Catering Platter Menu Ideas

Catering platters are an effective way of feeding large groups of people with a minimum of expense and fuss. This makes them ideal for such events as corporate activities, open days and parties. When constructing a platter, it is best to select foods that complement one another's flavors, so a themed platter is a wise choice. A theme based on the region where the food was produced is a good idea, as these foods are likely to have been developed over time to go well together. Add this to my Recipe Box.

British-Themed Platter

The neutral and satisfying flavors of British dishes mean that your guests or clients are unlikely to be dissatisfied with this type of platter. A British-themed platter could incorporate sliced Yorkshire ham, roast chicken drumsticks, cocktail sausages and sliced pork pie. In addition to these meats, the platter includes mature cheddar, pickled onions, pickled cucumbers, fresh bread, butter and English mustard.

Italian-Themed Platter

The rich culinary history of Italy makes Italian food perfect for catering platters. Try a mixture of pizza slices, baguettes with garlic butter and different pasta dishes -- using tomato sauces, cheese sauces or pesto -- to create a truly eclectic representation of Italian cuisine. A comprehensive Italian platter would include a selection of Italian meats, such as fresh Milano salami, Parma ham, Chorizo sausage and Napoli salami, as well as black pitted olives, sun blushed tomatoes and green olives stuffed with pimentos.

Eastern-Themed Platter

The wide range of different cuisines and dishes that fall under the umbrella term of "eastern" can make for an interesting platter. A Chinese platter with a selection of Chinese bites, homemade sweet chilli jam, mini-duck wraps and hoisin sauce, Chinese style chicken wings and fragrant Chinese noodle salad makes for an interesting menu. For an Indian-themed platter try an array of naan breads, mango chutney and lime pickle, homemade chicken tikka sticks and a coriander salad. Alternatively, a collage of eastern flavors -- including other eastern signatures, such as Thai green curry -- will provide something for everyone.

Vegetarian Platter Ideas

A classic vegetarian platter is made by finding novel substitutes for the savoury flavours and textures of meat. This can be achieved via the use of hummus, tofu and mushroom or nut-based meat alternatives. An idea for a deluxe vegetarian platter could include avocado, Emmenthal cheese and fresh pepper; sliced egg, mayo and tomato; Brie, cranberry and walnuts; hummus, house salad, cheddar, tomato chutney and spinach.
