Best Cake Decorating Accessories

The right cake decorating accessories will help you to make one-of-a-kind creations.

As with all culinary arts, cake decorating has continued to grow from a simple frosting on the top of a cake to confectionery wonders that are the subject of television reality shows. You can make your own beautiful cakes at home if you have the proper tools. Decorating your own cakes can be fun, easy and more budget-friendly than paying for store-made cakes. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Pastry Bags and Tips

A staple in any cake decorator's tool kit is a range of pastry bags and decorative tips in assorted sizes and shapes. Mix up your icing in a bowl before transferring it to your pastry bag. You can use a spatula or spoon to fill your plastic pastry bag with your cake icing. Attach a decorative tip to the opening of your bag, and push your icing through the tip to make assorted shapes. These shapes include stars, waves and flowers. These pastry tips can be used to spell out messages on the top of cake or create scrolling effects. Durable, plastic pastry bags are easy to clean and reuse.

Acetate Strips

Acetate strips allow you to design your cake on a flat surface rather than on the cake itself. You can use these strips as surfaces on which to make intricate designs out of fondant or chocolate. Once the designs have dried and hardened, simply slide the designs off the acetate strips and attach them to the side of the cake with frosting. Some acetate strips even feature embossed designs that can be imprinted onto your cake. Cut your acetate strips to wrap around the circumference of your cake or to fit the cake's surface. You can create a scrolling design that will perfectly fit around the cake without worrying about any drips or imperfections ruining your cake design.

Other Accessories

To create the right surface for your cake decorating, you will need to use smoothing and texturing tools. Fondant and cream frostings can be smoothed using large spatulas. Drag your smoothing tool over the surface of your cake and shape your cake's surface, just as you would use a trowel when tiling a floor. Texturing tools feature designs that can be imprinted onto the cake's surface easily. You will also need sifters for decorating with powdered sugar or glazes.
