When you're a teen, you need better costumes than skeletons and monsters.
Coming up with a Halloween costume can be difficult, especially for a teenage guy. You don't want to spend a fortune, but you want to look cool when you show up at a party. Don't fret -- finding that perfect costume is easier than you think. Whether you're going alone or as a group, popular culture and wordplay can provide ample inspiration for some clever and simple ideas.
Puns
Turn common phrases like "time flies," "the red scare" or "the black plague" into a Halloween costume. Wear fairy wings and paint your chest like a clock or wear a construction-paper clock. Dress all in red and wear a sign that says "boo!," or dress in all black and paint some boils on your hands and face. Other fun puns to try are "eye-pod," "hell in a hand-basket," "gross-ery bag," "black-mail," "smarty-pants" or "pig in a blanket."
Movie Reference
Everyone loves a throwback to a good movie. If you have favorite childhood movie characters, try to replicate their best-known outfits. For a more classic reference, grab a light-saber and go as Luke Skywalker or Darth Vader, put on a tight black t-shirt and slick your hair back to go as Danny from "Grease" or find a whip and a brown floppy hat and go as Indiana Jones. You could also go as the Tin Man, the Scarecrow or the Lion from "The Wizard of Oz" or Humphrey Bogart in "Casablanca." For a more modern reference, put on a Guy Fawkes mask from "V for Vendetta" or take up a sword and add a fake beard for Jack Sparrow from "Pirates of the Caribbean." If you want something a little less common, go as a minor movie character like the gingerbread man from "Shrek" or Mr. Potato Head from "Toy Story." You could also go as an action figure or a video game character like GI Joe, PacMan or Mario.
Groups
If you have a few friends that can't think of a costume either, consider going as a group. You could go as a rock band like Kiss, a sports team with face paint and jerseys or a set of movie characters. Some fun group costumes might include the T-Birds from "Grease," the hobbits from "Lord of the Rings," the characters on "Looney Tunes" or "Sesame Street," the tea party from "Alice in Wonderland" or the boys on "South Park."
Mix and Match
Put a spin on an old classic, like a disco-dancing pharaoh or a pirate from outer space. You could be a caveman hipster with a vest and black Chucks, a classy Frankenstein with sleek shades and a snazzy suit, a secret agent on a tropical vacation, a wizard from the 60s with a magic wand and a forehead band, a nerdy gangster with thick glasses and plenty of bling or a gourmet chef vampire with an apron and a pair of fangs. Try to be witty and fun, but don't be offensive.
