Germany is the site of many European and World War battles. In recognition of this rich military history, companies offer tours that visit sites from battles fought during the Napoleonic wars as well as in World War I and World War II. Tours range in length and scope, from tours that visit one set of battles, to those visiting entire campaigns, and from single-day tours to two-weeklong tours.
The War Research Society
The War Research Society has been offering guided battlefield tours of primarilty World War II battles for more than 20 years. Founded by retired police officers and veterans, the group operates historical tours of areas of interest in France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Egypt and other countries that were important during World War II. Tours are planned to include as many stops as possible and include hotel accommodations with in-room bathrooms, buffet breakfasts and three-course dinners. Tours range in length from three- and four-day tours to 13- and 15-day tours. Free entrance to all museums is included with the tour fee. The "Berlin Special" is one of the German tours offered by the War Research Society. Lasting seven days and six nights, this tour departs from the United Kingdom. Tour sights include Nijmegen and Arnhem, where the story of "A Bridge Too Far" by Lt. Col. (Rtd.) Tom van Soest is retold, a visit to the Belsen Concentration Camp and Berlin, for the Battle of Seelow Heights. Checkpoint Charlie and Hitler's Bunker are just a few of the interesting Berlin sites visited on the tour.
Arnhem Battlefield Tours
A small tour company operating out of Germany, Arnhem Battlefield Tours is operated by British nationals Nick, Will and Michael Kelso. Nick Kelso authored the book "Errors of Judgment" and has a comprehensive understanding of the battle of Arnhem and Operation Market Garden. The three men provide historical background and insight into the political significance of what occurred at each battlefield site visited. The "Battlefied of Arnhem Tour" is one day in length and includes a tour of the main sites of the Battle of Arnhem, including the landing and drop zones, the Arnhem road bridge and the Oosterbeek Perimeter. Lunch is provided.
The Cultural Experience
The Cultural Experience provides many tours, one of which is a tour of the Napoleonic battles fought in Germany. Their seven-day battlefield tour to Germany visits Napoleonic battles fought from 1806 to1813. It also includes stops at battle sites for the battles of Hochkirch and Rossbach that were fought by Frederick the Great. The tour stops at the battlefield of Jena and the villages of Cospeda, Closewitz, Vierzehnheiligen and Isserstedt where Napoleon began his war against the Prussians. The battle of Dresden, with a visit to the Dresden military museum, is included as well as the Saxon fortress and artillery museum at Koenigstein where Frederick the Great captured the entire Saxon army in 1756. The tour's final full day includes a visit to the site of the battle of Leipzig, which saw more than 100,000 casualties over three days of fighting. The tour includes all travel and accommodations while on the tour as well as six breakfasts, three lunches and five dinners.
