Golf Hole Ideas

Create original golf hole ideas for your next charity event.

It can take years of planning, extensive education and a lot of experience to plan a golf course, where every hill, tree and sand trap is taken under careful consideration. While golf courses are permanent, charity events often feature a temporary course, where players enjoy themed and decorated holes on a much smaller level. When you’re planning custom golf holes for your next game, you’ll find a variety of ways to score a hole in one.

Arnold Palm Tree

Set one of the custom holes on your course as a dedication to one of the most popular golfers in the history of the sport, Arnold Palmer. In his honor, erect a palm tree as the focus of the hole, where players will have to aim their balls through a small hole cut in the bottom base of the tree trunk. To personalize the tree, wrap a Miss America-style banner around the trunk that says "Athlete of the Decade," an honor Palmer was awarded for the 1960s. Decorate a few coconuts, which you can make using foam balls from the craft store and a bit of brown paint, with the words "Arnie’s Army" and hang them from the palm tree fronds.

The Sandbar Bar

While many golf players avoid sandbars like the plague, your sandbar bar tiki/luau themed hole will have them teeing up for a visit. Decorate the area leading up to the hole with tiki torches, tiki gods and Hawaiian cutouts. You can even create a pathway with tiny, tropical paper umbrellas stuck into the ground. As each player arrives at the hole, place a flowered lei around her neck and offer an "aloha." For a laugh, insist that before teeing off, players don a grass skirt. If your event allows, set up a small tiki bar serving frozen cocktails such as pina coladas, margaritas and strawberry daiquiris, to make a refreshing stop before players move on.

Hole in One is #1

Getting a hole in one can make a golfer’s game or even his entire day, so let all the attendees at your event have that singular opportunity when you design a #1 hole in one. To create this hole, you’ll need a large, thick piece of foam such as the kind that comes bracketing new appliances in their cardboard boxes. Create the shape of the number one out of the foam using a box cutter. Lay the foam number down flat so it is not standing up straight. To make a path for the ball to go through, you’ll need a drill with a very wide bit, creating a wedge from the base of the one (where players will aim their balls) out the top of the one to the hole. Secure the one shape to the green with cable ties or divots through the foam, out of the balls pathway.
