Replicate a shipwrecked S.S. Minnow on a cake.
The shipwrecked Minnow, housing Mary Ann, Ginger, The Millionaire and his wife, the professor, Skipper and the infamous Gilligan were stars of the sitcom, "Gilligan's Island." Recreate the premise of the show and its characters on an edible cake for your next "Gilligan's Island"-themed party in the starring role for your celebration. Does this Spark an idea?
The Minnow
Recreate the shipwrecked Minnow as your theme cake for a "Gilligan's Island" party. Create a two-layer round cake and decorate the cake as an island with brown icing for the sand and blue icing for the water. Freeze a separate two-layer cake, without top and side icing, and shape it into a broken boat using a sharp knife. Spread a thick layer of white icing over the cake boat and trim it with brown fondant accents. Include "S.S. Minnow" on the back of the boat with piped icing.
Gilligan's Island Title
For those party planners who wish to make their own cake but are not as creative as they may wish to be can still adhere to a "Gilligan's Island" theme by replicating the title from the sitcom atop the cake. In all capital letters with the exception of the "i" in the center of the word Gilligan, and the "a" toward the end of the name. The two letter "Ss," one in "Gilligan's" and the other in "Island" stretch down and a bit of the "S" tail underlines the word only slightly.
Gilligan's Island Characters
If you are savvy with fondant molding, consider forming colored fondant into the characters from the "Gilligan's Island" sitcom to include the appropriate clothing and features. Gilligan, Skipper, Mary Ann, Ginger, Mr. and Mrs. Howell and the Professor can be formed like play dough with the fondant and placed on top of a round cake made to look like the island. Crush graham crackers for the sand, create fondant palm trees and use blue icing gel to appear as the water.
Gilligan Replica
Trace the bottom of the cake pan you plan to use to make a two-layered cake onto a piece of white paper. Bake the cake according to package directions and layer with buttercream icing but do not ice the top and sides yet. Sketch the face of Gilligan onto the piece of paper including his hat, enlarged ears and head shape. Cut the sketch out and carefully place it on top of the layered cake. Using a sharp knife, trim the cake in the outer shape of Gilligan's face and ice the top and sides of the layered cake. Pipe icing in the colors to replicate Gilligan's face on the top of the cake with a white sailor's hat and brown hair.
