Venue
Traditionally, luaus are held outside in the summer months, unless you live in a warm climate. Choose the size of your venue based on the atmosphere you would like to create. For a bustling, festive feeling with many guests, it may be necessary to reserve a large outdoor area such as a courtyard or park. For a more intimate gathering with fewer invitees, a somewhat secluded backyard can be the perfect spot for a luau.
Decorations
For a "Get Leied Luau," the most important decoration is pretty obvious: leis for all. Besides distributing one to each guest upon arrival, leis in varying tropical colors should be hung from balconies, tree branches and other suitable areas. Other tropical items can be strategically placed around the party, such as seashells on a buffet table, blow-up palm trees in the corners of a deck and a generous amount of pink flamingoes on a lawn.
Food
Luaus traditionally feature authentic Hawaiian fare such as pork, beef and rice with a sweet flavor from pineapple in many dishes. Some even go so far as to prepare the traditional roast pig over a fire for all guests to see. However, do not be afraid to offer some non-traditional foods such as hamburgers and hot dogs for those who may not enjoy the exotic offerings. One must: the Mai Tai cocktail, made from lime, candy syrup and rum, served in a hollow coconut.
Costumes
Costumes are a definite must for a "Get Leied Luau" party. While pre-assembled costumes can be purchased at virtually any costume store, it is just as easy to make your own for a fraction of the cost. For the ladies, try cutting a garbage bag into strips and pair the skirt with a bikini top. For the gentlemen, an old Hawaiian-print short-sleeved dress shirt can come out of storage to be paired with bathing suit trunks. Costumes need not be fussy or expensive, just festive.
