Obstacle Course Party

Create an obstacle course to provide entertainment for the backyard birthday party. Adapt the obstacle course according to how old guests are; even teenagers can enjoy the activity, depending on the difficulty level of the course you set up. Choose funny activities that individuals must do to complete the obstacle course. For example, they could dress in funny clothes, jump in and out of hula hoops, make a goal with a basketball or do something blindfolded. For an older crowd, include eating something like Jell-O without hands. Divide the group into teams or reward players for their individual times.

Water Games Gauntlet

The water games gauntlet works best in warm weather. It combines an obstacle course and a water fight. Divide the group into two teams. The first team runs through the course you set up. The course can include a slippery water slide, wading pools participants need to "Army crawl" through, and an obstacle they need to climb over or under. While the first team is completing the obstacle course, the second team uses water guns, water balloons and buckets of water to slow the progress of the other team. After the first team finishes the second team goes through the course and the first team tries to slow them down. After completing the gauntlet, let the children to have a massive water fight. Give a prize to children who pick up the most water balloon pieces.

Barbecue

Backyard barbecues are common. They keep food-related mess outside and allow guests to enjoy themselves. This idea works well for adults as well as teenagers. Provide plenty of seating, drinks and yard games such as croquet, badminton, bocce, cornhole and volleyball. An easy birthday party menu would be a barbecue potluck--asking friends to bring desserts or salads. For teenagers, providing pizza and cake will work as well. A cake shaped like a barbecue grill will entertain guests. Another cake idea is to choose the person's favorite item and bake a cake that looks like it. Decorate the backyard with helium balloons, festive tablecloths and simple birthday-related centerpieces. Combine the barbecue with a swimming party if it's a hot day.
