Many teachers encounter students who see multiplication as boring and useless. Multiplication is important, however, because it is an essential building block for higher levels of math such as division, fractions and algebra. Many teachers use games as a fun way to motivate students to learn and memorize multiplication facts and tables.
Multiplication Uno
Multiplication Uno is a multiplication and factoring game variation of Uno, the popular card game. The game uses a deck of Uno cards and can be played with two to eight players. In the regular version of Uno, cards that match the color or number can only be discarded. In Multiplication Uno, however, the only cards that can be discarded are those that are multiples or factors of the last card discarded. For example, if a "4" was the last card discarded, a "2," "4" or "8" could be discarded next. The game ends when one of the players has discarded all of their cards.
Multiplication Top-It
Multiplication Top-It is a two-player variation of the familiar card game War. Before starting the game, it is necessary to assign values to face cards. For example, jacks can be worth 10, queens can be 11, kings can be 12 and aces can be one. Each player draws two cards from the deck and multiplies the two numbers to get the product. The player with the highest product wins that round and gets to take all four cards. If both players have an equal product, the four cards should be placed in the middle and play another round. The winner of the subsequent round gets the cards from both rounds. Multiplication Top-It is played until there are no more cards left to draw. The player with the most cards at the end is the winner.
Multiplication War
Multiplication War is a fun two-player game that can help you memorize multiplication tables with a deck of cards, and is very similar to Multiplication Top-It. As in Multiplication Top-It, face cards must be assigned values before playing the game. Begin by shuffling and dealing the deck of cards equally to the two players. Each player turns over a card in their deck simultaneously. The first player to call out the correct product wins the two cards. If the product is named at the same time, the two cards are placed in the middle and the process is repeated until one player is quicker in calling out the correct product. The winner receives all the cards in the middle of the table. The game ends when all of the cards have been drawn. The player with the most cards at the end is the winner.
