Christian Scavenger Hunt Ideas

Christian Scavenger Hunt Ideas

Scavenger hunts are one of the most wholesome ways to have fun in a large group while in public. Many youth and bible studies groups use scavenger hunts as an elaborate icebreaker. Usually, an entire afternoon or evening must be dedicated to this activity. There are many different ways to have a scavenger hunt with Christians, all of which will provide optimum group fellowship.

Video Hunt

The video hunt has become much easier due to jumps in technology that allow video recording on cell phones and digital cameras. Since most people now have these devices, a video scavenger hunt takes the picture scavenger hunt to a higher level. These video hunts should consist of recordings of activities. So where a picture scavenger hunt might have "person with red hair" on the list, a video scavenger hunt will say "give a person with red hair a gospel tract." Once that action has successfully been performed (and recorded for proof), the group can move on to the next action.

Big Ups

This type of scavenger hunt doesn't require a specific list of items, but instead requires a bigger or better object with each turn. For example, teams should all start with a simple object (pencil, cup, sock, etc.) but should approach a stranger, explain they're in a scavenger hunt and attempt to trade the object they have with something bigger or better. So if a team starts with a pencil, a stranger may give them a roll of toilet paper (assuming they knocked on someone's door). Then the team should take that toilet paper to the next stranger to see if they can get something bigger and so on. Groups can also go to independent businesses, where large items that would have been thrown away may be prizes for the scavenger hunt. When the allotted time is up, the groups must all compare their "biggest" prize that they ended with, and a judge must determine the winner.

Hidden Characters

This scavenger hunt requires two aspects: the usual teams and the actors. The actors are usually the youth leaders or pastors, and the teams are usually the kids. The scavenger hunt should take place in a public area with a lot of people (like a mall) and the actors must wear clothes that would disguise them from their normal appearance. Players must approach the actors if they think they recognize them, and if they guess right they can add the name to the list. The funny part about this game is that kids will sometimes come up to a total stranger asking if they're a youth pastor. This is harmless fun and a unique twist on the scavenger hunt icebreaker.
