Use red balloons to build a giant Elmo for your child's birthday party.
Elmo is a popular character from the TV show "Sesame Street." The short muppet with the fuzzy red hair has been entertaining children on the show since his debut on the show in 1982. Since then, Elmo has been featured in numerous kids' movies and has been used as the focus of countless kids' toys and products. Though an old classic, Elmo's popularity among children is still omnipresent. Indulge your child's Elmo love by using the character as the basis for decorating ideas for his birthday. Does this Spark an idea?
Elmo Piñata
Elmo Piñatas are ideal for a children's party because they not only provide a decorative focal point, but also serve as a fun activity for children to play later. Pack the Elmo piñata with candies or small door prizes and suspend the piñata by rafters in a room or by a tree outside. If possible, purchase Elmo-themed filler for the piñata. Have the children take turns hitting the piñata with a blunt object until the piñata breaks or falls down. The children can then pick from the prizes in the middle, with the child who successfully brought the piñata down having the first pick.
Inflatable Elmo
Purchase a large inflatable Elmo and place it in the main party area. If it is too large, place it somewhere where the party might go, such as the backyard, or in the front of the house to welcome attendees. To make your own balloon Elmo, purchase a pack of red balloons and rent a machine that can pump helium into the balloons. Create the basic shape of Elmo -- arms, head and legs -- and have your child help you create Elmo's face using construction paper and glue. Hook the balloons together by taping them together with scotch tape, or by tying them together with string using the bottom tied area. Tie Elmo to a sturdy object using the lower leg area.
Large Door Elmo
If you're creative and want a full-scale craft project, make an Elmo door out of your front door. Tape several sheets of red construction paper to the door with scotch tape. Have the birthday girl help you with this craft by cutting out large-scale Elmo eyes, nose and mouth. This will welcome visitors to the party and get them excited for the fun ahead, as well as help them find the right house if they're circling the block.
Elmo Party Items
Several companies and businesses offer Elmo-based items for a birthday party, such as Elmo-themed small and large plates, cups, silverware, napkins and birthday cake candles. For the surrounding areas, you can border Elmo-themed streamers around the room or cut off several lengths of streamer material and dangle in the middle of the party room's doorway. Also look for Elmo door prizes, invitations, small gift bags, birthday cake and small candies.
Elmo's World
Transform the party room into Elmo's world, a room that is mainly colored with crayon. wrap construction paper around the window, floor and door trim. Next, have your child color on these pieces of construction paper so that there is a crayon-colored border on the construction paper around the floor, window and door trim; be careful not to get it on the trim or walls. Attach several sheets of construction paper to one wall so that it makes a small column. On this paper, have your child draw a small table with a fish bowl on top. In this fish bowl, draw Dorothy, Elmo's fish friend.
