Diy Tiki Hut

Build a backyard Tiki hut in a weekend.

Tiki huts are attractive, exotic outdoor structures for poolside, outdoor kitchen and patio bar enclosures. They are easy to construct with materials that aren't usually available at the local home improvement center but are obtainable through Internet and mail order sources. With basic construction and carpentry skills, you can build a tiki hut in a couple of days to enjoy all summer long. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Put four of the bamboo poles into each utility bucket and fill with sand or gravel.

2. Cut eight 5-feet lengths of rope and tie each bamboo bundle in the utility buckets together at 3 feet and 6 feet high. Weave the rope in between the poles and tie together tightly.

3. Set the utility buckets in a 4-by-6-feet rectangle.

4. Cut three bamboo poles in half so that you have six 4-feet pieces.

5. Drill a hole through the ends of each 4-foot bamboo piece, and form two triangles with them. Insert 5-foot lengths of rope into the holes and tie the pieces together tightly.

6. Lay two 8-feet bamboo poles on the ground 4 feet apart. Stand a triangle two feet from each end, putting the poles inside the bottom corners of the triangles. Tie the triangles to each pole with rope.

7. Insert another 8-feet pole in the top corners of the triangles and tie them together tightly with rope to complete the roof frame for the hut.

8. Drill holes in the four corners of all the plywood sheets. Insert lengths of rope through the holes of the 3-by-6-feet pieces and tie them tightly to the pole bunches in the utility buckets just above the tops of the buckets. Cut the palm leaf thatch roll and staple it to one side of the 3-by-6-feet plywood.

9. Insert rope through the holes of the 4-by-6-feet pieces of plywood and tie them tightly to the roof frame. Cut the palm leaf thatch roll to fit the two roof sections and staple it in place.

10. Drill holes through the top ends of the 8-feet supporting poles in the utility buckets and insert lengths of rope through them. Place the roof frame atop the four bamboo pole bunches in utility buckets and tightly tie it to all four corner supports.
