Cake Ideas & Designs For Kids

Kids' cakes should be fun and interesting.

For a child, an elegant and delicate cake can be unexciting. Make your kid's cake special by using a cool theme and favorite colors. Popular ideas and designs for kids' cakes include cars, princesses, sea life and picture collages of the birthday celebrant. Make these themes come to life with toy figurines, icing sculptures and creative cake shapes. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Princess

Princesses never go out of style as a theme for a kid's birthday party. Start with a square or round cake and create a princess's ballroom on the top with plastic figurines. Accent with icing flowers around the edges or create a princess out of the cake itself. To make a princess-shaped cake, use a domed cake mold and a doll cake topper. Place the topper on the dome and decorate the bottom of the cake with icing to look like a ball gown. Place a small toy tiara on the head of the cake topper to complete the princess look.

Cars

Satisfy the kid who likes things with wheels by making a car-themed cake. Choose from two easy options when making a car cake. Start with a sheet cake and coat it with green buttercream icing. Lay down roads for toy cars with grey fondant, which you will precut into long rectangles. Decorate with buttercream icing to create the details on the roads. Add different types of toy cars to the road. Alternatively, start with a few layers of sheet cake and carve out the shape of a race car. Cover it with a colored icing of your kid's choosing. Add details with fondant cutouts for a personalized and exciting car-shaped cake.

Sea Life

The ocean is often a magical place for kids. Make a cake that embodies that magic. Start with a sheet cake coated in blue icing. Add vertical clusters of seaweed-shaped molded chocolate. Sculpt different types of fish from modeling chocolate or fondant and put them onto the cake with skewers so they look like they're swimming through the seaweed. Add plastic clam shells or well-cleaned and disinfected real oyster shells filled with round candies as pearls. To finish off the under the sea cake, add some smaller sea plants, shaped from buttercream icing, to the base of the cake.

Picture Collage

It's always fun for kids to see pictures of themselves and on a cake is no different. For a kid's birthday party, have pictures printed onto an edible paper and put on the cake itself. Take pictures from past birthdays and create a collage on top of the cake. Add icing shapes like hearts or stars around the main picture of the collage. Accent the rest of the cake with plastic figurines or molded chocolate shapes that look like the child's favorite items, such as sports balls, skates or dance shoes.
