Birthday Cake Games For Kids

Include party games that are all about the birthday cake.

Second only to the birthday child, the cake ranks as one of the stars of the party. Celebrate this sweet birthday tradition in more ways than one. Before you serve the cake, build the anticipation with games that highlight this favorite birthday treat. Kids will enjoy playing the birthday cake games almost as much as they enjoy eating the cake itself.

Birthday Cake Scavenger Hunt

Send the kids on a scavenger hunt for the items needed to make a birthday cake. Hide the supplies around the yard or throughout the house. Items to hide include cake mix, a mixing bowl, baking pans, spatulas, frosting, oven mitts and a kitchen apron. Print a checklist of the items they must find. When the kids return all of the supplies to the kitchen, have them help mix the ingredients and bake the cake.

Birthday Cake Word Scramble

Play this game when you are ready to present the birthday cake. Have the children sit in a circle on the floor. Hand them each a pencil and a piece of paper on which you have scrambled words and phrases, such as birthday cake, candles, happy birthday and birthday wish. Instruct them to unscramble the words to earn a seat at the birthday table. When each completes his unscramble challenge, he may get up and go take a seat at the table. When all of the kids arrive at the table, it is time to sing the birthday song and eat the cake.

Birthday Cake Relay

Divide the party guests into two teams and have each team form a single line of players. On a table several feet away from the players, set out one birthday cake and a set of candles that is equal to the number of players on each team. At the word "go," the first player in line must run to the table, retrieve a candle, return to her team and stand in the back of the line. When the first player returns, the second player must run to get his candle and return, also to the back of the line. Once all of the players have retrieved their candles and returned to the line, the entire team must race to the table and place the candles in a cake. When all of the candles are in the cake, an adult will light them and the team will blow them out together. The first team to collect and place their candles in the cake and then blow them out wins the game.

Birthday Cake Decorating Contest

Instead of one large birthday cake, bake or purchase one single-serving size birthday cake for each guest. Set one unfrosted cake in front of each guest's seat at a table. Provide frosting, sprinkles, gel icing, crushed cookies and an assortment of small candies. Instruct the kids to use these items to decorate their cakes. Award prizes for the best decorated cakes. Category suggestions include most creative, most colorful, prettiest, silliest or strangest cake.
