A senior enjoying her birthday

Today's senior citizens are healthier and livelier than ever before, so their birthdays are still a reason to celebrate and to do so in style. Snacks and Refreshments

Like most trends, food fads tend to rise and fall in popularity. For seniors, certain snacks or refreshments may remind them of their childhood and can be a fun and thoughtful party idea. Sarsaparilla used to be a popular soft drink and, although rare, can still be found today. Crackerjacks, as well, used to be the snack of choice at baseball games in the earlier part of the 20th century. Of course, because many seniors have dietary restrictions, a well-thought out food and drink selection is all the more important.

Games

It's certainly true that one can never be too old to engage in a little fun and games. Several games that are particularly popular among seniors can be easily organized. Bingo, for instance, is an activity that can entertain dozens of people at a time, while card games such as bridge and gin rummy allow seniors to socialize while participating in a little friendly competition. Depending on the location of the party, a game of miniature golf might be a pleasant surprise for once serious golfers on their birthdays.

Music

One thing that every generation has in common is a love for a particular style of music, usually one was in its heyday they were in their prime. Big band jazz is always a favorite and is sure to people out of their seats and onto the dance floor. For seniors today, crooners like Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett sang the songs that they and their future spouses fell in love to and can be a lovely touch during a birthday celebration. It's a good idea to find out the birthday person's favorite music beforehand to ensure a nice surprise.

Family Photo Collage

When folks get older, they tend to appreciate the things that really matter in life, and nothing matters more than family. That's why a large poster board collage of old family photos is the perfect touch when celebrating a birthday. Such a gift will allow them to reminisce and appreciate all the more the people they have been close to throughout their long lives. Color copies of the photos can be cut out and arranged for an artistic effect. Such a collage will make both a nice decoration and an everlasting gift.
