Edible Crafts For Kids

Kids love food, and kids love crafts, so combining them into edible kid crafts is a no-brainer. Kids will delve into making an incredible edible kid craft with enthusiasm, and they will be delighted to eat it--even if it has vegetables they would normally sneer at.

Pizza Faces

Just about everyone likes pizza, and kids are on the top of the list for loving a good cheesy pizza with their favorite toppings. Make pizza even more fun by letting kids make their own pizza faces. Set out bowls of chopped pizza toppings. Pepperoni slices can be used as eyes, mushroom slices as ears, shredded cheese or broccoli can be used as hair, olives as a mouth, and other toppings can be used for noses or extra facial features. Use biscuit dough as a base by rolling and stretching it out into large circles. The base for the face can be spaghetti sauce or no sauce at all; let the kids decide. Cook in the oven at the temperature recommended on the biscuit dough until the cheese is melted and the dough is golden brown.

Frozen Chocolate Banana Faces

Kids can make frozen banana faces as an edible craft. Use craft sticks, bananas sliced in halves, melted chocolate and mini-M&M's as the tools for this project. Dip the bananas in melted chocolate to coat the top half, and while the chocolate is drying, add faces with the mini-M&M's. Wrap them in wax paper, and place them in the freezer for a half hour to an hour. Eat this kid craft for desert or as a snack on a hot summer day.

Garden of Worms

Kids will be delighted to eat and make a garden of worms, which is a very simple edible kids craft. To do this craft you, will need clear plastic cups, chocolate pudding (homemade or store-bought), gummy worms, chocolate sprinkles and cocoa powder. Place the pudding in the bottom of the clear plastic cups, then mix the gummy worms in. Shake a teaspoon full of cocoa powder over the top of the mixture along with a teaspoon of chocolate sprinkles. Stir gently so some worms pop their heads out of the soil. This kids' craft is also good for birthday parties.

Frozen Aquarium Pops

For this edible craft, you will need one empty ice cube tray, blue gelatin (made lighter by adding more water), gummy fish and toothpicks. Have kids help make the gelatin, allowing them to pour it into the ice cube trays before it sets. Let the kids add one to three gummy fish to each ice cube space, depending on how deep they are. A standard ice cube slot will hold two gummy fish. Freeze for approximately eight minutes, then add toothpicks to the centers while the gelatin is hardening, yet still soft enough to poke into. Freeze for another 30 minutes or until the aquarium pops are set. Serve as pops or as special ice cubes in juice or water.

Edible Finger Paint

Edible finger paint is one of the easiest edible crafts for kids to make. Use food coloring in vanilla pudding to create different colors of edible paint. Place wax paper in a long sheet in front of each kid doing the craft. Let them use their fingers to paint a picture with the pudding. After they have made finger-painted masterpieces, they can eat it right off of the wax paper by using their fingers, licking it off or using a spoon to slide it off.
