Cool Homemade Birthday Cakes For Kids

A kid's birthday party should be fun and exciting. Kids love to celebrate the fact that they are growing up. Most birthday parties end with the entire gathering singing the happy birthday song as a cake with candles is brought out to the table for guests. Make this very special occasion even more special with an eye-catching homemade birthday cake. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Say Boo

Delight young guests with a scary cake even if Halloween is more than five months away. Make a standard round white cake. Ice the entire cake with milk chocolate icing. Use thin white icing to make a spiderweb on top of the cake. Top with spiders made from dark chocolate icing. Another fun Halloween-themed cake is a jack-o'-lantern cake. Ice a vanilla cake with dark chocolate icing. Draw a pumpkin on top. Give the pumpkin a face with more chocolate icing. Make the mouth of the pumpkin wide enough to hold candles. Serve the cake with the candles placed only in the "mouth" of the pumpkin rather than scattered across the rest of the cake.

Make It Pretty

Delight a young girl with a pretty cake made just for her. Cook three cakes, each one about a third larger than the next one. Cover each layer of the cake with a progressively darker shade of pink fondant. Wrap the bottom of each cake layer with bright purple ribbon. Scatter pink and purple flowers across the top of the cake and on the cake plate. Turn a cake into a ladybug. Bake a standard round cake. Top the round layer with a layer shaped like a football cut in half. This will make a shape for the ladybug. Cover the entire cake in pale red fondant. Add circles of green fondant to represent the ladybug's spots. Cut out an oval of green fondant. Place at one end of the cake to give the ladybug a face. Make eyes and a mouth for the ladybug out of additional pink fondant.

Use Numbers

If this is the child's 13th birthday, make a cake from the numbers one and three placed side by side. Many kitchen supply stores have special cake molds. Look for one that has the right numbers. Bake two cakes. Top each separate cake with fondant dyed your child's favorite color. Serve the cakes on a white plate so that people can see the cakes easily.
