Directions On Making A Medieval Sword

Replicating medieval items is one way to teach about medieval culture.

Making a medieval sword is a wonderful project for families, medieval clubs or enthusiasts to do together. A replica of a medieval sword can be made using simple steps, easily obtainable items, and only a few hours of actual work. This sword can be the springboard for discussions and learning about the people, art and cultures of medieval days. It can also just be a great toy to play with.

Instructions

1. Place a piece of cardboard with the corrugation running the long way on the floor or table.

2. Glue a piece of the cardboard with the corrugation running the short way on top of the first piece. Use white glue to glue the boards together. Continue to do this process, alternating the pieces until the top one is in place.

3. Place some heavy books or blocks on top of the cardboard and allow it to dry overnight.

4. Draw the pattern for your medieval sword on the top layer of the cardboard. Cut the shape out very carefully using a box cutter.

5. Turn the sword on its side and using the paintbrush, apply 2 thick layers of wood glue all the way around the sword. Only do this on the sides of the sword, the butt and the handle. Allow the glue to dry overnight.

6. Decorate the sword by painting the blade or covering it with foil. Apply foil to one surface at a time using the white glue to hold it down. Use the box trimmer to trim the edges. Do this one side and edge at a time. Wrap the sword blade in clear tape once the foil is set in place to keep it from coming off.

7. Decorate the handle using the colored tape. Wrap the colored tape around the sword handle. You can use the different colors to add patterns to the handle.
