use. Usually there are two primary colors for the school logo. With those two colors, you can purchase table cloths, plastic plates, flowers and even coordinate the color of the cake. Most bakers are able to create replicas of school logos if provided with a clear example.

Future Theme

Consider planning a theme revolving around the graduate's future job or city they may be moving to. If the graduate has taken a job in Manhattan, you can revolve the theme around New York City icons. With a New York theme, you could play off of the "Big Apple" theme with apples in clear vases as centerpieces, a New York City skyline painted on the cake and New York themed music playing throughout the event.

Similarly, if the graduate is graduating with a certain degree, such as accounting, you could have inexpensive calculators at each place setting, large numbers stenciled on a paper table cloth and copies of spreadsheets used as place mats.

Luau-Tropical Theme

Select a tropical or Luau graduation party if your looking for an easy-to-plan and popular theme. Order or prepare tropical food such as mango salsa and chips, grilled Caribbean-spiced chicken, shrimp and pineapple skewers and coconut lime cupcakes for dessert. Place faux palm trees around the event area and pass out Hawaiian leis to the guests as they enter the party.
