Easy Decorating Ideas For Cakes

Decorating cakes is not rocket science. There are easy shortcuts to cake decorating techniques that allow beginners to make some amazing creations. Amaze your friends and families by serving impressive cakes. They'll never believe you when you tell them how easy it was. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Decorating Cakes With Candy


You can use candy to decorate cakes. Frost with a layer of buttercream frosting in any color you wish and then arrange candy-coated chocolate pieces into patterns on the surface of the frosting. If the frosting dries, you can dip the candy in more frosting or icing to make it stick. Picture a rim of green candies at the edge of a round cake, with candy cloverleaf for St. Patrick's Day or a red candy heart on a white Valentine's Day cake. For the Fourth of July, you can use red and blue candy-coated chocolate pieces to recreate the American flag on a white-frosted sheet cake.


Cake Stencils


Spray cans of food coloring can be used to airbrush a cake, or with stencils to create artsy-looking images and flawless lettering. Since stencils work best on a smooth surface, begin with a rolled fondant topping. Roll out a bit of leftover fondant to practice on and once you get the feel for it, you can do the cake. It's easy to make an amazing cake, just by spraying. Some cake stencils have fancy letter fonts, pictures, floral patterns and even lace. Spray colors come in primary colors, decorator colors and even metallic shades.


Stained Glass for Cake


You can use fruit roll-ups to make a cake look like stained glass. For a stained-glass sheet cake, trace the bottom of the cake pan onto waxed paper. Print or draw your stained glass image onto the waxed paper. Make a second copy--a duplicate of the first. In both paper versions, write the color you intend for each section. An alternative to writing the color would be to actually color it in with a marker or crayon.


Cut along the lines of one of the waxed paper mock-ups, separating each color into its own stack.


Unroll the fruit roll-ups and cut each piece into the correct shape, using your puzzle pieces as a guide. Lay the cut pieces of fruit roll-up on the waxed paper until they're all cut out.


Once your stained glass image is assembled on the waxed paper, transfer each piece, one by one, to the cake, starting in the center and working your way outward.


Use a squeeze tube of black, gray or silver frosting for the "lead" in the glass
