Put your preschoolers to work making their name tags.
Make name tags with your preschoolers to help them--and you--learn each other's names and to foster a sense of belonging in class. Affix name tags to the child's clothing or to her desk or cubby to designate her special work areas. Use common classroom materials to help each child fashion a name tag that reflects her likes and dislikes, reinforcing her individuality within the group of learners.
Goofy Picture
Take a silly face picture of the child and let her decorate it as a name tag.
Stand the child in front of your welcome bulletin board and instruct him to make a silly face. Snap his picture with an instant camera or a digital camera and print the picture. Provide a station with glue stick, colored tagboard, markers, stickers and foam shapes. Affix the picture to the tagboard, print his name on it and let the preschooler decorate his picture name tag.
Handprint Name Tag
Make the child's handprint into a special name tag.
Get out the washable tempera or, better yet, your big round stamp pad, and make a handprint name tag. Press the preschooler's hand in paint or onto the stamp pad and place the handprint on tagboard or sturdy construction paper in the color of her choice. Print her name beneath it and let her decorate it with sequins, jewels or stickers. Help her cut it out with safety scissors in the shape of her own hand.
Template Tags
Let each child choose his name tag shape to reflect his interests, such as ice cream.
Provide a selection of simple templates on colored paper such as ice cream cones, cowboy boots, butterflies and race cars. After the child selects his shape, print his name on it with marker and let him decorate it with crayons and stickers to show his favorite colors and favorite things. Help him cut out the template and put it on his shirt or desk.
