Games For Senior Adults To Play At A Party

Seniors enjoy playing various card games.

Arrange party games that are appropriate for the ability and interests of the seniors involved. Use a variety of games ranging from well-known games to innovative games according to the occasion, type of group or sponsor of the party. Play the games at private homes, senior citizen clubs, churches or synagogues, public libraries or any place where seniors congregate and celebrate. Does this Spark an idea?

Bingo

Bingo makes a good choice for seniors. Purchase the necessary cards at toy stores or design them by hand. Look for cards with variations of the game with topics to which seniors can relate such as movies or radio shows. Write these in the boxes. The hostess describes these and seniors cover the appropriate boxes. Also, list songs on the cards. Have the hostess sing part of the song and request that the guests cover the correct boxes. The first person to cover the entire card wins the game and receives a prize.

Play Auction

Have the seniors compete to purchase items in a play auction. Buy items for the auction or request that seniors wrap and bring new or used items from home to the party. Obtain play money from a game store. Hold up an item in front of the group and ask the seniors to bid on it. The highest bidder receives the item.

Sing Along

Seniors enjoy singing games. Provide for someone who plays the piano or guitar to play part of a song. If no one is available who can do this, the chairperson sings an old time song and the audience tries to identify that tune. Organize a simple sing-along as a variation. Use old time songs such as " Take Me Out to the Ball Game," "The Band Played on" or "The Old Gray Mare He Ain't What He Used to Be."

Trivia Games

Play trivia, but relate it to the interests and abilities of the guests. The hostess prepares appropriate questions. Ask each person attending to write something that comes to mind with hints for the players as a possible variation. The audience guesses what items are described.

Guess That Baby

This game requires preparation. Ask the attendees to bring a baby picture or an adolescent picture of themselves and place it on a bulletin board as they arrive. The hostess points to a picture and the seniors try to guess who is in the picture.

Other Suggestions

Provide for other possibilities such as checkers, dominoes or chess competitions. Advance winners of one round to the next until a final winner emerges. Arrange groups for bridge and other card games. Organize physical exercises for those interested in keeping fit. In addition, plan for a group to perform an imaginary scene from "I Love Lucy" or another old time show.
