Doityourself Halloween Centerpieces

A bright orange pumpkin can be turned into a festive vase

If you are having a holiday party or simply want to decorate the family dining table to celebrate Halloween, a festive centerpiece will certainly get you in the mood for trick-or-treating. All you need are some craft supplies and a little bit of creativity to create these fun and spooky Halloween table decorations. Does this Spark an idea?

Pumpkin Bouquet

Nothing looks better at the center of a table than a bouquet of freshly cut flowers. However, if you are decorating for a special holiday, you may want something a little more festive to grace your table. What says Halloween more than a fat orange pumpkin? One idea is to use a hollowed out pumpkin as a flower vase. The tricky part is finding a pumpkin that looks good from all angles, so you want to inspect it thoroughly for flat spots and marks. To get more than one night's use out of the pumpkin vase put the flowers in a vase that fits down inside the pumpkin instead of filling it with water. Also, try using quality silk flowers instead of real flowers in order to get the most use from your vase.

Glittering Bones

If you want something a bit spookier to place on the table, how about some glittering bones? Around Halloween, you can usually find inexpensive props at party stores. Besides using bones and skulls, you may prefer to use foam pumpkins, silk leaves or other fall props. Any kind of glitter will work for the job, but a finer variety will get into cracks and crevices more easily. Craft stores sell a variety of glues and spray adhesives that can be used for the glitter. All you have to do is coat the objects with the glue and cover them with glitter. Display the objects on a variety of surfaces. Hall tables, front porch arrangements and mantles are some suggestions. If you wish to use the glittery objects as a centerpiece, arrange them on a decorative cake stand or platter. Candlelight can really make them come alive, as the glitter catches the light, which makes them shimmer.

Specimen Jars

Call to mind Dr. Frankenstein's lab with a bowl full of creepy specimens. Kids will love to help with this project, as their imaginations can run wild with all the possibilities. You can make a specimen jar out of any kind of clear glass container. The vintage-looking apothecary jars that are available at most home and craft stores work great for this. You can fill the jar with various vegetables and some murky water doctored up with a splash of milk and a little bit of red or green food coloring. Let kids determine which vegetables will make the best body parts. Some ideas to get you started are to use a head of cauliflower as a brain or some grapes as eyeballs. Guests will not be able to help themselves from marveling at this creepy centerpiece!
