Coconut Luau Party Games

Coconuts make a luau party more successful by providing games for guests.

Coconuts are not just for decorations for luau parties. Other decorations like palm trees, grass skirts and Polynesian props help create a festive luau party atmosphere, but coconuts are much more than just party props. With a few coconuts and a little planning, your next luau party will be a hit. Coconuts, which are sold at most grocery stores, can be used exciting games for almost any luau party, no matter the ages of the guests. Does this Spark an idea?

Hot Coconut Game

Only one or two coconuts are necessary to play the hot coconut game at a luau party. Have the luau party guests form a circle in a large room or outside on the deck or patio. Begin playing Hawaiian or beach-themed music, and have the party guests toss the coconut around the circle. It does not have to be passed in the order of the circle. When the music stops, the person in the circle who is holding the coconut is out of the game. Continue playing the music and stopping it a minute or two after it starts to eliminate more party guests from the game. The winner is the last person who is still standing without the coconut when the music stops.

Coconut Word Game

The coconut word game is appropriate for ages 10 and over. This game involves one coconut and a lot of imagination. To play the coconut word game, have the luau party guests form a circle in a large room or outdoors. Hand the coconut to the person who will start the game. That person thinks of a word and says it out loud, then tosses the coconut to another person in the circle. That person then has five seconds to think of a word that begins with the last letter of the previous word. People are eliminated from the circle if they cannot create a word within five seconds. Continue the coconut word game in this manner until there is only one person left.

Bowling With Coconuts

Bowling with coconuts is a luau party game that is enjoyable for children and adults. To play this game, you will need two coconuts and 10 empty two-liter drink bottles. It is best to bowl with coconuts on a deck or concrete floor, so the coconuts do not damage the floor's surface. Set the drink bottles up in a bowling format, and have the party guests roll a coconut towards them. Each guests gets two turns to try to knock over all the drink bottle pins. You can play this game like regular bowling with 10 frames of two coconuts each, or you can shorten it to five frames. Add up each person's score to see who is the best coconut bowler.
