Short of hanging ten, celebrate Hawaiian culture with your own luau.
Hawaii is an incredibly beautiful and interesting state. One of its many traditions is the luau, which is an intensive party featuring poi (taro), pigs, salmon, opihi (marine snails) and beer. They can be wild parties, as they will feature native music and native dancing. Holding your own adult luau party at home requires great party games. Does this Spark an idea?
Moa Pahe'e
Moa Pahe'e is an ancient Hawaiian game of skill and strength that is similar to the game of horseshoes. Traditional Moa Pahe'e uses large torpedo-shaped wooden darts. Whittled pieces of wood can serve the purpose in your yard. The playing field will be about 50 feet. Set up two small stakes in the ground on each end of the course. The stakes should be a few inches wider than the spears. Players attempt to slide the spear on the ground and through the stakes. Players cannot cross the line made by the stakes on their side. This game requires strength and skill as the wooden stakes are difficult to handle and can be heavy.
Crab Football
This is a more physical game that can be a lot of fun. It is a major test of agility and physical strength. This game is similar to soccer, but uses an inflatable beach ball, the bigger the better. Two teams of 10 must get the ball through the opposing team's guarded net. The major difference is the way players walk---like a crab. Players have to walk on their hands and feet at all times, with their torso towards the sky. They can hit the ball with their hands, feet and head but cannot stand up. If they stand, they receive a penalty and have to sit out of the game for two minutes. Other penalties include excessive roughing. A little bumping is expected but hurting a person on purpose will result in sitting out.
Hula Contest
The traditional dance of Hawaii is the hula. It involves wild gyrations of the hips in a grass skirt. Get into the spirit of Hawaii by holding a hula contest. Buy several different grass skirts for your contestants. Buy hula hoops as well. Make a list of everybody who wants to compete. When it's time for the contest, pick three names at random. These people will compete with one another to hula the longest. Every contestant should wear a grass skirt and be given a hula hoop. The hula hoop will test how well they are doing the hula, as you keep the hula hoop up by doing the hula. The last person with the hoop up wins the round. Go through every player until you have three left. These are the final three and the winner of this is the champion of hula. Give out nice prizes for first, second and third.
