Edible Science Projects For Volcanoes

Replicate a volcano with edible materials.

Whether a science fair project, a class experiment or a dinosaur lover's birthday party, an edible volcano is just what you need to make a lasting impression. At the end of the presentation, share the edible confection with your classmates or guests. Edible volcanoes can be made to scale or can be more of a creative art process. Even a treat based upon the characteristics of a volcano can add an entertaining feature to any kid's dessert.

Chocolate Cake Volcano

Bake chocolate cakes in two bunt pans and layer them with chocolate icing when cool. Refrigerate the cakes for approximately two hours and use a sharp knife to carve them into a volcano shape. Save the scraps for an after dinner snack. Prepare an icing glaze combining confectioner's sugar and water to a runny consistency and drizzle over the cake volcano opening and down the sides of the volcano, ensuring that the top is covered enough to hide the chocolate icing layer. For an older or adult group of volcano lovers, bake molten lava cakes resembling the characteristics of a volcano in glass ramekins. (See Resources for a recipe.)

Rice Krispie Volcano

Make a Rice Krispies mixture and mold it into a volcano shape with a hole in the middle. If necessary, form the V-shaped treat around a greased piece of clean PVC pipe or use a plastic-wrapped paper towel tube. Spread chocolate icing or melted chocolate over the Rice Krispies and refrigerate until firm. Drizzle strawberry syrup topping as lava or decorate the volcano with red icing. Decorate the volcano with plastic palm trees and small, plastic dinosaurs.

Sugar Cookie Volcano

Spread pre-made sugar cookie dough around the outside of an inverted metal bowl set on a cookie sheet. Bake the cookie on a lower temperature than the package directions and remove the volcano when it begins to appear brown. The volcano can be iced with white icing when it has cooled completely to appear as a snow-covered mountain. Use red ice cream topping as lava. For best results, leave the cookie over the bowl to avoid it cracking and breaking. Depending on the bowl shape, it may be more rounded than V-shaped.

Edible Play-Doh Volcano

Create edible Play-Doh by combining an 18-ounce jar of creamy peanut butter, 6 tablespoons of honey and 3/4 cup of non-fat dry milk in a bowl. Knead the mixture until smooth and use either more or less dry milk for a Play-Doh consistency. More than one batch may be necessary, depending on the size of the volcano. Form the dough ball into a V-shaped volcano and add strawberry jam as lava dripping from the volcano's peak.
